i believe its being mainly used as a CASE tool for automatic code generation using things lie Poseidon and Rational Enterprise however, experience has been mixed -- for a large system a UML diagram can quickly become un-understandable -- and the automatic code generation isnt really solving problems in many cases. (Also availability of open source UML software is a problem) tread carefully.
