"Does KRA really give refunds??"

Technically speaking: no
KRA is in the business of collecting money not disbursing it - hence all money that is collected goes straight to Treasury and they are the ones who "refunds" (although KRA is the one actually doing it on their behalf).

Historically there has however been a major refund backlog - in that Treasury/national budget only allocated money for a portion of the refund-claims to be covered (deliberately ruining the cashflow of compliant businesses) - however it's supposed to be cleared by now see: http://www.nation.co.ke/business/Sh19-2bn-tax-refunds-to-be-paid-this-month/-/996/2639608/-/agtnwv/-/index.html However I don't know if it actually is.

Refunds are paid out on a first-come first-served (FIFO) order after being validated - so when you filed your claim it ended up at the end of the queue..
So the answer to your question is: yes eventually if it's a valid claim and you are compliant in all other TAX areas.

When you did your return and it showed that you would be in a refund-position you should had been asked about your bank-account details - this is where the refund will eventually be disbursed to (so don't close that account).

iTax does have a section regarding refunds - I can't recall if you actually have to "request" for the refund to be initiated - but take a look, you are supposed to see how far in the "process" your refund are.

Now that you are in a refundable-position it should also be possible to request to have the refund NOT refunded but instead using it as an offset towards future payments, but you have to explicit request this. This might however be "faster" than awaiting for Treasury to allocate refund funds...
