ZTE Safaricom modem

Hi guys, I have a ZTE Safaricom modem (model MF637U ) and 1.5GB of data on my safaricom line. But anytime I try to connect to the internet, I get this message. *A connection to the remote computer could not be established, so the port used for this connection was closed.* What could be the problem? Every time a new tech launches, Man craves it. Granted it takes a while to implement for example the automobile transition from Horse and Carriage. But once it picks up.. e.g. the iOS devices, Man goes GAGA! What's the internet doing to us? Open discussion here. Recovering data from laptop hdd

Hi dudes & dudettes, A while back I asked about my options to recover data from a my laptop's HDD which crashed. It's a HP Pavilion DV6000. Anyway, I did get some helpful offers including one from a guy who asked me to take him the HDD in an external HDD enclosure, but I was too busy+traveling so I didn't have the time.. It's been a while since, and I can't seem to find that email, it's buried under tons of others. I'll be back in +254 next week and want to give it a try - I'd really appreciate it if the dude responds to this so we can link up. When a whole ISP go down

Morning, I understand there's another major fibre outage resulting to ISP being grounded. At least I know one that is down now. It has taken me a while to know this as the calls to the ISP ISDN line were going unanswered. This is very common with many ISP's in Kenya when they have an outage they just ignore or refuse to take calls. I was just wondering when our ISP will start getting concerned of the effect that an outage has on a modern company. One of the ISP client I know is a health insurance company and do alot of correspondence via email. They now have to use alternative means to send hospital authorization letters, their clients have to call them to reach them. Some patients may have to wait longer before they are admitted to hospital and some may have life threatening conditions. Who will pay for all these costs? Does anyone ever think about this? I think someone needs to sue these guys once of course with a water tight SLA so they can start taking their seriously and keeping by their promises (whatever 99.9% availability means on Internet SLA's in Kenya). My other concern is the communication because as a result of the downtown you can imagine how much money is wasted as people make calls for technical support. Why cant they broadcast a message on radio for example at least this would save some of their clients all the calls. my thoughts regards, James

A general comment. Queen Bee has dropped bamba pre-paid rates and has just made it as affordable as when Orange 3g+ was on the Ksh1/Mbyte service. So for Ksh 4000/- I can get 4GB of data, while I hear their unlimited is not doing too badly except that the maximum package is 128kbps. How does it get negative review ? I’m one bridge over” or "Close the dispute with the credit card company if you know whats good for you,” he wrote. “Do the right thing and everyone goes away. I AM WATCHING YOU!" So he's looking for an ISP with low downtimes, fair cost and excellent customer service. DVB Technology Change over

