This is quite sad for Linux usability, while Fedora is taking the flux for being the first major Distro to roll out Gnome 3 , hence taking most of the initial backlash, F15 has also shipped again with a major NetworkManager bug that leaves most users unable to connect to any network. Sadly, you need to search the internet to know how to fix the bug. Even more sadly, many users may not be techy enough to know how to fix such bugs. Even more sadly is the fact that Fedora 13 shipped with exactly the same issue. Starting 2009, Kenya has been slowly emerging as a hotbed of innovation and differentiated thinking in matters technology. Numerous accolades and awards later, are we resting on our laurels? I have in the past couple of months had the opportunity to interact on a day to day basis with many developers - from solo fliers to organized teams based in Nairobi. While it is a given that the town is awash with brilliant ideas, I think we need to increase the rate at which these ideas get into the market. The ideas and concepts need to be given the opportunity to stand on their own and scale, or fail and fail fast, to allow for the crucial pivot or a trip back to the drawing board. While the current growth in co-shared spaces has been a shot in the arm for a hither to ailing developer ecosystem, it may also create a cocoon of comfort that sees what I call continuous development in the pursuit of perfection.It seems that we may be massaging and coercing many ideas to make business sense while in the real-world with brutal honesty some models are not viable for the current market and may best be shelved, hibernating as the market develops into one that will be conducive for their growth. We need to find a way to deliver the honest truth for the many ideas that are out there. Maybe culturally we are a polite people or more appropriately we are afraid of expressing honest opinion to colleagues operating in the same space. Something very strange happened today. I have an Orange Internet everywhere 3G+ modem. The highest download speed that I have ever got in the corner of the house that has got the best reception is around 400kbps to 600Kbps till today. It has been raining heavily tonight and there has been a lot of lightning . My download speeds has shot up to 1.17 Mbps to 1.4Mbps for the last hour thats its been raining. Someone please help me understand this phenomenon .Did the rain make my broadband work faster ? or did all my neighbours who share the same cell tower with me all go to bed? Or have orange just got better overnight in the space that it started raining .

Hey guys, I think there must be some sort of failed upgrade from this airtell guys. As from yesterday, it has been hell for me.i couldnt make any calls whatsoever and there network was down. I have realized that yesterday,from where the network strength bars on my right hand side of the blackberry, it was all 3g and the bars were only 2 and just a few minutes gone its back to gsm and full bars 5 in number! Could this be an issue of failed upgrade or what?

This is a follow up to a post about Developers and VCs in kenya Allow me to advance the following theory about developers who I believe will make breakthrough innovations and those who will keep waiting for VCs to knock on their doors or the govt to advance them funding. I believe the difference between the 2 is USERS. I had a conversation with a developer one day who is thinking about doing his own thing. In the absence of generous angel investors My advice was the following 1. Draw up the concept of whatever it is you want to do 2. Implement the solution starting off in a very small way. A basic app that performs the basic functions intended will do 3. Get the intended market using the software. Get some beta testers who are in the real world. Even if they are not paying for the application. 4. Use feedback from the beta testers to improve the product. 5. When you have refined it, you can now scale up and get people paying for a working solution that already has many evangelists. I dont believe technology adoption or even established competition is the barrier to succesful software development. People refuse to use technology for many reasons and most are psychological. But once you get people using the applications, then you can build up a user base based on referrals or you could even advertise at that point. With a growing user base that is loyal, you will get VCs not just knocking on your door but offering you money to scale up the product. In the KE tech world and Silicon Valley--An amatuer view

