One problem you may encounter with the parallel UPS setup is power management. By using a larger smart UPS and battery management, you can manage shutdown alerts to eg network devices, before the batteries completely drain. This option is too critical for servers running eg SCSI type HDDs. You may be putting HDDs at severe risk of crashing and data losses. The other benefit of power management is on incremental backup systems. Imagine if the system was unable to stop the backup process and powered off during the write cycle process. A distaster waiting to happen. Though initially expensive, larger battery banks with smart power managements is worth an investment, depeneding on your application. To me it the worry would not be just about adding more uptime to a UPS, it would be more about how to manage the intended shutdowns to save on data problems.
