Abstract: Once your project grows "out of your bedroom", more people become involved in working on the project. With this comes several challenges as to how to "work together". In this talk I will present a template engine (SlowTemplate) which enables php code to be completely separated from HTML in your project. Using this approach you make it extremely easy for an HTML-developer and a programmer to work together, without stepping on each other toes (and ruining code for each-other). Further more it makes it much more easy to maintain an application, i.e. redesigns can be done completely without involving the programmer. Wesley Kirinya Title: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of J2ME. Abstract: J2ME has been marketed as one of the most popular platforms to develop for mobile, but just how practical is this? In this talk, I'll take you through a personal experience with J2ME development: The Good: One of the largest platforms supported on mobile. The Bad: Great Specification, Poor Implementation. Any port can be insecure. The insecurity does not arise from the port number but rather the hacking knowledge that's in the public domain regarding the application running on a specific port. I think there-in lies the true answer to your question. You can put an application on any port you wish but once someone figures out what you're running on that port, then they can look for exploits for the application. For web servers just follow the instructions on how to secure (too much to detail them here). Tomcat by default runs on 8080. You can secure tomcat and still run it from 8080. However general practice it to further secure it with Apache. Apache adds a few other benefits like caching. The solution deployed in Liberia and Dertu in North Eastern Kenya, allows communities to use excess power generated from a basestation to power their homes. The solution has been trialed in the Dertu Millennium Village, a remote settlement in north- eastern Kenya. There, one site generated about 4,000kWh in excess energy a year, theoretically the amount of energy needed to generate power to support mobile phone charging stations, illuminate street lights and supply power to community buildings such as clinics and schools in a small village. I am locked in a sort of argument with another techie... Said techie says that, for an internet facing web server, using a non-standard port, e.g. 8080 is safer than using port 80. But I just don't get it. So, specifically for Apache running on RHEL, how safer is a non standard port compared to the default port?

Hello skunks, Here is my proposal on the issues articulated elsewhere in this forum, and it is basically a statement as well as a test of wills. Basically, something simple and straightforward. 1: We hook up a box with an online instance, then sms numbers then routing (using ushahidi) 2: We then do a one day / week campaign via social media for anyone and everyone to send a text to those numbers. Hi guys, I am running webalizer and squid on Win32. My webalizer reports show user IP addresses as hostnames where they ought to show websites visited. For instance, top sites shows LAN IPs under 'hostname'. It seems to be working in reverse for me, as though configured to analyze web server logs, rather than proxy logs. What could be wrong? Me.

February 9, 2011 *“There has not been any legislation so far to bar any Commissioner from performing his or her former functions and hence there must be a clear distinction between what the law is and what the law ought to be.”* There is no law in the country that bars members to the Judicial Service Commission from actively engaging in legal practice. Mr. Justice Muga Apondi so ruled in a court matter where Mr. Ahmed Nasir Abdulahi was representing the petitioner in a winding up suit involving Kenya Data Networks Limited. His Excellency President Kibaki had appointed among others Mr. Ahmed Nassir Abdulahi and Mrs. Florence Muoti Mwangangi to serve on the Judicial Service Commission through a special issue of the Kenya Gazette No. 16956 published on December 31, 2010. The petitioner in the winding up cause had engaged the services of the firm Ahmed Nassir, Abdikadir & Co. Advocates, where Mr. Ahmed Nassir serves as a partner, before his appointment to the Judicial Service Commission. The respondent Kenya Data Networks Limited was represented by Mr. Philip Murgor. Mr. Philip Murgor argued that the appointment of Mr. Ahmed Nassir to the Judicial Service Commission barred him from actively engaging in legal practice because potentialy conflict of interest would arise. He conceded the fact that the Law Society of Kenya held elections to select its representatives and that all the members were free to avail themselves as candidates. He also conceded that the parliamentary committee on Justice and Legal Affairs had tabled before Parliament the report on the approval of nominees of the Judicial Service commission. The report was considered on December 22, 2010 and was subsequently adopted by Parliament. However, Mr. Murgor told the High Court that the report set out the members of the committee and among the members was Mr. Abdikadir Ahmed, a consultant in the firm representing the petitioner in the matter. Mr. Murgor also referred the High Court to a section of the report which recommended that Parliament should consider formulating legislation to address the possibility of conflict of interest of an advocate who was in active legal practice and serving as a member of the Judicial