Ahoy Skunkers of both night and day.. I have a Linux print server running CUPS and samba where I want to connect windows clients. i.e. windows machines to print from this server. I do not want to install drivers on the windows machines as this beats the purpose of having a print server in the first place. I want them on the print server. The server is running FC8, the hosts are on XP and Win 7. Anyone with an idea how I can share the windows drivers on the fc8 server? Regards, George.

Jambo skunk(ette)s, Now I have this report wher a certain field is populated by multiplying 2 fields from 2 different tables. At the group footer I want the summation to display. I have the fomular working for indiviual records I pull to the report, but when it comes to summation it adds extra figures (i.e 20 if they are 2 records , 30 if thay are 3 records ...) and I can't figure where they come from. Can anyone tell me what am I doing wrong? Ken.

Been reading some article.......They need to know we are in the data age and not the traditional voice era. And the data era we are in is not a few kilobits per second but broadband on mobile networks. Kencell, then Celtel then Zain gave empty promises on data services such as 3G. With Safaricom heading to 4G hopefully, is Airtel trying to re-invent the wheel on rural tele-density? Low cost high volume model is every telcos dream, will they be able to pull it off without any more investments in infrastructure? The official launch is in October this year........... Since am in the Orange camp ( Orange TKL Kenya ) , I wonder when they go 3G? Me thots.

IDG News Service — MySQL users now have another choice for support besides Oracle, which acquired the open-source database through its purchase of Sun Microsystems. SkySQL plans to offer "enterprise class support & services for the MySQL ecosystem," according to its Web site. Its CEO is Ulf Sandberg, ex-senior vice president of global services at MySQL, and "all core members" of the company have also worked for MySQL. The firm is now hiring in all areas, the site adds. Further information about its plans wasn't immediately available Friday. @Brainia, I don't work for KENIC so i cannot purport to talk on their behalf on staffing, but you realise a company more so a PPP model like KENIC must have structure like a board, credit control, audit, marketing, customer care, administrative managers, and techies, and other I might have overlooked. The prices can be lowered if KENIC has seed capital to cushion it for the lack of profit. But again, will there be more uptake on .ke domains just because the prices have been lowered? Are we patriotic enough to carry our brand on our shoulders? We have enough .ke extensions that compete well with gTLD equivalents. .ac.ke, .me.ke, and .sc.ke are good examples priced at KES500. But I still see many schools and colleges going for the .com and .org nevertheless .za domains are not that cheap either because they move for about RS110 despite the huge marketshare they command @Katembu, thank you for capturing wanjuki's views correctly. Rookie question: If I have wireless internet connection (via wifi), cabled internet connection and an internet connection via a, say, safcom modem, how do I tell which connection is being used by the system by default? Assume there are no restrictions in the ie connection options. I have my reasons for asking :)

