
Hello @Wash, The other problem is that I cannot switch into a virtual terminal. There is an issue with the Intel drivers provided with PC BSD, the feature (V.Ts) is not supported yet. So if I do a ctrl + F1, ctrl + F2, ........ ctrl + F6, X11 server hangs up and I cannot access the command line and I am forced to power down the laptop. Another thing that I am sure you are aware of is that *BSDs do not have run-levels like Linux so I cannot modify the initrd.conf scripts and say go to run-level 1, 2 or 3 on start-up in order to troubleshoot the problem further. I have seen some pointers here: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.os.pcbsd.testing/7461 The comment indicates that I can default to the VESA generic drivers for the time being in order to get usable but non-optimal graphics. I will try that out and see if I can trick the system to once again take my proper card drivers. Else I will keep rebooting the machine until it accepts to pick my drivers. Thank you for your advice. Boot into the shell and cd /etc/x11/ and see if you have xorg.conf.bak. Copy that to xorg.conf and reboot.

Yesternight I accidentally fumbled with the system on my laptop and ended up sending instructions to it so that the graphics configuration wizard started on the next reboot. Right now, I only see the screen that asks if the video driver and other monitor details identified (aspect ratio, resolution and number of pixel depth) identified are correct. They _are_ all correct but the system just goes blank when you ask it to save the fresh configurations.
I am stuck now and kind-of too smug to boot into the Windows Seven partition. In any case, none of the tools I need can be found there. Has anyone had a similar problem before and how did she / he get over it? Normally I would restart my machine and go through the whole procedure. This has not worked up to now for me.
