very interesting debate here. Personally I think Safaricom is overrated. They have what is called first mover advantage and are where they are thanks to some poor company called Kencell that watched the mobile industry go to Safcom and did nothing. Personally as a consumer I want value for money, bang for my buck, get things done within my budget and I'm sure businesses also want to minimize costs. Telecommunication is a basic service for business so why should I pay more to support somebody else's company while mine suffers. IMHO The market will determine who wins but with about 80% of the market and 10 times the subscribers as their closest rival. I think all this will just be a blip in the radar for safcom- unless number portability has an impact on the club effect On 11 September 2010 19:52, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:
As we all talk of the Kenyan Safaricom shareholders, you are all aware that the government and Vodafone hold 75% of the stock. The shareholders have no say in how Safaricom runs and I have never understood their role in the whole situation. If they refuse to uphold a decision, it goes to balloting and no prizes for guessing the eventual outcome. I think someone in treasury was clever enough to divide Safaricom shares into millions and then price them cheaply to fool the stock market, satisfying the demand and raising billions at the same time. We now have to look for a way to make sure Safaricom makes billions to ensure each share earns something. Airtel operate on a model of making sure that the mobile network is as lean as possible (outsourcing everything else) and not investing in infrastructure but leasing it forever. this means that their earnings are comparatively higher on lesser charges. The same way Safaricom reduced Telkom Kenya to the so call "small operator", they are now under threat. As for the Government, i doubt they ever have noble intentions . _______________________________________________ Skunkworks mailing list Skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks ------------ Skunkworks Server donations spreadsheet http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AopdHkqSqKL-dHlQVTMxU1VBdU1BSWJxdy1f... ------------ Skunkworks Rules http://my.co.ke/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=94 ------------ Other services @ http://my.co.ke