In squid, if I wanted to allow access to google.com and any subdomains, I'd specify a dstdomain rule in an ACL. So I can do: .google.com, .yahoo.com, .gmail.com, etc. Not with ISA! Does anyone know how to achieve the same with ISA (2004 here, btw)?? If someone visits yahoo.com and it comes up with yahoo.com/something, ISA denies it. Strathmore University has in place an ICT incubation initiative called Strathmore Innovation Technology Transfer program, SITT. The program seeks to commercialize ICT innovation locally. The program is interested in working with young Kenyan ICT entrepreneurs /innovators/students. Lately, you can pay your electricity bill, water bill etc…through this medium. Their usage has increased and we have branded it innovation, creativity, but are we being oblivious of the implications? Where or who do you approach in loss of your money? KPLC or Safaricom/Zain?etc and many other services that we are paying for using MPESA/ZAP b) b) E-voting Definition: is an election system that allows a voter to record his or her secure and secret ballot electronically. First download the application from this link..(2 MB) http://www.mediafire.com/file/vzximyi1ttm/MoPHS.zip The application allows for mass messaging multiple recipients. Should look like the attached screenshot. Download, unzip and run. It will enable you to send sms messages using a data enabled modem or phone (i'd recommend the Safaricom E 160 Huawei modem using a safaricom line). The other modems have not been tested but will also work as well. I think its functionality is pretty obvious. Add a new contact. To filter select the column headers to choose a specific criteria. The box at the bottom is where you enter the message then click send. The modem is automatically detected and messages sent to the contacts based on the criteria set as shown in the screenshot attached. NB: Set to expire after 60 days...supposed to be an integral component of the new version of Trendy Desktop (http://sites.google.com/site/jacobayienda/trendy-desktop/TrendyInst_v1.0.zi…) Its incredibly small and fast compared to Frontline SMS which is interpreted. IPV6- the regulatory angle, Yesterday,on Regulation McTim,said and I quote “I am of the opinion that if a person or org wants to live in a v4 world, then a nation state sholdn't preclude them from doing that. Having said that, I think it would be useful to point out that most (if not all) kit imported (new and used) is either v6 ready or with a few software changes, can be made v6 ready.” What is your thought? Should we be concerned about e.g the hardware getting into our country ? And if we should, who should be in charge of that? Reactions? Today , we add 3. .ke ccTLD management (Kenya Country Top Level Domain) *Kenya Network Information Center (KENIC)* was borne through a broad based consultative process of the "Local Internet Community" with an aim to institute a local non-profit organization to manage and operate the .KE ccTLD. This was an initial step to facilitate growth of the Internet sub-sect and foster the uptake of ICT's in the country through a public private partnership (ppp's). www.kenic.or.ke KENIC has been managing the .ke , since its inception, but last year, The Kenya Communications (Amendment) Act of 2009 mandated the Commission to provide public policy oversight on the administration and management of the dot KE country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD). http://www.e- government.go.ke/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_details&gid=1&Itemid=119 1. A message sent by Mr. Walubengo, before the discussions begun and I quote “ I just have an update from yesterday's KENIC AGM (www.kenic.or.ke) where the Chair, Sammy Buruchara made some clarification on the role of the regulator (CCK) with regards to the management of the 2nd level Kenyan domain name space. While he conceded that the Kenya Comm. Act (2009) does mandate the Regulator to oversee these subdomains, the Minister had yet to issue regulations on how it would be done because most stakeholders have shown concern and reservations on that specific clause...meaning status quo remains where the multistakeholder, public private partnership that makes up KENIC still manages and oversees all levels of the .KE namespace untill hopefully some consensus is reached on the way forward...” Why has it taken this long for the Minister to act? Is there a system/process and is it underway? I would love to hear from the knowledgeable people, what effect has this had in the market, more especially for the Registrars. Hi guys, I'm trying to access office wireless connection from laptop for the first time without much success. Everything seems to be ok but it keeps saying that there's no network in range (well there is one!). This is on XP. On Ubuntu on the same machine, wireless network option is disabled. What am I doing wrong? Please help. While we're at it, I can't tell if the machine has bluetooth or not, though it's supposed to. OT: how to handle yourself when caught by city council - in light of new by-laws !