Just been catching up on a thread on the other list, and something caught my attention. The subject line is to do with Silicon Valley. The more I look at the overall picture of the approach towards what ICT needs and can be done, the more I'm convinced that generally ( *not all* ) many kenyans are far more interested in mastering to become *brokers* that actually doing something. It seems becoming a broker is a very easy thing. I've read various articles and excuses as to why VCs, angle investors and others--mostly external-- should provide financing for tech projects etc. Yet, so far I've not seen any info about tech projects that has been funded by such. What I even fail to understand is that the impression of someone funding you to write some program, yet our local banks quite easily provide unsecured loans to a certain level. And taking software developement, the investment costs are quite low compared to generally most business that have to retain stock/asset values. *Something strange is being groomed in our tech culture for the last few years, and it seems it maybe an easier way for brokers to earn incomes or perks with a twist.* Now please someone tell me if the chinese back street programmers/developers are preparing a well written document to be presented to some VC, angel or Silicon Valley type operation so that they can get funding to "survive" while doing some development? I'm sure I saw a picture of a QUAD SIM phone somewhere.......... Is it just me who sees it like this, or do I have the wrong impressions? Corrections welcome...

Airtel SMS Service sux!

Of late, with Airtel, either 1. my sms does not get delivered to the recipient, OR 2. if it gets delivered, I do not get the delivery report My phone is configured to receive the delivery reports. I seem to get delivery reports 1% of the time. 99% I do not. When I check the status of the messages in the "Reports" folder, almost all are marked as "Pending". I believe there are engineers from Airtel reading this. The affected number is the one in my signature text below. Anyone else seeing the same symptoms and willing to help me out?? It's very important for me to get the two issues resolved, because I have resorted to calling the recipient, as a followup just to confirm they received my text, which is an extra expense (unless Airtel has it this way by design!). Calling Airtel Customer Care is even more irritating, as the chaps there do not appear competent enough to address any problems. They take you round, you get pissed off, then they say they'll forward your problem to "IT" and you should be called after 48hrs. Unfortunately, that marks the end of any communication from Airtel, as no one from their side ever gets to follow up on the problem you reported. I am not subscribed to any of their funny services apart from the "Preferred Numbers" and my line is a corporate line. Question : A string as a bool value

