The Orange ADSL package does not look too impressive to me yet.
256 Kb for 2,999.00 (USD 40.00) - Would have gone with up to 768 kbs on this one.
512 Kb for 3,999.00 (USD 50.00) - Would have gone with up to 1.44 Mbs on this one.
1Mb for USD 6,9999.00 (USD 90.00) - Would have gone with up to 3 Mbs on this one.
No info on uplink speeds in the advert yesterday. Either they are starting off this deal using expensive satellite connectivity or their internal (local loop - fiber network switching and routing) infrastructure is not up to speed yet, or they are not being generous enough to win market goodwill before anyone else does. Am very sure AccessKenya will hit them on this one at least between 6pm and 6am.
Unless you have a bad copper line or are in an area where they do not have enough bandwidth (network connectivity), Orange ADSL is certainly not the worst out there.
Their contention ratios are pretty high - as is evidenced by lines the keep on dropping - but not as bad as Safaricom. Certainly not as good as AccessKenya but good enough.
Will check out if they are already offering the 1 Mb package and see how it goes over the next week or two. Will keep y'all posted.

I think we will start moving away from wireless networks and onto copper, fiber. One problem with wireless will be base station capacity so max throughputs will be for domestic packages and experience similar to 3g, not exceeding 30-50KBps at peak times/ 100-120Kbps off peak while egde 10-20KBps at peak times/ 32-48KBps off peak . Wireless for those on frame relay DLCI type of ccts will not be an issue though max capacity is 8Mbit/s
Interesting times ahead, Orange had an advert today for its ADSL service and its coverage areas. Most ISPs am sure are already geared up and revving to go.
Who takes the convergence pioneer prize as internet is no longer a subject to talk about in the next 12 months? Voice, Data, Video? IPTV and setup top boxes?
DTSV, local channels should be considering using fiber to push their content. Example : For news coverage of events from parliament, uhuru park and such, get fiber pops with streaming encoders equipment with AV outputs.
What about services like hosted services, I hope improve there will be improvement ( if not, expect competition down the long road 12-36 months eg : VOIP hosted and billing, exchange, mail, document design & printing, data warehousing, remote services, photo developing all done online. )?
Now the real thing takes off and we should start pushing the envelope! :-)
