That's why I had to add a static route on the laptop so the iPad could connect to the proxy server (running on the laptop) because Safari on the iPad could not contact the proxy. The only thing is that you can't do much beyond browse unless a particular application/software uses the proxy as well to connect to the internet. Essentially if you are using a proxy you don't have to be in the same network.
