PHP-Java Bridge

Hi guys, Trying to implement PHP-Java Bridge to implement utilize Birt reporting tools. I successfully installed and can run ApacheTomcat on Ubuntu Linux. (on port 8080). However, when I try to run the JavaBridge ( http://localhost:8080/JavaBridge) I keep getting a series of exceptions, starting with the servlet: (javax.servlet.ServletException: php.java.bridge.http.FCGIConnectException: Could not connect to server) The other alternative is to copy the JavaBridge directory to the webserver root (http://localhost/JavaBridge) That runs ok but with a lot of limitations). Hi good people... So i have been with a hosting company ... and their are such a bluff they say the package is Unlimited everything then they tell you ... you can only send 200 Emails per Hour and a total of 2000 emails daily... The mailbox shows a limit of 500MB but at 176MB senders get a mailbox is full delivery failure message. The time on the server is also poorly synchronized and sometimes emails coming in will honor the full time difference between sender and recipient before they arrive. Kindly recommend any solutions that you feel are the best in the market. I have also been having some very bad experience with Orange (Livebox) for the last couple of weeks. The speed has become extremely slow and I have to keep switching the box on and off after every 5 minutes...I am now looking for an alternative...I am in the CBD...East side of Tom Mboya street (where real hustlers reside). Anyway...One Wariah from Eastleigh told me that there are some providers there with very fast and very cheap WiMax solutions and that these "providers" have covered most of Nairobi...however he could not give me any names of any of these providers...so I guess they might be illegal, but for now I am willing to take anything...Can someone on the list give me some names? So day 1 of Pivot 25 is over, and everyone has made their pitch. Who would be your pick for the investor money? Mine would be Eatout Kenya and Usahibu. Eatout because they were the only company with solid proof of product straight from the market's mouth(though I thought them revealing their revenue was a bad move). Determination is the principal factor for success in my opinion, andI've long held the belief that Mikul Shah is just the most determined techie in Kenya. If there is an opportunity for a conference, competition, presentation, grant, VC pitch, he's always there, and I mean ALWAYS THERE. All the best to him as he forges ahead. Usahibu because it solved a real need, and out of the 'prototype' apps, I thought his was closest to a turning point. He also stood up well to the questions posed by the harsh panel of judges. What did you think of the event and applicants?

Two major Internet players to hit the headlines on the today with quasi adverse mentions. In todays Business Daily KDN has been hit by mass exodus of talent and will be replaced by mainly South Africans (yes South Africans) http://bit.ly/mPpT8D and Access Kenya is merging it's businesses and the underlying numbers look scarcely. http://bit.ly/irHphP AK lost an amazing KES. 134m in FOREX loses ONLY and also saw their revenues decreased by KES. 300m from 2billion to 1.7billion ouch. In the intervening year AK has not made notable investment in infrastructure or marketing so the revenue is bound to decline even further. I also think the Safaricom assault on their corporate business and Airtel heading that way ... shareholders have a right to be very concerned. Only time will tell how these companies would do but even with impending changes at KDN would we prefer a better managed company by foreigners or we really don't care? As far as AK is concerned ... Have a few mins to spare, so will jot down my thoughts. IMHO and from my economic rants you should know by now that its economics first then innovation later. As proved in the Pivot25 event, there can never will be any place for brilliant creative minds, the judges or panel also shared their views on economic impact and bottomline. So if you are those creative people, unfortunately your mind capacities are not for developing countries. As Mr Paul of KICTB said, "ask you mama for the money if you have to" and that govt does not fund but create the environment ( yeah right... ). Such is the situation in Africa and if you want to succeed, develop your apps from this perspective. Its called *Software as a Service and NOT Software as a solution*. Software as a Service ( SaaS ) : Explains why MedAfrica took the overall prize because the business community sees only the bottom line = viability and profitability = $$$. The VC dream is also based on the same. Many services such as CPanel, CMS systems etc are based on this concept where they fulfill needs of end users. Research into the SaaS scenario and you will find the necessary apps that need building. I can share much more if needed but keeping it simple here. Best of luck and you need to up the competition to established vendors of SaaS. It's not difficult and most of the frameworks have the building blocks to make your life much easier. Hi techies, Google has launched a new service called 'Me on the web' that assists you to control your privacy on Google search. So while googling myself, I came across this link http://lists.my.co.ke/pipermail/skunkworks/attachments/20100519/714ba288/at… exposes my email address to email harvesters for spamming. So I'm now wondering whether there is a way that pipermail [isn't that what you call this web app that runs the list?] could be tweaked to reformat email addresses, or obscure part of the address. I know you're probably wondering why I don't adjust 'Me on the Web' settings on my Google dashboard. I think it would also be good if the mod(s) did something from the list's end. Prevention is stil better than cure, I guess. Or is it not? Me.

IS TECHNICAL CONSULTANCY FREE?