- I'm working on setting up an http interface and one requirement that am working with was to take a string and use it's status as a bool. The result of the string I then run the bool in a conditional if/else block, and it works fine when true but is not triggered when false. Even tried with a null, same result. Anyone been down this road and willing to share some info? I believe this question is not language dependent. -File stream: Not sure whether the stream referred to in programming is in binary format? E.g. in the comms world, streams are modulated binaries in a digital signal i.e the payload binaries are carried by a modulated carrier. Anyone care to discuss the file streams in programs. Location on mobile can be tapped into via different ways; CellId, GPS, Agps and lastly user generated. For you to use mobile services, your mobile phone must communicate with a mast and these masts have known locations. The mast with which your mobile communicates changes as you move and by triangulating data from these interactions we can determine your location. GPS stands for global positioning system and this uses a series of satellites to derive location information. User generated location is subjective entry of one's location onto a system. There are many services that can be taken to the next level once location information is appended. Take directory services for example, and assume you were looking for a Chinese restaurant. With your location plugged into the service, you will receive particulars of restaurants that are close by, as it makes no sense to get a listing of a restaurant in Kisumu, yet you are in Nairobi. This is important for us the Open Source/ open standards people who believe that open systems and interoperability is a life style and is the future of communication. I believe we have done well... 1. Terrestrial and marine fiber opening the opportunity for broadband and VOIP 2. Cloud business with Telcos now looking at opportunities in hosted services 3. IP CENTREX, the next big buzzword in Kenya for the next one year or so [Voice as a Service] 4. Technocrats getting ready for *Internet Protocol version 6* *5. Asterisk coming of age and corporates starting to think outside the box. The solution works and has the right support. This means opportunities for developers to now improve on Unified communication. what more can we do? Apps for asterisk like what Android has done. PRESS RELEASE Tuesday, May 24, 2011: Preparing for UN conference in Nairobi, consultations in Geneva, Switzerland identify mobile Internet as key Internet governance issue. 18 – 19 May, Geneva, Switzerland, Alice Munyua, Chair of the Kenya Internet Governance (IG) Steering Committee chaired the second preparatory consultations of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF). The consultations finalized the programme and agenda of the 6th UN-IGF, which will be held in Nairobi, 27 – 30 September 2011. Participants from around the world met in Geneva with the aim of maximizing the opportunity for the IGF to enable open and inclusive dialogue, and to create opportunities to share good practices and experiences. The main theme for the 2011 IGF is “The Internet as a catalyst for change: access, development, freedoms and innovation”. The UN IGF is a unique event in the United Nations calendar and the IGF programme is developed through an open, multi-stakeholder process that began earlier this year and is overseen by a "Multi-stakeholder Advisory Group" of experts appointed by the UN Secretary General to advise him on convening the Forum. Kenya will host the 2011 sixth IGF and has chaired the consultation process as well. Those present in Geneva agreed the key emerging issue for the Nairobi meeting will be extensive dialogue and discussion about the mobile internet, technology, and its contribution to development. The main question addressed will be "Is governance for the mobile internet different from wired internet and how should Internet policy and regulations be developed and applied for both?”. The 2011 IGF will improve understanding of the policy and governance choices and opportunities in the mobile Internet space that will foster innovation, skills building, entrepreneurship and maximizing the use of the Internet for socio-economic, cultural and political development. With more than 4 million Kenyans accessing internet through their mobile phones, this year's IGF will provide an important forum for discussion and consideration of these issues and how they affect people in developing regions of the world, while also relating them to global governance of the internet. Over the four days of the IGF in Nairobi there will be main sessions discussing issues such as broadband and mobile access, the resources critical to the stable and secure operation of the internet, cybersecurity, privacy and internet rights, and youth and entrepreneurship. In addition, over 90 workshops and side events will be held covering a broad range of internet policy and technology issues, with each event organized by a global, multi-stakeholder team of experts. During the consultations, the Secretary of the Kenya IG steering committee, Michael Katundu of the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) introduced the activities Kenya is taking to prepare for the UN-IGF and also launched the host country website (www.igf.or.ke) The Kenya IG steering committee also showcased the country's development in the ICT sector through various presentations as well as a video interview with the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of information and Communication, Dr. Bitange Ndemo, who used the opportunity to welcome all IGF delegates on behalf of the Government of Kenya. I'm looking for a programmer who can achieve the following requirements. We have a group of companies which operate under 5 different business names. Each of these companies maintains its books of accounts separately in Quickbooks pro 2003 UK edition. The companies get various reports at the end of accounting period viz Profit and loss a/c, Balance sheet, Cashflow forecast among a few others. However, Quickbooks give these reports separately for each company. The directors would like to be getting consolidated reports for all companies. eg for a profit and loss a/c report, instead of five different reports the application to be developed should be able to connect to all the five databases and give one report. Building a business from mobile applications.there's a method to the madness - http://bit.ly/m1YYEB Reading the success stories of mobile application developers in other markets raking in the millions from what would seemingly be a "why couldn't I think of that idea" scenario, is enough to make any local developer go green with envy and even add a sprinkling of self doubt. The reality is that there is a method to the madness in as much as the success of the applications is obvious after the fact. I have said to people many times before that ideas are not mutually exclusive and execution is what matters. Move too early or too late and you lose out. Branding is the crucial start, if your thinking of building a business from mobile applications. What you call your application will be key to its discoverability and you have to ensure that it will connect with your target users. You should also do a check on the name to see if there is a possibility of future conflict with other businesses. You don't want court cases once your app or service goes viral and starts minting.

I am however a cautious person and I do not want to expose inappropriate lyrics to the young ones. Hi Skunk(ette)s, Below are the speakers for the upcoming BitMagic: Michael Pedersen MpesaPi. Open source API for Mpesa commercial accounts. Abstract: If you want to integrate Mpesa with your system (i.e. e-commerce) today, you have to sign up with one of the payment-aggregators, and pay all the way up to 3.5% of the transaction in fees. If you only need Mpesa integration and not the full "aggregating", it is very limited what extra service you are receiving for those 3.5% - you are already paying Safaricom for the transaction, that should be enough. Using MpesaPI, it is possible for any developer to integrate directly with Safaricom, and thereby removing the need to utilize a "middleman" (aggregator), without having to spend time on developing infrastructure/API himself, hereby greatly reducing the cost of creating online commerce solutions in Kenya.
