Zain to Launch 3G Service in July

So finally, after all those years, Zain will be launching their 3G service next month. But it all seems all these plans are tied to CCK reducing licence fees for 3G specrtrum licences. I wonder what will happen if they do not, and thee are a lot of powerful players in the industry who ate counting on this. Never the less, I still think the fees should remain the same at USD 25 million. That's what Safaricom paid, and with inflation the money is even worth less. And Zain, or Celtel had the opportunity to acquire a 3G license then and develop their markets the same way others did. Nevertheless, I think we should watch and see if this will have any bearing on product reliability and prices offered by other players. And their is the small matter of acquisition by Bharti Airtel, I am not sure where this leaves Zain's 3G plans. The new owners, known for targeting the 'lower end' of the market may as well decide the lower end of the market does not need 3G after all. And they will have come full-circle. It used to be the upper end of the market with KenCell back in 2001.

Orange IEW3G+ (3G-)

Skunks, I tried out Orange's IEW3G+ a few months back but it was not very reliable. Now I have tried again and I am quite impressed by the 7 day unlimited offer. This gives me an unlimited connection for 4,400 a month. I mean the name is still wrong - EVDO can't keep up with Safaricom's real UMTS 3G - but I get a steady speed of 60kBps (480kpbs) when I have a good signal - much better than the speeds Safaricom were offering on their now withdrawn unlimited offer. Not near the up to 3.1 Mbps promised (I guess there is a cap) but very good compared to my alternative with Access@Home 128kbps for 4,640. Do you have a better speeds when not on an unlimited bundle? With a 3G router (http://www.dovado.com/) I am able to plug in the modem (ZTE AC2726) and share the connection. Only annoying thing is that I have to reactivate the bundle every week and it is only available on pre-paid but the website makes topping up less of an operation than using SMS. Strange that Orange is requesting credit card information on an unsecure page that only require Basic Authentication though. I stick to scratch cards to keep my credit card info safe. Let's hope it stays.

Hard Disk Recovery

Hellow skunks and skunkettes, Anyone know someone or a company that can perform data recovery from a failed hard disk? The disk does not get recognized or picked by the machine so chkdsk scan does not work nor could i use tools like recovery disk or HIREN tools to scan the disk. Have been reading about the TKL/Orange situation, there are many lessons to be learnt from the current saga. The problem is due diligence based on financial records may not be enough to justify partnerships. Books can be cooked, assets can be over-estimated/under-estimated as is the case with each parties case etc. Due diligence should also be based on performance, management and a proven track record to deliver. Which takes me to the next point : When local public companies take on board members, who performs the due diligence on such people? What criteria is used to say " ok, so and so is a top manager/ceo at so place and is therefore a candidate for the board position who will take the public entity to a new level "? Rgds. Our "Consumer Habits" holding the Economy at Ransom?

Loyalty however admirable it may be... is there such a thing as too much of it with regards to the Consumer? If there is one indisputable fact about "History"... it does have a nasty habit of repeating itself. That being said, call me a pessimist but its only a matter of time before the same sort of financial fiasco that hit "Wall Street" and caused an unprecedented ripple effect across the globe hits home. If anything, the Nyagah Stock Brokers collapse was a feeble warning shot. WHEN? That we cannot determine. HOW? Like with everything else that goes wrong as far as financial matters are at stake, greed, irresponsibility in other words, the wrong individuals in all the right places literally gambling with (Public/Private) funds and with a complete disregard for consequence. The collapse of American giants Enron, Leyman Bros etc was never even once thought of but the fact of the matter remains, it happened. WHY? Allow me to break that down into two parts: - 1. Non-Existent safeguards and/or stringent enough laws put in place by the goverment, this is the Kenyan Goverment we are talking about after all. 2. By consumers unsuspectingly putting ourselves in a position to exponentially catalyze an Economic crunch. Example: - Via "excessive" consumer loyalty to a brand and unyielding stubbornness as far as CHANGE with regards to our spending habits is concerned we have placed one Communications Service Provider (Safaricom Ltd) in a position to rake in tens of billions of shillings annualy and dominate 80% plus of a market share in which there are 3 other players. Don't get me wrong, from one standpoint it is indeed a commendable not to mention impressive achievement as far as corporate strategy and success is concerned. However,bear in mind it is a publicly listed company, hypothetically throw in a national/regional economic meltdown causing mass collapse in stock & local currency values and ask yourself, would Kenya really be able to come back from that? Throw in the same scenario but in this case the subscriber Market Share and hence profits are much more evenly distributed amongst all the 4 existing CSPs in the country. Im no "Economic/Financial Expert" but im going to go out on a limb here and state that this second scenario would have a softer blow on the economy. If for no other reason, i think consumers should realize how much power they collectively hold. They can make or break institutions via their spending habits. Some rhetoric for you to consider, "How do you plan on holding yourself accountable?"

