Interesting. There's an operator in the UK, I forget the name who is offering homeowners free wifi in exchange for putting an access point in their homes in order to build a public network. Its hugely successful. There's also the case for wifi offload for Telco's. Personally I hate wifi cause of interference and instability. Imagine a cop stops you and you have free access to some legal document that explains exactly what you need to do and if it warrants it there's a bunch of lawyers accessible for a quick chat. Imagine cameras riding free on that network and all of us can access them (the ones mounted on public spaces).
WIFI is dirt cheap. even cheaper if you design your own hardware and controller, its merchant silicon, that means I can buy it, design it, build it, again easy to do by someone with time and the necessary motivation.
Even cheaper if its communally run and owned.
Either way its possible and yes, I tend to get excited by this sort of thing, and will probably see such a project through soon.
