@Collins, It's not an "African" thing as you would like to suggest. I for one watch a lot of stuff on 720p and above - which occupies most of my hours in front of the telly - and that was my primary motivation in going for a big-screen HDTV. The difference is worth it if one can afford it.
As for FTA channel transmissions - the quality varies but we'll see if they'll upscale after everyone is forced to digital tv, such that it will be the STBs to downscale for those with non-HDTVs. Kiss TV for example uses HD cameras in their studios, but we all know we watch SD content. If you're on DSTV you'll see KTN has the best picture quality compared to all other local channels - I guess that is SD maxed out. Why restrict your TV specs to local content quality? That's regression!
Kiss Tv and other tv stations might be using HD cameras, but what is their compression ratio on the uplink ? Most of these stations (Local and international) use very high quality cameras, but they have to re-encode and compress before they uplink the content due to bandwidth constrains/cost etc. There is too much that is lost during these two processes, thus resulting to artifacts and macro-blocking whether you have HD or SD Tv.

Is it just me that see's a big disconnect between content providers and the technology available? why invest in a 1080p TV when most of the content on broadcast tv (now that we are talking about broadcast) is to say the least horrible. Even the digital is in most cases broadcast at 720.... Save for the few movies downloads (which i would totally preffer to watch in a 27 inch Retina Imac btw), of what use is a beautiful screen with stretched pictures?
ama its just an "african" thing?