A Google spokesman said Wednesday that the data should be handed over within a matter of days. Last week, the company found itself in conflict with a privacy regulator at the German city of Hamburg, who wanted access to the data. Google said that it wasn't sure that handing over the data would be legal. "The data protection authority in Hamburg has made a number of requests -- including to be given access to an original hard-drive containing the payload data, and to a Street View car. We want to cooperate with these requests -- indeed we have already given him access to a car -- but as granting access to payload data creates legal challenges in Germany which we need to review, we are continuing to discuss the appropriate legal and logistical process for making the data available," Google said in a statement last week. Those challenges have apparently now been addressed. The company plans to hand over data to German, French and Spanish authorities, according to the Financial Times, (FT) which first reported this latest development on Wednesday. Google will publish a review of its privacy practices sometime within the next month, and also plans to publish the findings of an external audit into its Wi-Fi snooping operations, the FT reports. When California Casualty recently replaced its Cisco MARS security box, the property and casualty insurance company not only swapped out the hardware appliance for a software-based virtual one, but also ended up phasing other tools it found to be no longer necessary. California Casualty ditched the Cisco Security Monitoring, Analysis and Response System (MARS), a security information event and monitoring (SIEM) appliance, mainly because Cisco wanted the company to scrap the device and start over again with a brand-new one. The insurance company, which still uses Cisco firewalls and intrusion-detection products, wanted to upgrade its existing box, as starting from scratch proved more expensive than was acceptable. "Our existing MARS installation was an older box that had reached end of life," says Skip Moon, assistant vice president, network development and engineering at San Mateo-based California Casualty, which has about 700 employees, two data centers and three call centers. "Cisco wouldn't do [a simple software] upgrade and wanted a whole new start-from-scratch license. FTC cracks down on spyware seller

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has reached a settlement with Florida spyware vendor CyberSpy Software, two years after suing the company for selling "100 percent undetectable" keylogging software. Under the terms of the settlement, announced Wednesday, CyberSpy can keep selling its RemoteSpy spyware but must take new steps to prevent it from being misused or advertised as a tool for spying on someone else's computer. To prevent its program from being used illegally, CyberSpy must make changes to it to prevent surreptitious installation, and "encrypt data transmitted over the Internet, police their affiliates to ensure they comply with the order, and remove legacy versions of the software from computers," the FTC said in a statement. The FTC sued CyberSpy in November 2008 in an effort to get it to change its business practices. CyberSpy used to advertise its product as a tool that let users "secretly and covertly monitor and record PC's without the need of physical access." Equity, Kenya’s largest bank by customer base, has already signalled its intention to initiate more deals like M-Kesho with other mobile operators to increase its reach. Equity Bank CEO James Mwangi said last week that M-Kesho had within a week of its launch signed up more than 20,000 customers signalling that there is pent-up demand for the services. But even as the banking industry rejoices in the value that technology is bringing to their business processes, insecurity is emerging as a key challenge. “My only hope is that players are securing their customers from any fraudulent activity. KICT Board Grants and sharing ideas.

