Only problem I have encountered with MANY of these rechargeable lamps are the batteries. Most have very low-quality lead-acid batteries, with surprisingly short lifetimes. After just a few recharge cycles, the batteries can only hold enough charge for 15 mins.
Though more difficult to source, and slightly more expensive, try get lamps with lithium-ion batteries.

Anyone with knowledge of "real" brands that have a long life?

I'm thinking more along the lines of those that are charged using electricity, have seen some along Rive Road for KSh. 700 for LED lights.
