we are focusing on moving from SFC to BA, how about BA to SFC: will I (or any other kenyan) be able to enjoy M-PESA services with Kencel (hic) number?
2 cents..
Number porting only becomes economically relevant when you are being called on a number that is permanently known to the rest of the world and more so IF you incur charges when being called e.g. Toll Free or Toll shared numbers for contact centres.
I don't see this new service having such a great impact on things as they are today ... This is becauseNow come number portability do you think majority will port any of their lines to any other network ... for the sake of making cheap er calls from THAT line ..
- Almost everyone I know originally had a Safaricom Number
- When the war began the same people maintained their Safaricom Number and bought another line (ALTERNATIVE) to make cheaper calls / sms. The other line in order of preference Airtel, Yu then Orange
- Most of the people known to these people by now know the ALTERNATIVE number for the sake of making On-Net calls (Cheapest)
Personally, I will keep the original SIM/prefix for the original network. There are many un-answered questions in the porting service that need to be considered.
- How long does the porting process take ? a week or 2, ?
- More importantly will one be able to communicate with the line as the process is taking place
- What happens to one's airtime on the existing network when porting ? Does it disappear or will it be converted to shilling for shilling airtime on the porting network ?
- On the same thought ... Will post paid customers with a debt on the existing network move with their debt to the new network (I see many defaulters looking into this option)
- Since CCK has not fully implemented the SIM registration database will one be required to register on the porting network
- How long should a subscriber stay on the existing network before the number is eligible for porting. These becomes relevant to prodigal sons who port to a network that purportedly looked greener only to find that things are not all that then they would want to port back home...
- What happens to numbers that have contractual obligations with the provider ?
- Will the porting be virtual or will one need to get a new SIM card from the porting network with an assigned UPC
- Can one port a fixed line number / vice versa