Hi Skunks, Something has been bothering me for some time now on this list. I know many skunks have set up IT businesses and consultancy in areas such as web-design, networks, VOIP, software development, support, FOSS implementation and maintenance etc. Lawyers, doctors, civil engineers, realtors, quantity surveyors and plumbers have also registered their businesses. The one major difference between the techies and the later group is that we tend to offer our knowledge, skills and consultancy for free on public forums such as Skunkworks. There is a fine thick line between offering a fellow techie help when stuck and streaming really premium information to non-techies and thus denying professionals their right earning. Those of you who have engaged lawyers, realtors and plumbers recently can attest that nothing is free from the outset. While you may have a day job, there are fellow techies who hassle with start-ups and can offer these services at a fee. I believe the better approach is to refer such questions to IT companies we know who offer the service/product in question. Come on guys, the techies need to pay bills, tax and put food on the table. I've got lawyer friends who cannot copy-paste that company incorporation document for free claiming LSK does not allow them to offer free service (my foot). On the other hand, techies would helpfully volunteer information on how to google, download and customise IT Policy without asking for a cent. Very soon, IT lawyers (they exist, by the way) will start "developing" IT Policy at a fee as IT professionals watch. I think we are our worst enemies and we invite quarks with money to easily set up and run IT businesses at our expense. In the end it helps no one. Not the industry and its growth in competence, professionalism and respect. Not the people we think we are helping and not ourselves. And we ask why we are treated with disdain in office. Look at the mirror. Just my opinion. Don't lynch me. Maybe it's just me but am I so off the rail?

Safaricom Internet speeds

As seen on the image attached I tested the Safaricom connection to see whether I was getting value for money. Subscribed to the 2/- offer I was getting max speeds of upto 101 KB/s using a download accelerator (orbit) and managed to download upto 150 MBs in 25 minutes at a cost of 50/- during the entire session. That is i'm paying at least 3/- per MB. If had purchased the Safaricom bundles I would have spent at least 500/- to get the 200 MB bundle. Skunks I have been watching the trends of the Kenya shilling and its now beginning to worry me now. As of today its at 88 shillings ( which means you will buy it at 90 shillings at the forex bureau) and not relenting in the trend. What alarmed me most was when a forex dealer gave me a heads up that its likely to hit the 100 mark in a few weeks. Is there a problem in the economy that we are not aware of. I was reading a global report indicating that it is one of the worst performing currencies to the dollar this year. How does that affect IT professionals - from cost of bandwidth, to computer equipment to ipads, cellphones, routers name it it will affect us at some point. Any economists in this forum ?

In a final contribution to this list as I'm finding it difficult to spare time, I want to leave some thoughts for your reading. When you look at each and every sector, 99% is based on imports whether in raw materials or machinery or even code systems. While this suits 99% of everyone out there who basically is trying to survive to make it, when we ourselves try to get down to the atom level what we discover is the remains of very bad and failed policies. There is no room for going against a defective planning and faulty system, and most who try and make it to the atom level will find themselves completely isolated and out of place. History repeats itself again, and we still do not learn but gladly jump into the global torrents that we have no control over. Ask any investor in Dubai what happened over the last global meltdown, and they will not have anything good to say. Ask yourself why has there never been a strong policy to produce, manufacture and research at the core levels but there has been a strong drive to put up concrete structures to create other environments? Ask yourself why no accountant, doctor nor lawyer has greatly impacted the atom levels of the core in any country? The local representatives of developing economies have had a game plan for many years. They never want any specialized knowledge to thrive in their environments. For many years, they have controlled how the demand and supply has existed. They have written the economy to match and control of how its citizens think and act. They want microfinaces to succeed but will not touch the mainstream banks on borrowing rates where borrowing hardly meets any profitability expectations. There can never be a supply of bright creative minds at the lowest levels of creations because this will upset the balance of supply/demand from external resources. This, listers, is the doom of developing countries. Only when you go down to the lowest iota of the atom is when you realise what is going on. So the castration of the creative brains start with these words " why re-invent a wheel? " and has been successfully entrenched into the system through various means. The wheels are easily at an an email, download, fax or bank transfer distance. The pressure and urge to succeed quickly and without much effort further justifies the means. No one can blame you or me for thinking such things as the system demands it, but just look at why it is not necessary to re-invent the wheel? For yourself or for others? Success to all those who are still tinkering with the atoms and structure of technology out there and to everyone also making a living out of other wheels. No one can help it, its the system. Hi, anyone know how to create a fallback internet connection? I have two internet connections, Zuku broadband (*Main*) and Safaricom broadband (*Alternate*), I usually connect my Safaricom broadband to the router and disconect the Zuku one when Zuku goes down since its my main connection problem is: users have to change their Gateway when I do this by disconnecting their connections and reconnecting them again. I have been toying with the idea of setting up a server using smoothwall so that when I need to make this change all I do is change the gateway on the server and the clients will not have to mess/change their internet connection settings. Any assistance will be highly appreciated. Hi guys, Has anyone noticed that their data bundles on Airtel have been disappearing really fast? I topped up with 25 MB at lunch time today and by 8pm it was gone. Hi Skunks, I'm trying to run a php file on LightTPD. Running lighttpd.exe -p gives the output captured in the attached file. A syntax check shows that syntax is OK. However, trying to load a .php file from my webserver gives the following output in debug mode: mod_cgi.c.1034: aborted The browser gives an error 500 page. HTML files are loading successfully though. What could be the problem? The LightTPD folder is in my drive C's root and the version number is 1.4.26 for Win32. Thanking you in advance, Me.