This is a narration by one caught by city council askaris - and his advise for those who may be caught by the same hippies. This comes in light of the new by-laws, that have taken power to "cough" away from the citizens, and given dark sith powers to city council. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For your understanding and educating your friends and relatives. Maybe you’ve been caught on the wrong side of the City Council by-laws or haven’t yet. If you’re one of those ones who haven’t, let me share my experience at the hands of city council askaris. I was unsuspectingly buying myself a stick of gum, when I was nabbed by the askaris. It took me a few minutes to wrap my head around what was happening. I was quickly informed that it was a crime to purchase goods from a hawker, and after lying through my teeth in a bid to convince them to let me go, I was berated for being ignorant and immediately marched to a city council vehicle that was parked nearby. The last time I checked the hawker who had sold me gum was right behind me, accompanied by another askari but to my surprise, I was the only one who got into the pick up! I guess City Council is synonymous to Kitu Kidogo because everyone who gave them some cash was let go in the course of our journey around the town center, as we looked for other ‘unfortunate’ Kenyans. After the final lap, we were taken to the City council Offices at city hall, where the magistrate briskly gave out sentences for such misdemeanors; I was shocked to be fined Sh2,000 for buying a stick of gum, while hawkers were getting away with a day’s work at the council offices, or a bribe of 500 bob. So there it is… bribery in this case is cheaper than justice. Truth is with the new rules (cash cows) that have been put in place, there are bound to be many victims of ignorance. Needless to say, I was late for work but learned a very valuable lesson, CCN is always watching! Below is a list of the 10 petty offences that I witnessed being charged in the Nairobi City Court as I waited for my turn. Beware: The City’s deadliest sins 1. Buying from hawkers 2. Sitting on a flower pot in the CBD 3. Spitting on any footpath or blowing the nose aimlessly other than into a suitable cloth or tissue 4. Taking or alighting from a matatu from a non-designated area 5. Crossing the road while you are on the phone 6. Making any kind of noise on the streets 7. Playing any game, riding or driving or propelling on a foot path 8. Graffiti 9. Owner of a burning building should pay for fire fighting services whether the owner requested for attendance or not. 10. Loitering, importuning or attempting to procure a female/male for prostitution purposes. 11. Having you car with a ‘FOR SALE’ sign and haven’t paid the council is also punishable. The City’s survival tips 1. The moment you get into the council courts and charged, please plead guilty because only then, will you be allowed to pay a fine of a maximum of Sh2000. If you deny the charges you may be arrested for two days with no fine. 2. Do not argue with the council askaris if you know that you are guilty as charged. You might just double your fine. 3. Bribes are unacceptable after/immediately the lorry has entered the city council’s compound. 4. M-PESA is not allowed to pay for a crime. 5. Someone else MUST pay your fine. You cannot pay the fine yourself after you have been charged. Ø The other day I saw Kanjo arresting a man for pulling his suit case on its wheels, they want you to carry it n not pull it - yet to find out the fine.

ISA 2004 Help Required

I happen to be familiar with Unix firewalls but this Microsoft one is another - simply does not obey my rules. I need someone expert with it to help me out. I have a LAN in the 192.168.0.0 - 255.255.0.0 address range. ISA is running on SBS 23k. This PC has is multi-homed, with one public interface. I need to do the following: 1. Allow pop3, pop3s, smtp, smtps, imap and imaps for everyone 2. Deny ALL Internet Access except to a few hosts. These exempted hosts have static IPs dished out via DHCP servers running either on the SBS or Cisco. Now this is what I have attempted. (a) Policy no. 1: Action = Deny; Protocols = All outbound traffic except selected (like above), From = Internal (with Exceptions), To = External (b) Policy no. 2: Action = Allow; Protocols = Selected (FTP, HTTP, HTTPS) >From = Internal; To = Selected Websites .... Then I have the default Last Rule that DENYs everything. What happens is that rule 1 stops the guys even from Accessing their e-mails and does NOT allow the PCs in the Exception list to access the Internet. Hey IT minds, I need some understanding my external HDD (1.0TB Trancend) has been performing smartly 400mbps on USB and upto 3GB on eSATA. Just the other day I tried ejecting it on some unusual machine and it refused to eject and I shut it down using it's hard disk switch the next minute I tried on the next machine to copy 700mb (I gave up waiting) till a message pop u[ delay write failed... Java question (Urgent help needed!)

Hi, I am running a process using the java Runtime class like so. Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("gksu rfcomm connect 0 0B:D4:91:39:66:01"); I now want to get the process ID of process p that is returned in the above statement. I have tried using: Field field = p.getClass().getDeclaredField("pid"); field.setAccessible(true); this.pid=field.getInt(p); //this.pid is an int value System.out.println("process is running +"+pid); but the pid that is printed does not match what I get when I run the ps tool in the shell. It is important that they match because I want to run a Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("gksu kill -9 "+pid); when I am done with the rfcomm tool. ALTERNATIVELY: Someone please tell me how to send a CTRL-C signal after I have run the Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("gksu rfcomm connect 0 0B:D4:91:39:66:01"); code. -- Mimano G. Have been experiencing slow speeds only to learn that Seacom is down. To quote their twitter updates "We note SEACOM services between Mumbai and Mombasa are down since 9:19 GMT/5th July 10. We are still investigating. More updates to follow." A google adsense question

hello skunks. First and foremost, I have googled this unsuccessfully. The answers i get are either different or do not address the question i have in particular. So here is my dilemma. I run a large network, i have set up a transparent proxy/gateway to enable chaching, load balancing and all that kind of stuff. Most of the clients will thus be served error pages from my squid proxy. I have seen from my logs that traffic on the 404 and two other error pages is quite high, which made me think. What if i were to load a google adsense page, or even a search result page generated from the failed query. I have researched and the technical aspect is in place, now all i need to know is if it violates the TOS for adsense. Anyone know this ? / in google? -- Posted on 100% recycled electrons

OT : A disappointing trip to Robben Island...

