In 20 years, your tech skills will be useless unless you keep them up to date or you have a solid educational foundation ... and you'll still need to make money in 20 years I presume. A degree is a great buffer against being replaced by the next generation and being put out to pasture. Good point. Never been asked for certificates - not even degree/college.
It is good to know education background, however, on-job experience and on-job trainings have always had an upper-hand to certification.
I thought the IT world is viewed as either you can do it - or you cannot do it.