For those who have read the KICTB brief and are going for it, excellent move. For those who are skilled and may not have some ideas to work with, I share these ideas as I cannot focus on them due to personal constraints . Though I've not seen the RFP application forms, if anyone has already done so, they could help others get the process going incase there are clarifications needed. ( Deadline for submitting complete application forms is July 19, 2010. ) Ladies, Gents. This thread is to share those ideas that you may not have time to start or complete but someone else on the list can take up and benefit from. Your ideas may also be a wish list that you want to see happen and could lead to better ideas. However time is short for those interested, we have to ensure that the KICTB grant opportunity is not lost. IDEAS SUMMARY LIST ( incase they are useful to you ) : 1) Archive and Digitization of the Kenya National Museums : Create an online archive and searchable system. Each item needs to be scanned into image format with a water mark. The archives will provide a low image resolution for thumbnails preview and caption information about each asset. The assets will restrict high resolution images to paid categories. The archive database will be fully searchable by tags in caption like description, date, category etc. The system developed should be user friendly so that anyone who is the archive administrator can upload, edit and save content. 2) Historical Kenya : The National Archives and Kenya's journey over time. We have one of the greatest discoveries right in our backyard. Then after there is not much public information easily available nor informative. Do we have cave paintings? Do we have BC/AD timelines and what transpired? What impact did Shaka Zulu have on Kenya? Why is it that some local traditional dancers dress are simlar to those of the Zulu traditional dancers? This would be an interesting timeline project. An online system similar to 1) above. 3) A portal Mapping of all National Parks with GPS : Everyone knows how difficult it is to navigate in such areas. An old idea but with edge/grps. A site portal with single webcam feed of each possible location and integration over mobile devices. Example : Each year thousands of wildbeasts cross the mara, yet no one can predict the excat time. This year the rivers are full, crocodiles in plenty but also plenty of grass. So will they cross in larger or smaller numbers? Having a webcam feed that DOES NOT capture the event live but only streams small frames. Afterall you want people to visit and see the event in realtime, not on a desktop. 4) Nepad portal : This was suggested a while back but did anyone ever get it going? Rgds, Me thots.

I have tried understanding this Ofcom is advising anyone who offers free Wi-Fi access to consider restricting the service or risk potential prosecution. The telecoms regulator last week detailed its three-strikes scheme for dealing with illegal downloaders<http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/broadband/358306/ofcom-details-three-strikes-sc…>, which was introduced as part of the Digital Economy Act. Contained in the 74-page document is a warning to free Wi-Fi providers that they will be held responsible for the actions of their users. "Some businesses provide access in their public areas, and some consumers may also run unprotected Wi-Fi networks to allow others in their community free access to the internet," Ofcom's draft proposal states<http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/condocs/copyright-infringement/condoc.pdf>. "We consider that a person or an undertaking receiving an internet access service for its own purposes is a subscriber, even if they also make access available to third parties." hey guys.. im getting a sybase error error 694(An attempt was made to read logical page '%ld', virtpage '%ld' from virtual device '%d' for object '%ld' in database '%d'. The page was not read successfully. You may have a device problem or an operating system problem.). The SYBASE write up talks about it being a hardware error but hardware error logs don't show up any problem with the hardware. So was wondering if i increase the rate of I/O polling count which controls the maximum number of processes that Adaptive Server can run before the scheduler checks for disk and/or network I/O completions. has anyone encountered the error and how did they sort it out... -- Best regards Esther Wambugu