Service Commission. According to Mr. Murgor when the two advocates, Mr. Ahmed Nassir Abdulahi and Mrs. Florence Muoti Mwangangi were appointed by the President it was based on the conditions of approval. He was of the view that the mere possibility or appearance of influence had to be considered by the court. In his submissions, Mr. Sagana representing Mr. Ahmed Nassir, expressed uncertainty on whether Mr. Murgor was seeking the Court for Mr. Ahmed Nassir to cease being a partner in the law firm Ahmed Nassir, Abdikadir & Co. Advocates. Mr. Sagana pointed out that the Judicial Service Commission was tasked with setting out the requirements for its members while advocates adhered to given conditions of practice. According to Mr. Sagana there was no Constitutional provision which precluded Mr. Ahmed Nassir from actively practicing law. On the nomination of Mr. Ahmed Nassir, although Parliament had conceded that there was need for legislation to address the any potential conflict of interest; Mr. Sagana was of the view, that at the time of nomination Parliament did not impose any conditions for advocates who were in active legal practice and who were interested in serving in the Judicial Service Commission. Mr. Sagana wondered whether the argument raised by Mr. Murgor could be stretched to the Attorney General, who was also a member of the Judicial Service Commission. He concluded by stating that the issues raised were meant to delay the hearing of the winding up suit. The High Court presided by Mr. Justice Muga Apondi considered the opposing submissions by the two advocates and admitted that it had received two letters from both advocates on record and decided not to consider the correspondence sent to the court. The court emphasized that that position was deliberately taken and was meant to shield the court from any influence by extraneous matters. Mr. Justice Muga Apondi noted that historically the membership of Judicial Service Commission was restricted but, after a lot of agitation and enhancement of the democratic space in the country, the Commission had been expanded under the new Constitution to incorporate principles of transparency and accountability in the formation of its membership. The current Constitution requires representation to the Judicial Service Commission to include members from the Law Society of Kenya, the Civil Society and representatives from various echelons of the judiciary to reflect these principles. In his ruling Justice Muga Apondi stated the court was not privy to any complaints relating or directed at any of the new Commissioners who had already take oath of office. The High Court highlighted that hitherto there was no legislation to bar any Commissioner from performing his or her former functions. Further there was no law barring any Commissioner from engaging in legal practice before appointment to the Judicial Service Commission. On the Report of the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs on the Approval of Nominees to the Judicial Service Commission which made certain recommendations referred to by Mr. Murgor, the High Court held that those recommendations did not form part of the Laws of Kenya. And everybody is like "finally, some proof, some bravery, some justice" And 2 weeks later, the President visits the named Politician's home area, practically holding hands and saying "they/he should be forgiven" or something to that effect.. This completely undermined the work done by revolutionaries like Lumumba, and it goes to show that the whole Judiciary system is an Ant, struggling under the Elite's thumbs. And you know what? Follow some low profile cases and compare with "high profile" cases brought to court.. You will be surprised to hear that court systems for Criminal offenses are not the same... There are some courts where you are not expected to say "not guilty" and your lawyer is just a prop. If you say "not guilty" you are thrown in remand until the day your "hardheadedness" accepts a guilty plea. Then we have the high profile ones, the ones that appear on TV charging "high profile" cases. These ones follow the right sequence as we see on American law series. And the accused is usually "innocent until proven guilty" and the lawyer actually presents his clients case,, and many usually get out on "lack of enough proof or evidence". So that is the short summary of our Judicial System. And everybody is like "finally, some proof, some bravery, some justice" And 2 weeks later, the President visits the named Politician's home area, practically holding hands and saying "they/he should be forgiven" or something to that effect.. This completely undermined the work done by revolutionaries like Lumumba, and it goes to show that the whole Judiciary system is an Ant, struggling under the Elite's thumbs. And you know what? Follow some low profile cases and compare with "high profile" cases brought to court.. You will be surprised to hear that court systems for Criminal offenses are not the same... There are some courts where you are not expected to say "not guilty" and your lawyer is just a prop. If you say "not guilty" you are thrown in remand until the day your "hardheadedness" accepts a guilty plea. Then we have the high profile ones, the ones that appear on TV charging "high profile" cases. These ones follow the right sequence as we see on American law series. And the accused is usually "innocent until proven guilty" and the lawyer actually presents his clients case,, and many usually get out on "lack of enough proof or evidence". So that is the short summary of our Judicial System. My inc.conf file contains the following lines: server.document-root = "c:/squid/reports/" alias.url = ( "/usage/" => "c:/squid/bandwidthd/htdocs/" ) mod_alias.dll was already enabled by default. My document-root has no index document, but directory listing is enabled, and the listing shows two subdirs of the document root, which are actual subdirectories of the document root on the FS. I am expecting to see in addition to the subdirs, my virtual directory named 'usage' in the listing, but it is not present. typing http://localhost/usage give a 404 message. Running LightTPD.exe -t -f conf/lighttpd-inc.conf prints "Syntax OK". I'm just wondering what extra thing I am supposed to do and would therefore appreciate your feedback. Me