Hi, Am not sure if am late on this one. This feature is not only specific to Cisco, actually most IP phones will have two ethernet ports, one to the network and one to the PC. No special cable is required, your ussual cat-5/6 cable will work fine here, you need a patch cord from phone to PC. Also you need an IP Telephony system as your back-end to work with the IP Phone. I have not worked with this technology on any analog system, am not sure how it would work out but would be interested to see that set-up. Yes, Gentlemen & Ladies. One of the interesting things that I learnt from the kictanet thread is that the govt is circled with brokers waiting as vultures to pounce on any govt projects. The same way that area chief's ( locals ) made colonialism successful through selling out freedom fighters and their locations, these brokers/vendors don't give a damn about the long terms effects on the economy. For them its about being in a position to supply a vendor product that meets the specs of the project and become successful enterprenuers. The rest of kenyans in the dev sector can go and jump off a bridge, for all they care. So now it is War! ( In a tech sense, not literally ) :-) Now, we have a great chance to do something about this and such times make me regret I wish I had enough time to have completed my programming study so as to be able to approach any commercial projects. However, all is not lost and I share this idea with you. Whether you are on open source or even proprietory, good at programming and creating systems as those required in the e-Health project, no matter what platform used and as long as the* core engine is done locally* whether to run on IBM servers etc, we are on the first steps towards building on e-Govt projects and to prove that all the bulloks of shoody contractors is just talk to avoid local development. Do you mean all the innovators at iHub ( upto 3000 of them ) are shoddy?! iHub has an army of talent, and so do other software developer companies. Is it possible to treat this e-Health system as a joint project? I saw the vendor participation fees as $4500, pretty steep for most local dev companies so am thinking of ways of how we can raise this amount so that the joint venture can present its local version of the system with all the bells and whistles. Do we stand a chance and take back what is ours and give you the chance to be the next high tech group from KE? If anyone has the specs of the e-Health proposal or vision that has been laid out under govt/foreign, it would help to know. What we know for sure is that such a system should have SMS involved somewhere, web portals, security access and mobility. Me thots, please give you kind attention to this thread and see how you can help/make it happen. :-)

This has been achieved through private-public partnerships with Google, Safaricom and other partners. Through a WorldBank sponsorship programme, court records are now digitized. The digitization process employs 200 young Kenyans in a permanent basis and has digitised 35 million records. In addition, the WorldBank donated laptops that has been given to judges. Other initiatives by the judiciary include use of Teleconferencing in the court sittings and judgments. Through a partnership with Safaricom, Judges can now have court sessions between Nairobi and Mombasa law courts without physically being present. Something Wrong With These 3 Organizations

Dear Skunks, A friend of mine who just cleared campus received a job interview invitation from some organization calling itself Living Fund International ( www.livingfund.org) and she was required to do some prometrics tests before attending. So naturally she called me for advise, and I decided to research further as I have not heard of this organization, and I have been in the industry for many years. One of the testing centres is apparently www.escbon.com, which is supposed to be based in Kenya and they seem to charge some fees for the tests. What I find fishy is that these two domains seem to be owned by the same person (or compan) and I am starting to see this is some sort of fraud being perpetuated on unsuspecting job seekers. Anyone ever heard of or had experience with Escbon International ( www.escbon.com) or another name they used to go by Gaosco International ( www.gaosco.com) The thing is I was in Sudan for many years and there is no Living Fund International or Danish Fund International. And Lokichoggio is not longer used as a base by any organization. Anyway, let me continue watching Steve Jobs at WWDC. iOS 5 and OSX Lion were satisfactory improvements. iCloud was great, except for the iTunes integration. It was a big fail in that you can only download shared music, not stream it. The other products(Apple TV, iTunes Match etc) are not relevant to my situation.

Google and Facebook ads that do not work

Today I have been rather generous with my clickthroughs on ads. I clicked a total of THREE ads in one day! 2 Googleads and 1 Facebookad, the latest being a Facebook ad for ICT Talks. Big BUT though... none of the links worked! Is this a mistake on the ad servers behalf, or the advertiser themselves actually giving bogus links? It would seem like a thorough waste of money if advertisers were doing this!

Orange Livebox - Problems?

Hi guys, I have been using the orange livebox for over two years without any problems...but I now have to keep switching it on and off after 30 minutes so as to "regain" the connection...and the speeds have also become terrible... Is there any other skunk/skunkette of the aforementioned getting the same problem? I am using mine in the CBD... Timo.