In today's newspaper they have launched Mixit (http://www.mxitlifestyle.com/) is a Peer-to-Peer IM client that runs on mobile-to-mobile and desktop-to-mobile. While some see this as cannibalizing SMS revenues, it's a stroke of genius because they still stand to make cash from the data traffic as opposed to loosing it to a competitor all together. (Rule No. 4 in business: Cannibalize your revenue and business model before your competition does it for you) After declining to support Mixit as a product, MTN SA now looses more than 8M Rand (KES 80M) a day, and the sad part, the app runs on their platform on either gprs/edge. Design The iPad is indeed just “an iPhone on steroids.” Have you seen all of those Apple tablet renderings before the launch? Some of them were great and a giant iPhone or a giant iPod (if you prefer it this way) is just ugly. There are and there will be more beautiful tablets on the market. 2. Multitasking This is a tablet PC. It’s a computer and you cannot run simultaneous apps? What if I want to browse the web, tweet, check email, and listen to music in the same time? I won’t be able to do that. 3. Front-facing camera I’d like a tablet PC with a webcam for video-conferencing calls, but Apple has said “No!” once again to a front-facing camera. Also there isn’t a camera on the back, even though it would be awkward to take pictures holding up a 9-inch device 4. Adobe Flash support HTML5 is becoming more and more popular, and some browsers support it, but Adobe Flash Player remains the web standard if you want computer-like browsing experience. The Nokia N900 has it and the Mozilla-based Maemo browser is probably the best mobile browser in the world. Users WILL to read newspapers on the iPad and I’m sure they’ll also want to watch some YouTube videos, but… you know the story. There’s an app for that too 5. Pricing The Apple iPad is expensive and you cannot use regular connectors from your other devices. You will have to use some expensive Apple stuff. A physical keyboard is not included in the package, you’ll have to buy it yourself. Want a camera? Pay for it! Can you buy a conventional camera? No, you have to buy Apple’s camera connection kit. The iPad case is also not included in the package so this means that you will have to dig deep into your pockets. 6. Battery Although the iPad is expected to run 24 hours on a single charge, things will change if play games and use WiFi or 3G connections during the day. Do you really think that this device will run a whole day? It won’t and there is no removable battery. Nowadays many consumers are buying an extra battery in order to replace the one in the device when it runs out. Non-removable battery means that you can run out of battery when you need it the most. 7. Processor Steve Jobs said that Apple cannot make a less than $500 product that it’s not garbage. Well, Apple made a $500 product that is garbage. The iPad is powered by a 1GHz Apple A4 custom-built processor, and seriously guys, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon has the same core speed and it’s a chip for phones. You’re using a computer! 8. Operating system We were all expecting something innovative from Apple and a new OS would have been great. iPhone OS 3.2 is not a big improvement over iPhone OS 3.1.3 currently available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The iPad really is just a big iPhone and that won’t help you at all. 9. Micro SIM The iPad requires a micro SIM card in order to use the 3G network. You can’t use your conventional SIM 3G card and you’ll have to buy another one only from AT&T 10. Carrier Rumors said that Verizon is preparing its store managers for Wednesday (January 27th.) because it’s going to be a big day. We thought that the iPad will be subsidized by Verizon, but instead we’re stuck with AT&T’s crappy 3G network again. 11. TV-out You might purchase videos from the iTunes store and download them to your iPad. You could watch them on the large 9-inch screen, however, I’d like to watch it on a HDTV. Oh, there’s not HDMI port, not even a TV-out connector. 12. Name People began making fun of the iPad even before its release and that’s thanks to Apple. It happens each time Cupertino releases a new product, but it’s funnier and funnier. Even though iTablet wouldn’t have been better, it’s too late now as a UK company has launched a tablet PC with this name.

