To be honest I never saw this one coming. After the SUN, IBM court that went bust a while back I thought Sun had given up on suitors. Well, the good news is Oracle and SUN seem to be operating in disparate industies in some places e.g. hardware, Java the language, OSes (i.e. Solaris). But the real measure of what this means for the tech industry is what will Oracle do with those areas in which the two giants meet, mainly databases (Oracle vs MySQL) and enterprise middleware (WebLogic and Oracle app server vs Glassfish), even OSes (Oracles unbreakable *nix vs Solaris). Will they scrap some products in favor of others or will they mesh them to come up with one killer product. I still think that the open source offerings by either will not go away, but will they get better, that is the question? These two have been courting intimately over the last few years. Most versatile Oracle DBs are hosted on Sun Solaris OS and Sun SPARC Hardware. Java is an integral part of the Oracle DB. In fact most procedures in Oracle are written in Java. The Oracle EnterPrise Manager is also java based. May be it is time they took their relationship to the next level and got married ; ________________________________ From: Simon Mbuthia <simon.mbuthia@gmail.com> To: arthursimiyu@yahoo.com; Skunkworks forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Sent: Monday, 20 April, 2009 16:51:14 Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Oracle acquires Sun Hey guys, About MySQL, I'm not really sure what's likely to happen, maybe they'll kind of mix MySQL technologies into Oracle DBMS [purely guesswork - same applies to OpenSolaris and Oracle Linux... maybe] As for Java, I believe it'll remain open-source together with NetBeans. They'll probably extend Java, increasing its capabilities. But the best thing is to wait and see. I don't think they'll do anything bad to these already popular tools and technologies.. :) Me. Just the thought that the future of MySQL, Java, Netbeans, OpenSolaris and so many more open source applications now lie in the hands of Oracle gives me shivers up my spine.
