Looks like this is a late response but a solution when uninstalling and reinstalling VLC is to uncheck the box the asks you to keep your previous installation's settings under custom install option. If you leave it checked then it will pickup the entire previous mess you had and use it in the new installation. I guess you are already sorted anyway
