I've not been on this road for many years and so today was a deserved trip to lake magadi. Totally refreshing, low traffic and amazing views! Its about 100kms (one way) from Nairobi and well worth the trip. For those who have travelled the alps during summer can easily relate to the views, too cool. Olepolous Club is a must stop over, the views will simply blow you away, especially early morning. The hot springs at lake Magadi are definately worth wading through. Then there is the most impressing views of the mountains, hills and beyond at at corner just after Kiserian town, just before you start descending down the escarpment. There is plenty of cool wind and I think the place is called Corner Baridi. You must stop here and take in the views and the breeze, truely amazing.
Directions: Take the C58 or Magadi Road. It ends at the Magadi Company. To get to the hot springs, they are about 16 kms from the Magadi factory and people are very keen to point you in the right direction. Some portions of the road are on the dry lake. You do not need a 4X4 to get there. There are 2 sign posts, wet season road and dry season road. Take the correct one, else your car will get seriously stuck in a salty slick...
Cautions on the C58 Road/Magadi road : Its a narrow road compared to other roads. The section after Kiserian, down the escarpment and towards Oltepesi has potholes but nothing major, you can average about 60-80kph but dont push it too much if you have a saloon car with soft suspensions, you could easily damage the rims or suspensions. One extreme caution are the blind dips and bends around corners so take it easy on such.
Best of all, take in the views and enjoy the drive. :-)