@ Kiania i think to water down the conversation to an affront on Apple is unfair to the well thought out arguments on this thread. The issue here at least as i percieve it is the economic model that allows employee exploitation. There are two levels to this. The Macro level being how global economics encourage employee exploitation and the Micro level of how Apple and many other manufacturers are individually responsible for this. Hec how we are all individually responsible. We cant be whistling dixie while people are suffering . Their is some collective responsibility involved. While you are right on the suicide, for me that is a sideshow. We are trying to fix the disease not the symptom. And the disease is the fact that capitalism demands that business return a profit cut costs at whatever cost within the confines of the law. That bloodthirsty lust for profit must be tempered if workmans dignity is to be maintained. There are certain costs at which profit will make you lose sleep at night A caveat also is that it is too simplistic to assume that the suicides are caused by the working conditions. It might have the straw that broke the camels back, but their is usually a multiplicity of issues underlying such a drastic action. The CEO of a company accused of making more than US$100 million selling harmful "scareware" antivirus products was already a fugitive from U.S. authorities, following his arrest in 2008 on criminal counterfeiting charges. Shaileshkumar "Sam" Jain is one of three men who were charged by the U.S. Department of Justice on Wednesday for allegedly operating a massive scareware distribution ring. Jain ran a Ukrainian company called Innovative Marketing, which prosecutors say sold an astounding 1 million copies of fake antivirus products such as WinFixer, Antivirus 2008 and VirusRemover 2008. The company would set up fake advertising agencies with names such as BurnAds and NetMediaGroup, and then buy online advertising, pretending that it was for legitimate buyers, prosecutors say. These ads would be programmed to deliver scary-looking pop-up windows straight to users' desktops. The windows would typically look like Windows error messages or security alerts. To dismiss them, the victim would have to pull out a credit card and pay between $30 and $70 to buy Innovative Marketing's dubious products, prosecutors say. Before the scareware came the fake Symantec software. Prosecutors allege that in 2003 and 2004, Jain operated a handful of Web sites -- Discountbob.com, shopenter.com, winantivirus.com and others -- that all sold fake Symantec products. Jain allegedly drummed up new business by spamming victims or using pop-up ads to flog the fake software, which was then mailed out by someone identified in court documents as "J.R." of Amelia, Ohio -- presumably James Reno. Thought this would be a good End note for me. 7 anti-Apple cliches that need to die by Chris Rawson (RSS feed) on May 29th 2010 at 8:30PM PC vs. Mac flamewars are older than the web itself, but it seems like the more popular/successful Apple gets, the more heated the argument gets on both sides. Almost any debate about the relative merits of one platform or another is guaranteed to degenerate into an all-out shouting match. In the midst of all the fighting and name calling, the oddest thing happens: almost every time, you'll see a lot of the same points being raised by both sides again and again. Some of these points are so tired and worn out, they've reached cliche status. In online debates, there's an informal rule known as Godwin's Law, whereby if you invoke references or comparisons to Nazis or Hitler, you've automatically lost the debate. I say the items on this list have become so worn out they've reached automatic rhetorical failure status on their own. I know that every time I see one of these points appear, I immediately stop any serious consideration of any other arguments from the person who brought it up. 12 diggs digg I'm focusing on Apple haters and their cliches for this article, but don't get the idea that Apple users aren't just as guilty of cliche-ridden arguments when they argue against using Windows. If, for example, you're an Apple user and you do any of these things: -- Cite the Blue Screen of Death (or BSOD, as he's known to his closest friends) as a point against Windows -- Insert a dollar sign into Microsoft's name (Micro$oft, M$) -- Use "clever" alternate spellings of Windows (Windoze and other less family-friendly revisions) -- Call Internet Explorer "Internet Exploder" you're employing a heavily-cliched, Godwin-esque talking point, too. Read on for the seven deadly cliches of anti-Mac attacks. 1. Fanboy Long ago this word actually meant something, as you can discover in this excellent article from Technologizer, but it's become so overused in the past few years that it's become meaningless. Once upon a time, "fanboy" as an insult meant someone had an overweening and maybe even creepy obsession with something or other. Maybe you had a Klingon-themed wedding, complete with uniforms, makeup, and vows in the Klingon language? That would have made you a Star Trek fanboy (we prefer the term "Trekker," good sir). If you spray-painted a big number "3" on the side of your Ford and had an entire set of Dale Earnhardt commemorative plates in your den, that meant you were a NASCAR fanboy. But "fanboy" has been used so much in Apple vs. PC wars that it's lost its flavor. "You're just an Apple fanboy," is a dismissive debate tactic, used to imply that someone is so blinded by their love for all things Apple that they'd say or do anything to support the company and its products. I don't deny that there are Apple users like that out there, but "fanboy" has been spread so thin that almost anyone with a positive opinion of Apple's products is saddled with that label. It's even reached the mainstream press now, and as all internet veterans know, once something goes mainstream, it's played out. "Fanboy" is so tired that I've started something new: if I see any anti-Apple argument longer than a couple sentences or so, I start scanning for that word first. If I see "fanboy" written anywhere, I don't even bother reading the rest. The worst thing about "fanboy" is it's really just the pot calling the kettle black. If you're willing to dismiss someone else's opinions because you think they have some kind of cult-like obsession, there's a good chance you've got one, too. 2. Kool-Aid Speaking of cult-like obsessions, I've lost count of how many times I've been accused of "drinking the Apple Kool-Aid." This cliche got its start after nearly 1000 members of the Jonestown cult drank poison-laced Flavor-Aid back in 1978. It's meant to imply blind devotion, with the idea that Mac users are all members of some kind of crazy, wide-eyed commune with Steve Jobs as its inspirational but depraved leader. I'll admit we don't help matters much ourselves: lots of Mac users turn into platform evangelists, sometimes to an irritating degree, and we've even adopted the term "Cult of Mac" to describe behaviors that really could be described as "fanboyism." But just like "fanboy," the "Kool-Aid" thing gets said at least 100,000 times a day on the internet, for the same reason as "fanboy" -- a means of dismissing the other side's points because you think they've been brainwashed. Guys, "Kool-Aid" has lost its punch. Besides, I prefer the Apple Colt 45. It works every time. 3. No games Ever heard this one? "Good luck playing games on your overpriced Fisher Price laptop, oh wait, there aren't any, hahaha." My copies of Civilization IV, Bioshock, and now Portal say otherwise. Macs do have far fewer games than Windows-running PCs, and even though Valve just launched Steam for the Mac, PCs will probably always have more games than Macs. That said, things have improved since the early- to mid-2000s -- the last time this argument had some merit. Fewer and fewer AAA titles are PC-only these days, and considering how successful Steam for the Mac has been so far, the days of the Mac as a neglected gaming platform are over. Besides, show me how many PC or Mac gamers only game on their computers. I've got a PS3, Wii, DS, and iPhone, with a grand total of over 150 