I have some good news and some bad news. Bad news for early adapters to Digital Television like myself and great news for those who have not bought Set Top Boxes (STBs). The Government of Kenya has decided to change over from DVB-T http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVB-T to DVB-T2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVB-T2) technology, just like that (mutado?) The main difference being the number of channels that can be carried with T2 offering greater efficiency than it's predecessor. The point of contention is this, for Nairobi and greater Nairobi where the initial deployment was done, they'll carry on with Simulcast (transmitting both) until 2012 when they'll switch off DVB-T. This means for those who've bought them STBs you'll have no option but to dump the current one and get a T2 compatible one. FYI this was a News item yesterday and there's no consultation with the public. Cmon Ministry of Communication you can do better than this, I also think they'll switch off faster DVB-T sooner than 2012. Let's wait and see. Had to share this. A random guy just called me from a Safaricom number (0701-582665) to say that I have won 50 K and wanted to take me through how to access the loot. I decided to play along. Guy: Congratulations, you've won yourself 50K. Before we proceed I need to confirm that you are the real owner of this number. (OKAY) Guy: What is your name: (I say Joseph Kamau*) * not real Guy: Confirmed it is in the system. When was the last time you used M-Pesa and How much did you send? (TODAY, I SENT 10K)...confirmed. if we send you 50 K now, what will be your new balance (70K, i said)..OK Guy: Now we have a set of two numbers which you will need to enter in your phone. They will help 'EXPAND' your Mpesa account to be able to hold more than 50K. Please give us a another line we can reach you on to take you through the process of retrieving your win. (I GAVE HIM MY Airtel LINE) GUY CALLS MY AIRTEL...Now we have the winning number and a code number. Go to the Mpesa menu and press okay twice. Hi Guys, Am trying to configure my Mobile phone's Sip dialer to be able to call my office as an extension over a public ip Through the safaricom internet in my phone..I can comfortably do this when am on wifi in any hot sport area bt i cnt seem to go through when i try it on Safaricom internet in my phone. i Get the message operation blocked.. or smthing of that sort. Is there a way to bipass this wall. And the other part i cn use a softphone on my laptop to call the office using a Safaricom dongle... Wat the hell could be going on ... is safaricom just being a smartass or smthn.. If u hv configurations tht could works let me know. The scenario is as follows; -three sites about 20 Km apart from each other. -Line of sight can be achieved by building a mast of approx 50m at each of the sites. -Are there any licenses necessary?? etc. Kindly give me your comments. Now that M-Pesa system was upgraded successfully, what are the new benefits it introduced? I don't keep a single contact on the SIM card, and I don't intend to. All my contacts are in phone memory. Do I have to save those contacts to whom I send pesa on the SIM card for me to use the "lookup" facility? Aren't the developers good enough to make the lookup use phone memory-based contacts? ;-) Ok. What else did they introduce with the upgrade? @Collins, thank you for taking the time to respond on a list. You have replied to almost all my queries and am 90% sold on the idea of switching over. There are a few more queries, hope you will respond asap. 1) How much and where can I buy the modem as I saw from your website about the 50% offer? 2) Once I have the modem, how do I activate the un-capped 256kbps services? 3) Are there plans to bring in un-capped 512kbps & 1Mbit services and at what rates? 4) Given the minimum throughputs that indicated at peak times, how will these be 3) above? 5) "Tortured Bandwidth" . I know the tech part etc but I'd like to know whether internet traffic is being tortured into classes/priorities therefore making it useless for my needs. Orange 3g+ was the only provider to have clean traffic until recently when they went down the road as other providers. On 3g+ the main class is http, then followed by ftp. For example, I urgently needed to download a 240MBytes file on ftp yet I could only get about 60kbps which made it impossible to use the services anymore. As a better example, in the earlier days a cyber could use 64kbps and serve 4 computers. These days the same 64kbps has been tortured into working on a handset only. 6) If you could provide a specs link for the modem, I think its kyocera but want to ensure it woks with my wifi gear. 2011 : Bringing together ideas, ISPs, Content Providers and Developers

We are on the final month of this year, I remember the same time last year we had good discussions on DTV and EPG, 2010 developer of the year awards and many more fantastic ideas that never happened. What can we aspire to do next year? >From my side at least two projects will be online ( soho crm & catalogue web app systems ) and hopefully local uptake by providers will not be too difficult, though I now have some other avenues too. I've got a number of other projects lined up but not enough time to complete them. I'd like to list 2 of them, hopefully I will get to them at some point. These ideas are now in the public domain but mandatory credits will be necessary if anyone uses them. 1) A service provider web based Kenyan Driving Test Simulator which will cover online self-tests on the highway code, with a virtual enviroment of the actual test. 2) A service provider web based Robotics game that brings reality of interaction between web visitors and the devices. This can be an annual event. As you may notice, am staying more onto web applications for providers ( at least that's the hope ). Maybe it is time for ISPs, Content Providers to create a wish list for 2011 so that developers can pick what they can do. Or if you have a wish list, you may add it to this thread. Who knows, some ideas may just take off in the right directions. This will be my last posting for a while as have much to catchup on but please do try and make 2011 have some significant steps towards development of software, services or content. Rgds. :-)

I read various articles on the amount of new construction going on and this sector to me is quite baffling. I think the recent report by the CBK puts home mortgages at around 14,000 kenyans. Our borrowing bank interest rates and repayments are still too high compared to incomes. Where are people getting the money to buy/invest into real estate because everywhere you see, some new construction on residetial types is coming up and also being sold quite fast. Property prices have really shot up while earnings have not increased in comparison. So who is buying these expensive properties? Any economist here in skunks KE to add some insights. :-) Rgds.