Had some time off yesterday so off to Robben Island. The tour lasted about 3 hours and was not sure what to expect once I get there. Upon arriving there via the ferry, a bus takes you on a tour of the various spots and the session is a bit informed. However, for me the main reason of the visit was to try and get a feel or an insight of what Mandela went through, including many others who were labelled terrorists and held here during the aparthied era. What were the prison conditions like, what kind of regime abuses were they subject to etc especially when aparthied resistance was at its climax? Upon reaching the main prison, it is well painted and kept very clean. A former prisoner there leads the tour and takes questions. He was jailed for life because of failed attempt in trying to rpg a fuel convoy. He was arrested immediately and charged. One thing is certain, you cannot have escaped the island and there were various punishments on the groups. The problem I have with Robben Island and esp the prison quarters is that they have painted the cells, courtyards etc. This creates a false impression. Even Mandela's cell seems very live-able. I wish they had retained the original paint, the original feel. It was not easy to understand what really went on there. The courtyard where Mandela and other spent time has a small garden started by Mandela but I almost walked over it, thinking it was weeds etc. Somehow I did not connect to the island nor take in what happened. It's easier to google and learn more than going there. This is why we fail, IMHO. For a start, Robben Island should have hand held audio devices ( found in many sites world wide, even Stone Henge has them..) , properly labelled areas and ofcourse they should have retained the original " decor " as it was many years ago. I kind of left the island disappointed and could hear others on the trip felt the same too. But the island is a worthy trip, you know you cannot escape it if you ended up there......... -- On hi, i have just received this email.............quite disturbing. take care and sambaza to all the people you care about. This incident happened to a colleague recently.A bad experience indeed. He received a call from someone claiming to be calling from Safaricom.The caller was very composed. The caller told him 'thank you for being our loyal and valuable MPESA customer.You recall we had initially given you a black Sim card but changed to green".He answered in the affirmative.The caller then went ahead to tell him that Safaricom was running a reward promotion scheme for their loyal MPESA customers and went ahead to ask him to confirm his National ID number and year of birth.Unsuspecting,he disclosed that information.Coincidentally his birth year was also his Mpesa pin no. The guy posed for a while and asked him whether 19- - (say 1967) was his year of birth.He again answered in the affirmative. The caller then told him he would be sent Nokia 8230, but before then he needed to dial *33*0000# ,which he did.He was then told not to call or transact anything using his line for the next ten minutes as they perfrom transactions,purportedly at Safaricom,facilitating the process of receiving the Nokia 8230 set.He complied.He is asked about his current location,which information he gives. After 10 minutes he tried to call back the number to confirm status of the alleged gift only for the following message to appear :"Barring all outgoing calls activated for SMS services activated for all data circuit async". After 15 minutes the wife calls him on his alternate line claiming that some one had called her using his (husband"s ) safaricom line telling her to send them Ksh.10,000 for his release from arrest.She is baffled and hence decides to use alternate line,only to discover he is safe and sound. In the meantime the wife calls safaricom to block the line,but it was too late,as all the money in his MPESA had been withdrawn. What is apparent is that this line was blocked by the code he typed ,viz *33*0000#. The question uppermost in mind is how it could be unblocked without some form of connivance by Safaricom staff.He had a substantial amount in his Mpesa account.Could these thugs be getting targeting lines-with good balances through connivance with Safaricom staff. It is unlikely Safaricom will admit culpability,but tujichunge wenyewe.Keep safe. The caller identified himself as Alex Omondi(Of course fake name) and called using 0720 464 777 Guys,kaeni chonjo.
