I'll be damned if LHC doesn't find the God's particle and the EU are still pushing funds. Its a 6 billion dollar experiment for God's sake.. And even if thy don't find it, they'll still resort to "but its hypothetical anyway". From what I understand, the data is kept highly confidential to prevent speculation before *a **thorough analysis* is done by those who **really** understand it. Strictly speaking, one experiment say the ATLAS hardly ever knows what the other, like the CMS is gathering until such a conference as the one coming up on Wednesday is convened. After that everyone else can have their party ... ;)
If you want some gossip though, the Fermilab released an official announcement about their search for the Higgs' earlier than CERN [ http://www.fnal.gov/pub/presspass/press_releases/2012/Higgs-Tevatron-2012070... ]. The results are here [ http://tevnphwg.fnal.gov/results/SM_Higgs_Winter_12/ ]. I won't blame you if you see plain old rivalry in the publications ......
@Bernard, justification(s) for the funds was done over twenty years ago to the U.K and E.U governments. When Tim Berners-Lee was building the Web in 1989 at CERN, the LHC was already in design and construction stages. If the boson is not found, the focus of their research will only change. There are more things besides the Higgs' being looked for by the facility.