For those who may be new to the subject, let me take you back to the days when AFOL had dialup units in call bureaus. These dialup units were specifically used on TKL ISDN lines. ISDN standard for voice has been the benchmark for a lot of voip standards. You may google these to get a better idea. In reality, G703/G711 is the only acceptable voice quailty standard however the need for clean internet bandwidth is of utmost importance. ISDN BRI was considered the true mulit-media platform but costs made its acceptance slow. In Voip, your aim is to try and be close to the standard therefore ensure that your network does not suffer from basics like packet drop, jitter. You could use other encoders to compress but the voice quailty cannot be same. Keep this in mind when designing such services or platforms. Over to voip gurus on this list for more inputs. :-) Rgds.

Hi all, I have been wondering if there is a basis in law preventing someone from changing jobs to join a competitor (a similar business). I know most organizations have a clause in their employment contract preventing an employee for working for a similar business for a certain duration of time. But I see it happening in the media industry and Telcos all the time. Also, I remember sometime back a judge throwing out such a case (a media house against some employee) on the basis that the employer could not deny a person the use his skills to earn a living. John and Jane each have accounts at forty different Websites. John uses the same password at all of them because it is too difficult to maintain multiple passwords in his head, while Jane uses a password manager to ensure she can use a different password for each site without having to remember any of them. Both of them have memberships at example.com, and by some twist of fate they both end up using the same password, OJ01GzVWR5. In fact, they both use the exact same forty Websites. Along comes Pat, a malicious security cracker. Pat manages to bypass the incredibly deficient security at example.com and download the unencrypted database of usernames and passwords. With this database in Pat’s grasp, the malicious security cracker makes a list of a hundred high-value Websites, mostly including financial institutions. Pat starts running the username and password pairs in the unauthorized copy of the authentication database. Because Pat’s strategy involves entering each username and password combination only once, a direct attempt to access each of the hundred sites once per account name is all that is needed. This neatly avoids problems like the potential of being locked out of a highly secured site. In fact, it turns most sites — however well-designed — into a trivial exercise to access under someone else’s credentials, as long as some people use the same username and password everywhere. The end result is that Jane’s bank account remains secure, while John’s gets cleaned out the next day, and it is all because he took the advice of some security “expert” whose credentials largely consist of a piece of sheepskin and a job at a big-name security vendor that does not actually produce anything innovative. Sometimes, though, when advice sounds too good to be true, that is because it is not true. The perfect example is when someone tells you that you do not need unique passwords to be secure.

