Now I have a bead against this. Ever cared to google if other countries had a similar clause in their law? I challenge you to find a couple of countries without a similar clause.
The thing is, such clause are to protect the minority. This is actually not the only law that seem odd but really based on fairness. And no, they will not prevent him from choosing a Christian candidate, but he should not be too explicit about it.
An anology of this is specifying a candidate should be white because most of the business clients are white. Ah, now I hear you whining

Dude, there is no law that don't have problems, what's really important is that the benefits outway the detriments. And most people including Kenyans approves of ICC
Anyway, seen too many people in Kenya that volunteer information that's not appreciate. CVs with age, race, religion, height, single or married, sex, race and sexual orientation are a no no in most countries.