HI All, Am having an issue of joining to windows server 2008 to the domain and to make things even worse is that they are in different locations of town (Nairobi town and the other in industrial area). Can be able to ping and even read the masters DNS zone files but when it comes to joining the domain, it gives me a "network path not found error" and this is after it asking me for the credentials to join the machine to the domain. hellos, i need your advise on this....... i had gone to setup mails on clients who have their web mailbox hosted by jambo telcom. i configured the clients on outlook to view and send their emails.however the mails are downloaded to the machines when using outlook and cannot send emails using outlook. the error message they get is ''*error response 421 4.7.0 smtp.jambo.co.ke, too many connections from 41.212.12.184' **incoming mail server:mail.charlestonfreight.co.ke* *outgoing mail server:smtp.jambo.co.ke* when i ping the addressess, im able to get a response. When using the web browser mail.charlestonfreight.co.ke, they are able to send and receive mails... Incoming and outgoing ports are 110 and 25 respectively... Im not able to contact either zuku or jambo techicians to assist.Zuku are the one providing internet services. Hi skunks. I have this nagging question that has just refused to go away. What options does one have for having money in their paypal account transferred to their local bank? A plus is that you tie your local credit/debit card to Paypal for verification. I have considered opening a US based bank account such that paypal sends money to that account and do a wire transfer from that account to the local bank account.However, I am stumped as to how to go about this, since there is some post 9/11 laws & regulations that limit/restrict bank accounts for no residents. Hello fellow skunks!!! I have joined an Ubuntu work station to Active Directory using likewise-open. Problem is, when the PC is switched off after some time, a local user not from the domain has to login and log out to allow domain users to login. If this is not done, no domain user can be authenticated. I am guessing it's because the likewise service only starts on login and on login means the local user has to login then log out. I have often discovered Firefox eating a *gigabyte* of memory after a few hours at work, which is just unreasonable. I have found Opera and Google are much lighter on resources over a day in the office. 2: Looks I know there is beauty on the inside, but why not have it outside too? When it comes to your browser, you don't need to compromise with attractiveness. Firefox has been leapfrogged by everyone when it comes to looking great - even the dreaded *Internet Explorer*<http://internet-explorer-8.en.softonic.com/>is looking better these days. 3: Out-dated features Have you seen the downloader in Chrome? Firefox will just seem inadequate once you have. Firefox extensions? You have to restart the browser to install. Those are just two of the Mozilla browser's out-of-date features. Try Opera if you want to see a truly modern feature set. What's more, the Firefox interface takes up more room than is necessary - changing browser will give you more browsing real estate to play with. 4: Stability Firefox crashes every day for me. I discovered that with Chrome, each tab is a separate process and so you can isolate and kill the problem without losing all of your open tabs. That's much better, and minimizes your chances of losing work. 5: Familiarity isn't good A fact of computing is rapid change - don't let comfortable familiarity keep you from moving with the times or you may find yourself too far behind to catch up. Just because a feature works differently doesn't mean it doesn't work at all! Familiarity is what keeps *IE 6* and *7* in the browser charts. Has anyone who is currently using Zuku as their isp ever managed to resolve a problem they have had? If so, I gladly welcome instructions on how to: 1. Actually get through to their customer care (phone is on automated hold for > 15 to 20 mins so you just give up). 2. Get them to understand the problem (I'm on the "Triple Play" deal 8Mbps but the link is behaving like a 512k and no TV for a week). 3. Get a straight answer from them (When I do get through all I get is vague answers and no real support, like they don't have a clue). If they don't know what my problem is, why don't they just say so? They have already sent one team to my house to "fix" the problem and that team came found nothing wrong with the equipment and left. Now they want to send another team. Anyone got any advice other than "Jump ship"? When Zuku works, it works well, but you have a problem and you are in hell.