Hi all, I'm using Zuku on Ubuntu connected directly, without a router. It worked fine a few days after the connection then lost network. It says ethernet not connected. I tested the machine on a different Zuku connection with a router and it worked fine, so hardware is working. A MacBook connected directly without router works, so internet connection is working. Zuku customer care are not very helpful so far. Is there anyone with a similar setup? Ashok, Africa Online is still very much around and the company has not gone bankrupt. Our service is now very good, you should give it a try and send us your feedback. Aki - For Infinet Eazy the speed is upto 1MBps but during the day(peak times) the speed is normally around 300kbps and at night (off peak) the speeds get to around 700kbps on average. We have also recently introduced at Infinet Eazy option that is not capped on data but however the speed is capped at 256kbps. Apart from Infinet Eazy, we also have Infinet lite product that is capped on data at 2GB with speed of upto 1MBps and an option uncapped on data but capped on speed at 128kbps. Most of our clients use Skype and the voice quality is very good. The quality of conversations is again dependent on the signal quality. We have a website that the client can check their usage. We are in the process of coming up with a dashboard that will have a meter to enable clients see their usage. The modem does not have an in-built wifi, we normally advice our clients to purchase a wireless broadband router so that they can share the connection. Once the data is exhausted the client can buy top up cards at any Nakumatt Fone express shops or Chandarana Supermarkets (200MB for Kshs 500/= and 500MB for Kshs 1000/=) The coverage area is most of Nairobi, Nakuru, Eldoret, Kisumu, Mombasa and Thika. At one time, the technology investment done on the iBurst broadband platform was indeed ahead. I've looked up their site on various offering and it does not seem to be clear what they offer. For example the "infinet easy" service is of 4GB allocated bandwidth and @Ksh4999 +VAT. Has anyone used the infinet service bundles and would they share their experiences on the following : - How congested at peak times? What is the minimum data transfer rate in KILOBYTES/SEC? - How congested at off-peak times? What is the minimum data transfer rate in KILOBYTES/SEC? - How is the VOIP facility on shared bandwidth? Do you get a lot of drops on voice convestations? Does the voice sound muffled and is there any echos? - 4GB allocated bandwidth Do they provide a meter for the consumed bandwidth? - For home Wifi, does the modem support built-in wifi or is an external one needed? - Do they charge extra when one exhausts the allocated bandwidth? - If you know of coverage areas? - Link & Service reliability? Assume you want to do a large download, do the connections drop so you have to start all over again? Orange 3g+ has gone over the "patience rule". Frequent drops, very un-even speeds and lower throughputs. Hopefully when 3g comes online, they will improve on the 3g+ service. Rgds.

Gentlemen, Ladies. I'd wanted to build the project first before putting the announcements anywhere, however for this project I'd like to capture your inputs too. For all those who are involved in Physical to Network layer, your contribution will be a strong builder of this . Im sure you all understand the difficulties of not being able to do the practical parts without physical routers. Though there maybe an argument that one can buy or hack/get free copies etc of such simulators, we are going to try and create an open approach which may help students long term. - Proposal : as per subject - Hosting the Simulator : Our target is get to as many ISPs who are willing to host the Web Simulator ( it maybe difficult for them if they do not host IIS web services, so may have to route outside KE, which will be unfortunate ) and I really hope that ISPs will be will to work with us on this project. This will give many students access without creating the "sole ownership" approach. My wish is to avoid having just one site and outside KE. - Project time line : 16-24 weeks, after collection of all the data. I could have a skeleton ready for testing. - What help is needed: If you have access to routers or switches, then it will be a big help to get most of the the IOS commands from a CCNA point of view. The Web Simulator will contain 2 Routers and 1 switch. If you have done your CCNA recently and know what is covered on routing and switching well, then it would be a great help. Things like password recovery registers, stub or default routing, Ripv2 or even OSPF, BGP etc. - Credits : I'd like to be able to give necessary credits to those who contributed on the footer of the main page of the web application. I'm been wanting to do this project for a very long time and would appreciate all your help. I apologise if I've not listed all the details and you may have to be patient with me on the final delivery of the idea as am between many other things. However, I'd like to set a personal deadline of the project as above. All or any suggestions are welcomed, including those from fellow C# ASP.NETdevelopers. Asanteni. :-)

For the fans: The new Harry Potter movie "Deathly Hallows - Part 1" is totally amazing.. If you have read the book; the directors have really remained faithful to the book - and all chapters are in the movie. They even animated the small tale of "death and the deathly hallows"; and the action scenes; very well orchestrated. If you can catch it on 3D,, you will totally jump out of your seat. ==== 3D coming this week/or next in Nairobi ==== On other news;; I spoke to Sarit Center Cineplex (via phone); and they said that 3D movies will be available this week or the next (for movies with 3D) - possibly on iMAX (she dint know the proper technology details) But all the same - movie watching is gonna be totally awesome from this December !!!! Hi fellow geniuses, Having an issue with a Joomla template. It has a Moomenu module embedded in it and I have changed the slide show to use the RS-Catchy module. Now the drop down Moomenu hides behind the slideshow. Anyone had any experience like this and managed to resolve it?