games between all of those platforms. Gaming on my Mac is kind of an afterthought; until Portal came out for the Mac in early May, I think the last time I did any serious gaming on my MacBook Pro was in December of last year. My consoles are for games, my Mac is for work, and my iPhone falls somewhere in the middle. But that doesn't mean I never game on my Mac because there's "no games" for it -- there's now more games for the Mac than I even have time to demo, much less play. 4. One-button mouse This one is older than dirt and only half as tasty. What's funniest about the "one-button mouse" argument is that Apple's Magic Mouse and trackpads now essentially have no buttons, so we should be talking about a "no button mouse" instead, right? I'll admit that Apple's obsession with killing off buttons is a little weird, but it's had zero effect on my workflow. My MacBook Pro's trackpad is configurable to an almost excessive degree thanks to multitouch and tools like BetterTouchTool. Right now I can click, right-click, middle-click, scroll, three, four, or five-finger swipe in four different directions, pinch, expand, rotate, four-finger tap... and those are just the options I've enabled. With multitouch, my trackpad can recognize up to eleven different points of contact, meaning the possibilities are nearly endless. All of that on a trackpad with only one button. Say what you will about Apple's war on buttons, but I've played all the way through both Bioshock and Portal using just my MacBook Pro's built-in trackpad, with no external mouse. That's not something I'd even attempt to do on a non-Apple trackpad, no matter how many buttons it comes with. 5. Any reference to 1984 Ever since the App Store launched, with its draconian and often Byzantine rules on what is or is not acceptable in the store, roughly 574,892 articles have come out retreading the 1984 theme. Apple kind of brought this one on themselves with that Super Bowl ad 26 years ago; iconic as it was, you just knew people would someday jump at the chance to get all "ironic" and say that Apple is now the "Big Brother" they once decried. Which is exactly what's happened, of course, because not a week goes by now without at least five articles mentioning Steve Jobs and Big Brother in the same sentence. Here's a quick challenge: name the protagonist, or any other character besides Big Brother, from Orwell's novel... without using Google or Wikipedia. If you can do it, then kudos to you: go right on using that epic cliche of a comparison. Although last time I checked, nobody's going to storm your house, put a gun to your head, and direct you to store.apple.com and force you to buy anything it sells. Additionally, Apple still doesn't have an equivalent of Room 101 at the Cupertino campus. Maybe they'll announce it at WWDC. 6. "Apple is the new Microsoft" Apple isn't the new Microsoft. You know why not? Because other than Windows 7 and Office, the "new" Microsoft doesn't know how to make a successful product. The Zune tanked. The KIN will tank. Windows Phone Blake's 7 (or whatever they're calling it this week) is going to tank. The Xbox, for all the market penetration it has, is a loss leader for Microsoft even after five years on the shelves. Internet Explorer's market share, which was overwhelming ten years ago, is inching downward toward 50%. Apple's market cap just surpassed Microsoft's, and the reason why had just as much to do with Microsoft's financial free-fall as it has Apple's ascendance. If anything, Apple is more like the old Microsoft. So fat with cash it can buy just about whatever it wants. Dominance in at least one industry, thanks to the iPod. A tight grip on public mindshare of what a smartphone is and is capable of doing, because of the iPhone. And yes, I'll admit it: a growing overconfidence, bordering on arrogance. Apple isn't the "new" Microsoft. It's got far more in common with the Microsoft of the mid-90s, when it was on top of its game and had yet to be smacked down by regulators or competitors. But the comparisons run thin when you look at the numbers behind them, because unlike mid-90s Microsoft, Apple doesn't have a monopoly on anything. Worldwide Mac marketshare is near 5%. The iPhone's worldwide marketshare among smartphones is about 16%, and something like 2-3% when we're talking about cellphones as a whole. iTunes Store sales account for about 27% of music sold in the US. The iPod is the closest thing Apple has to a monopoly, but even that has a 70% or so marketshare -- not the massive dominance of Windows or Office. Mid-90s Microsoft was a colossus, capable of steamrolling the competition into dust. Its reputation was earned and deserved -- I mean, it got to the point that Bill Gates even demolished Homer Simpson's half-baked little startup. The Apple of 2010 wields a lot of power, and it sometimes does it in a very heavy-handed manner... but name one thing Apple's done that even comes close to what Microsoft did to Netscape Navigator. 7. Smug Mac users This last one needs to die for a different reason: because unlike any of the others, this one is often true. Mac geeks, you're all guilty of this. So am I, right now, in this article. There's me, something like 700 words ago: "I'd never try to use the trackpad on one of their laptops, hur hur hur." We look down our noses at Windows and computers without Apple logos on them. We justify paying a little more for our Macs by talking about build quality, reliability, and the ability to run OS X with the same borderline snooty tones as BMW owners describing the merits of their cars versus a Ford. "Macs never crash," we lie. "OS X runs so much better than Windows," we say through clenched teeth, right before adjusting our ascots. The "Get a Mac" ads didn't do our image any favors. I'm glad those ads have been retired, because I hated them for the same reason a lot of Apple haters did. John Hodgeman's PC character was a loser, but he was a loveable loser, the kind of character a lot of us geeks can identify with. Justin Long's Mac character, whether intentionally or not, radiated smugness. I may be a Mac user, but I'd rather have a beer with "PC" than frappuccinos with "Mac" any day. I think this smugness, whether it's perceived or actual smugness, is what fuels most of the anti-Apple hatred these days. If you don't own an iPhone and have no intention of buying one, then it's no skin off your back if Apple runs its App Store like "Stalinist Russia" or "Nazi Germany" or "North Korea" or whatever bit of hyperbole is in vogue this week. If you don't own a Mac and don't want to, then why does the opinion of a measly 5% of the computing world even matter? I'm willing to bet it's in large part because of the Smug. So there you have it: six cliches that need to die because they're inherently dumb, and one that needs to die because it's sometimes true. Go ahead and keep using them if you want, but at this point it's like busting out the "cabbage patch" in a dance contest: may be good for laughs, but no points awarded. As always, feel free to disagree with me, because what do I know? I'm just a smug, Kool-Aid drinking fanboy, who never gets to play any games on his one-button computer thanks to Big Brother Steve and the New Microsoft. Techies, Apologies for the misleading subject line. It was just a dream I had a few mins ago. Anyway, in the dream, banks will be accepting facebook friends as collateral. Many of us know how hard it is to get a loan from a bank. The ask for collateral which, if you had, you'd not be asking for the loan in the first place. So, what if banks 'banked' on what many youth can claim 'ownership': Facebook friends! This is how it would work: - The amount of loan you will get will depend on how many friends you have on FB - The guarantor MUST be your friend on FB - You must share at least x no of mutual friends with the guarantor(s) - You shall accept the bank as a friend - The bank will post on your wall *repeatedly* a payment due message if and when you default (Think of the embarrassment!) - The bank will post the same message above on your guarantor's wall - You shall not 'like' an overdue message on your wall. Its not funny and negates the whole point of embarrassing you

