I haven't used Windows Phone 8 - running 7.8 on a Lumia.
Generally, the experience has been satisfying. I suppose the issues I've faced are "first generation problems".

My worry, from experience, is that Microsoft takes too long to fix bugs and release features, to the point where Nokia has to actively develop Lumia exclusives to make the platform competitive with iOS and Android.

My single biggest issue with it is the lack of proper USSD support. If you want to do mobile banking, you have to take the SIM card out and use another phone (this is something which worked on any self-respecting mobile phone). I think the problem was such a turn off in South Africa, that this app (emDial)  had to be developed.
Thankfully, USSD is now now fixed in WP8.

Frankly, I think Microsoft should increase the frequency of their release cycles. I think Apple really excels in this - every major update is laden with tons of features (from the keynotes I've seen in the past).

So, yeah, the platform is great. The release and upgrade cycle is its undoing.
