I think the best user experience for news is what Reddit provides, or better yet, these guys http://abacus.co.ke/newsfeed/page/2/ 

The biggest issue with news sites is finding relevant news in them, you are assaulted with an array of graphics, adverts and news sections which all serve to hide what may be of interest to you. So, maybe, you can start from there? But that's just my opinion.