I recently withdrew money from none Stanchart..ATM and since i withdrew all i had...i ended up with overdraft of the ATM charge of 250. Am surprised eti they charge interest of 950 for overdraft...so an overdraft of 220 had grown to 2120. interest of 1900 for just 60 days..... Extremely lame Mpesa question !

Hi OK, I admit it... I have been in Kenya for years and never used Mpesa !! In fact, I have been (and still is) a Zain (or Celtel or Yes) customer for years. But I need to send money to someone in Narok. Just trying to see if there is any website online that allows me to send money to an registered Mpesa user with Paypal or VISA/Mastercard. Really don't want to loose my time at a Mpesa kiosk. I've added the my comments on www.projectkenya.info Gents, Ladies please do use the site to add yourself and your projects because I set it up for the general tech community. I've got no vested interests in the site except that it was a good idea at the time to put up a wiki. As soon as the new server is in place, I hope the wiki can revert to a local domain under skunks. Am also adding the to my twitter account. Looking back and comparing where we wanted to head to, somewhere along the line we somehow lost our focus as correctly pointed out by other members on the list a short while ago. I can assure you no more Queen Bee bashing from me except for the general good. :-) A better suggestion would be if iHUB allows such postings, discussions and some sort of projects board then there would be need to avoid duplicating to other sites or lists and collectively bring together the tech community. However, iHUB maybe limited by business terms and conditions so it would be understandable that they may restrict themselves to issues that relate to their nature of business. Have a nice weekend and see your wonderful projects and tech aspirations on the site. Asante. :-)
