If I'm not wrong the whole "patent an idea" trend is relatively new in the history of man and innovation and has always made me a bit uncomfortable. Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong but basically I can sit somewhere come up with idea A, go patent it and then sit back and do nothing and yet if anyone else tries to come up with an actual implementation of said idea I can sue them? (Clearly this is not what ManyatteRent did but I hope you get my point). Or if I implement it using my own way and someone else tries to do it in another way I can sue them? Does that make sense? Imagine if someone did this with say, car engines for example would we have seen the amount of innovation we've seen since the first one came about? You can't come up with a turbo engine until you track down the owner of the patent on all engines and get his/her permission????? I lean more towards the "patent an implementation of an idea" school of thought because it seems to me it allows for more innovation... In every society, like skunkworks is, there are are always those whose views/ideas veer off the path considered as the normal one - aka misfit. I am surprised by the negativity you've injected on this discussion.
I guess you are telling the ManyattaRent to be Kenyan - accept & move on, right? Without any inling of sympathy is this is indeed right!

I wonder if the developer's reaction would have been the same if a 'small' mobile phone operator 'stole' the idea.
Or better yet, if Safaricom 'stole' the idea when m-pesa users were about 5,000 ?
Since the idea has been stolen, why not focus on improving your product ? do market research , add more features...

Safaricom's response on the same page is very telling on the weaknesses developers have in sharing their ideas. As long as you are sharing an idea, I can recreate it in a different way and come up with a different idea. Sharing a product is however different.

This is something that is not new and not unless as developers or ICT community look for a long term solution to this(queen bee) it shall continue to happen, just look at the history:
MPESA PRSP - SEMATIME - where all their sms were blocked by safaricom EQUITY FAULU SEVEVSEAS MANYATTA RENT
the list is endless.

Out of a possible population of 7 billion + humans, it is naive to think your idea is unique.
It is also naive to think Safaricom will only use MPesa to send money to your grandmother / family. Safaicom WILL take MPesa to its logical conclusion which is ubiquitous payments.
