Upgrade the phone to IOS 5.1.1 and then do an untethered jailbreak with the latest version of redsnow. Some of the common recovery errors can be fixed with tinyumbrella, but before you go to tiny umbrella, edit your hosts file and make sure the url with the 3gs update site in it is commented out.<br>
