Switching VTs seems a big problem in 9.1. I raised it with the forum and no one responded. I suggest you boot into SUM (Single User Mode), mount your / rw and then make the change. Then boot into MUM.

True, with *BSD, they use rc.subr, not run levels. I honestly played with Linux run levels many years ago. I generally don't run Linux. I am a *BSD guy.

Booting into SUM is an option when the boot screen displays. I think it's option #4. When you choose it, you press enter and get presented with the default shell. At that point filesystems are read-only so:

mount -u /

cd /etc/X11

ls -al

cp xorg.conf.bak xorg.conf

exit # go to MUM

Yesternight I accidentally fumbled with the system on my laptop and ended up sending instructions to it so that the graphics configuration wizard started on the next reboot.
