@Greg, my comments are based on an outlook that we can and should do better.

Either way, in regards to working smart or working hard, I've never had any issues with such. I believe bottomline is this: dependency and how should we get rid of it in the long term. To place a classic situation for discussion, say that commercially Adobe managed to ccommercially and completely embargo kenya on use of its software. What are our options then? You would probably then understand why China has pushed ahead so much. While it has become now what it is, they recently developed their own version of a jet fighter which many are tempted to say that it's a copy again, with some stories of a downed nato craft during the balkans war that might have been taken away for R & D.

We are TOTALLY EMBARGOED on things like online apps like those of iPhones, Blackberry etc. Does anyone have a local iTunes account? What about PayPal and such, are we able to receive payments?

If we are all to become an economic power house, see imporevment of kenyans needs, then we definately and passionately need to look ahead. I cannot believe that being an agricultural country, we still import tractors and those leasing/rent costs are passed over to the the consumer.

Look around you and list what is kenyan made and is a success. :-)

Some thots, IMHO.

@Aki,
Do you really have to generalize every bad attribute with being Kenyan! I want to convince myself am not included in the pack!

I disagree, because I believe anyone can do better their own circumstances. Picture this; the average population in the US (where MS and Adobe may have been created) constitutes billions of people, out of which thousands are the coders, developers, other tech geeks. Proportionately, a Kenya scenario would give the same ratio

Away from numbers, its not about an idea bieng original or not, its the opportunity that someone see in it and decides to try make out money...even if its by copying a replica of a business n doing it differently...just to meet customer demands that haven't yet been met. As Humphrey says, its WORKING SMART, not WORKING HARD. If some people are lazy in your own opinion, not everyone is!!
