@Kibui,

1)SLA is 48hrs.Technically, its faster than this but there are other processes that will make it longer.Customers will send a message to an SMS shortcode and visit either a retail agent or an authorised third party agent. The operators risk/revenue assurance will also perform validation. This is important to avoid fraud ,debt validation, etc. There are some grey areas in certain issues E.g Postpay subs in bill arrears, roamers, Okoa jahazi, some fraud-locked subs, line status (active/suspend/idle/etc).

2)There's a chance you'll exist in both INs(both n/ws billing systems). At retail centres, the customers will be given the other network's SIM card. There will be a notification on your old SIM card informing whether the process is successful or not. So dont throw your old SIM yet.

3) The rules encourage you to consume your balance otherwise it forfeited. The old n/w is not obligated to refunds.

4) Porting will be denied in this case.

5)CCK will take this opportunity to do some registrations. Also, the recipients n/w will take this advantage. When it becomes legal, CCK will enforce registration at the porting stage.

6) The first time you will be allowed to port out.but within 14 days the customers is given an opportunity to go back to old n/w.After this, you will have to remain in the other n/w for 60 days before another port, either back or to another n/w.

7) If you ar epostpay, you have to honour the contract otherwise accept penalties.Mpesa/Zap/Orange Money/Yu Cash are also contracts which the old n/w will have to pay before allowing the customer to port.

8) New n/w will issue a new SIM card. In MNP, only the MSISDN is moving not the SIM's IMSI, ICCID,etc Otherwise, you wont be able to perform location update.

9) Not possible. Mobile Number Portability.......key word is mobile .

2 cents..
Number porting only becomes economically relevant when you are being called on a number that is permanently known to the rest of the world and more so IF you incur charges when being called e.g. Toll Free or Toll shared numbers for contact centres.

I don't see this new service having such a great impact on things as they are today ...  This is because

  1. Almost everyone I know originally had a Safaricom Number
  2. When the war began the same people maintained their Safaricom Number and bought another line (ALTERNATIVE)  to make cheaper calls / sms. The other line in order of preference Airtel, Yu then Orange
  3. Most of the people known to these people by now know the  ALTERNATIVE number for the sake of making On-Net calls (Cheapest)
Now come number portability  do you think majority will port any of their lines to any other network ...  for the sake of making cheap er calls from THAT line  ..

Personally,  I will keep the original SIM/prefix for the original network.  There are many un-answered questions in the porting service that need to be considered.

  1. How long does the porting process take ?  a week or 2, ?
  2. More importantly will one be able to communicate with the line as the process is taking place
  3. What happens to one's airtime on the existing network when porting ? Does it disappear or will it be converted to shilling for shilling airtime on the porting network ?
  4. On the same thought ... Will post paid customers with a debt on the existing network move with their debt to the new network (I see many defaulters looking into this option)
  5. Since CCK has not fully implemented the SIM registration database will one be required to register on the porting network
  6. How long should a subscriber stay on the existing network before the number is eligible for porting. These becomes relevant to prodigal sons who port to a network that purportedly looked greener only to find that things are not all that then they would want to port back home...
  7. What happens to numbers that have contractual obligations with the provider ?
  8. Will the porting be virtual or will one need to get a new SIM card from the porting network with an assigned UPC
  9. Can one port a fixed line number / vice versa
