Safcom credit credit

Safcom charges a whole 5 bob when u 'request' for that 50 bob emergency credit. Well, at that point safcom is doing me a favour so i think they have the right (but a whole 10%?!). Anyway, my beef is, why do they have to control who I call? Its my damn money now! In any case, being an emergency, i should be able to call anyone! CCK guys, do i have an argument here?

Federal authorities aren't looking to prosecute them, but to pay them to secure the nation's networks. General Dynamics Information Technology put out an ad last month on behalf of the Homeland Security Department seeking someone who could "think like the bad guy." Applicants, it said, must understand hackers' tools and tactics and be able to analyze Internet traffic and identify vulnerabilities in the federal systems. In the Pentagon's budget request submitted last week, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the Pentagon will increase the number of cyberexperts it can train each year from 80 to 250 by 2011. With warnings that the U.S. is ill-prepared for a cyberattack, the White House conducted a 60-day study of how the government can better manage and use technology to protect everything from the electrical grid and stock markets to tax data, airline flight systems, and nuclear launch codes. President Barack Obama appointed a former Bush administration aide, Melissa Hathaway, to head the effort, and her report was delivered Friday, the White House said. While the country had detailed plans for floods, fires or errant planes drifting into protected airspace, there is no similar response etched out for a major computer attack. David Powner, director of technology issues for the Government Accountability Office, told Congress last month that the U.S. has no recovery plan for a digital disaster. "We're clearly not as prepared as we should be," he said. Administration officials says the U.S. has not kept pace with technological innovations needed to protect its computer networks against emerging threats from hackers, criminals or other nations looking for national security secrets. U.S. computer networks, including those at the Pentagon and other federal agencies, are under persistent attack, ranging from nuisance hacking to more nefarious assaults, possibly from other nations, such as China. Industry leaders told Congress during a recent hearing that law enforcement and other protections are too outdated to fend off threats from criminals, terrorists and unfriendly foreign nations. Just last week, a former government official revealed that spies had hacked into the U.S. electric grid and left behind computer programs that would let them disrupt service. The intrusions were discovered after electric companies gave the government permission to audit their systems, said the ex-official, who was not authorized to discuss the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity. Cyberthreats are also included as a key potential national security riskoutlined in a classified report put together by Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Pentagon officials say they spent more than $100 million in the last six months responding to and repairing damage from cyberattacks and other computer network problems. Nadia Short, vice president at General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems, said the job posting for ethical hackers fills a critical need for the government. The analysts keep constant watch on the government networks as part of a surveillance programs called Einstein that was initiated by the Bush administration under the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team. US-CERT is a partnership of the Homeland Security Department, other public agencies and private companies. The Einstein program is an automated process for collecting and sharing security information. Short said the $60 million, four-year contract with US-CERT uses the ethical hackers to analyze threats to the government's computer systems and develop ways to reduce vulnerabilities. Faced with such cyberchallenges, Obama ordered the 60-day review to examine how federal agencies manage and protect their massive amounts of data and what the government's role should be in guarding the vast networks that control the country's vital utilities and infrastructure. Over the past two months, Hathaway met with hundreds of industry leaders, Capitol Hill staff and other experts, seeking guidance on what the federal government's role should be in protecting information networks against an attack. She sought recommendations on how officials should define and report cyberincidents and attacks; how the government should structure its cyberoversight; and how the nation can increase security without stifling innovation. A task force of technology giants, including representatives from General Dynamics, IBM, Lockheed Martin and Hewlett-Packard Co. urged the administration to establish a White House-level official to lead cyberefforts and to develop ways to share information on problems more quickly with the private sector. The administration has struggled with the basics, such as who should control the nation's cyberspace programs. The deal with Oracle came about two weeks after I.B.M. ended its talks with Sun. The Sun board balked at that deal after I.B.M. lowered its offer to $9.40 a share from $10. Still, Monday’s deal represented a 42 percent premium over Sun’s closing price of $6.69 on Friday. Oracle and Sun said in a statement that net of Sun’s cash and debt, the deal was valued at $5.6 billion. Sun’s directors have unanimously approved the transaction. It is anticipated to close this summer, subject to Sun stockholder approval, certain regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions, the companies said in a statement. Oracle said it expected the purchase to add at least 15 cents a share to its adjusted earnings in the first year after the deal closes. The company also estimated that Sun would contribute more than $1.5 billion to Oracle’s adjusted profit in the first year and more than $2 billion in the second year. Sun shares rose as high as $9.20 in premarket trading after closing Friday at $6.69, while Oracle shares fell as low as $18.34 after closing Friday at $19.06. A Oracle-Sun deal disrupts the traditional relationships formed between some of the technology industry’s largest players. Oracle, for example, has long-standing partnerships with Sun’s rivals, including Hewlett-Packard and Dell. These sellers of server computers work to fine tune Oracle’s database and business software for their computers. I.B.M., which competes against Oracle in the software market, also comes under new threats with the deal. For years, I.B.M. has used it homemade servers as leverage for selling higher-profit database and business software. With Sun, Oracle opens up the same opportunity and gains access to thousands of existing Sun customers. In addition, Oracle has now obtained the MySQL database, which Sun acquired last year for $1 billion. The open-source software has proved popular with companies looking to expand their Internet operations. Last year, Oracle began a flirtation with the hardware market. It started reselling a server computer from H.P. that relied on its software for managing and analyzing large volumes of data.

SHARING A USB PRINTER FROM UBUNTU HARDY

Hi all, anyone managed to share a usb HP_LaserJet_1020 printer on ubuntu hardy (8.04) on a lan? i have tried reading as much doc's with no success. Actually, the printer works fine on one machine(Hardy), but when i share the printer to be accessed by other Hardy clients on the lan.....the printing from these clients tends to "freeze/hang" and does not print. I have tried using the different protocols (ipp, HP Direct, Samba) without success. Anyone who's got this working or with any tricks under the sleeves that might solve this nightmare? I'd appreciate.

Wesley money is not a problem where developement is concerned. From the threads i can see that there is a real need. Furthermore lots of cars are being imported with GIS systems that cease to function once they land and the public would appreciate such a solution. I suggest that we meet on the side during the next skunkworks forum to escalate the issue, i am willing to volunteer my expertise in project maanagement at no cost :). Gakuru you should also be there to highlight the element of public private partnerships which you are good at, this project can be real sooner than we imagine. Any Skunk to finance? Revealing Security Holes vrs "The Rogue Tracker" type of stories

I believe that the ICT bill makes it illegal for someone to reveal security holes in IT systems. However doesn't investigative journalism stories like the recent "The Rogue Tracker" reveal 'security holes'? So what makes that legal? If one was to discover a security hole in a system, then one can do their own investigative journalism then reveal everything about the security hole. I believe the tracking system is an IT system. And it seems a security hole was revealed. It's like saying half of the companies that claim to have installed a particular firewall might not really have the firewall installed. Revealing security holes might be a necessary evil. Just like how some people might have lived with the false security about their cars, some people might be living with false security about their personal info in IT systems. Just the other day someone posted that s/he had bought something which was wrapped by paper containing security authentication credentials from a bank. Another post showed the lack of experience of a local bank's website programmers that allowed anyone to get the password of one of the subjects in their database system. Now all the funky possible stuff is left to the hacker's imagination who might be sitting in the middle of Migingo, sorry, Mijinjo. o_O?

No issue really. If the stuff about Track IT are lies then Track IT should have an easy time taking Standard to court.
