HOW TO STOP UNWANTED TRAFFIC ON MY PC

Guys, I have ubuntu 10.10 in my pc. Recently when I connected to internet (via my phone) i saw a LOT of traffic going out and also coming to my computer(i have a third party app to monitor the traffic). It starts instantly when i connected and i didn't open any application (not even updates). The worst thing is that this traffic is not monitored in some apps(i can say them trustworthy apps like google desktop gadgets). The most interesting thing is when i tried to identify the app doing this by stopping each processes in process monitor one by one. I saw that when i stopped pulseaudio, the traffic stopped slowly after a while. Now i usually stop it before connecting to the internet. But it causes problems with audio and video. I doubt this is a virus or a rootkit(oh god, dont be so). So i need help with this. Can anyone help me guys? (I am not an expert in linux but,kinda of a newbie.)

Actually, I am curious if there is any IDS out there that does a lot of VOIP profiling. I have configured the wireless proxy already and can connect to the internet thru the browser on handset desktop but am not sure how to break the authentication issue when going directly to the "market" (pressing the market icon directly) . The Ministry of Information and Communications, through the Kenya ICT Board is now accepting proposals for the Tandaa Digital Content Grant. The grant is offered to Kenyan citizens and companies registered in Kenya for the development of innovative web or mobile phone applications. Grants of up to $ 50,000 for companies and $ 10,000 for individuals and teams will be offered through the program. The objective of the grant is to stimulate ICT innovation and creativity while promoting economic growth in the sector. For many companies that develop web and mobile solutions, access to funding to grow their company is a huge challenge. By supporting entrepreneurs with the funds they need to successfully take their products to market, the grant hopes to grow the number of relevant and local web and mobile applications available to Kenyans. The Kenya ICT Board awarded fifteen grants in 2010 and hopes to award at least 30 grants in 2011. The grant is available to individuals and companies in any sector and the Kenya ICT Board encourages any individual or company with ideas for web or mobile applications to apply. *Category 1: Private sector innovation* The Tandaa Digital Content Grant is divided into two categories: Government Open Data and Private Sector Innovation. In the Private Sector category, the Kenya ICT Board will select the most innovative proposals that demonstrate long term business viability. Proposal in this category must respond to a demonstrated market need and have a positive impact on the community it seeks to serve. In 2010, the Kenya ICT Board awarded seven grants in this category including a diary farmer payment application and a social media marketing product. *Category 2: Government Data Applications* On July 8, the Government of Kenya made 290 datasets publicly available and accessible through an Open Data portal. Now, the Kenya ICT Board will support entrepreneurs to develop web and mobile applications that utilize the data to provide services or products for citizens. Eduweb, an online school portal that use data from the Ministry of Education to provide a service for parents selecting schools for their children, was among seven grants awarded in 2010. *Eligibility* Kenyan citizens above 18 are eligible to apply for the grant. Companies officially registered in Kenya are eligible to apply for the grant. *Matching grant for established companies* A new feature of the second round of the Tandaa Digital Content Grant offers established companies an opportunity to participate in the program. Companies founded at least 10 year ago with over 40 members of staff are invited to summit their proposals for a web or mobile application. The companies must match the grant in full. This categories allows otherwise profitable ICT companies to develop innovative projects within a short period of time. *Business Plan training* Another new feature of the Tandaa Digital Content Grant is a training component designed into the proposal process. Over 2,000 people participated in the first round of the Digital Content Grant. However, more than half of the applicants struggled with the business plan sections of the proposal. As such, the Kenya ICT Board will offer business plan training to the top 150 applicants. DStv today announced the launch of BoxOffice, a Video-on-Demand service for South Africa. This service gives subscribers the opportunity to rent the latest Hollywood blockbusters from the comfort of their home. The BoxOffice service will be rolled out in several phases. The first phase is today’s launch of a satellite-based value added offering to DStv Premium subscribers via their PVRs. The next phase of the BoxOffice roll-out will be an online offering, available to all South African broadband users by the end of this year. Like this one .... I have a corrupt Outlook PST file. It's not a large one - only 300MB. Outlook's Inbox Repair Tool (ScanPST.exe) runs over this file and repairs the found errors. However, Outlook still crashes when I either attempt to mount the file, or import data from it (import also mounts the file). Stellar Phoenix Outlook PST Repair OTOH is able to extract all the data from this file into another useable PST file. Fellow Skunks, I have been playing around with Google+ and noticed that the "Add location" thingy shows exactly where I am...i.e..."Moi Avenue, Nairobi"...For Skunksville's sake...how do they do that...???? I usually thought you can see the general Location if an IP (e.g. Nairobi or Kenya) but if they can see the street where I am, does that mean they know where I am right now...it's kinda scary... Case in point is the case of safaricon being brought down by Kenic. Now New York State’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is launching a similar contest of its own. A number of cities, including Washington, D.C., and San Francisco, have made their data publicly available. It makes sense: Apps that improve parking situations or make public transportation easier to navigate benefit the city without sucking its resources. But New York City, and now New York State, are some of the first governments to add a contest to the process in order to incentivize developers to make such apps. To be eligible for “MTA App Quest” and its $15,000 in cash prizes, the biggest requirement is that apps need to use at least one of the MTA’s data sets. The MTA first posted databases online for developer use in January 2010, and 40 or so apps have been created using the data. But many of these, like NYC Way [iTunes link], were entries in New York City’s BigApps contest, which borrowed several MTA databases. For its own contest, the MTA has released six new or updated data sets, including one that shows where platforms, elevators, turnstiles and station agent booths are located inside subway stations. Beyond that, the two contests are pretty similar, despite one being run by the city and the other by the state. The MTA has partnered with the same contest platform that NYC did, ChallengePost. In this case, ChallengePost is putting up the prize money for the contest. Usually, it collects money to run crowdsourcing contests for clients like the World Bank and Michelle Obama. Sorry to hijack from the Open Data thread, but I think this has morphed into a topic on it's own. The problem, in my opinion boils down to the following: 1. Dependence on vendor lead solutions - Yes, EMC/Cisco/VMware make a good combined and stable product but is it really the best placed product to run the platform you want? Is there necessary expertise for the same? People run for the vendor led solutions without enough expertise which means that consultants etc will run and maintain the system. Support contracts etc. End result? An unusually high cost for the service. 2. SP's have not figured out the business model... It's not only about storage space and VM's. You need to be able to provide a stable platform. Requires input from devs... 3. Hello, Is anyone familiar with data backups on hard-drives and the impact of time on data? Like how many years can one safely back up data on a HDD before one should worry about backing-up the same data again? /Does data loss exist over time? Like Flash drives and SSD's have a limited read, writes though many there is an upper limit. Anyway, assuming the back-up storage is never dropped or moved, is stored in a sealed water resistance case and is disconnected and out of use 90% of the time, would one still have access to the data over 5 / 10 / 15 / 20 years later? Thank you Sam Gatere for your insightfull responses, it is unfortunate that majority of us have resorted to complaining through lists or the media when systems go live, for instance, when opendata.go.ke was launched there are those who questioned whether the data is hosted outside the country and why that decision was taken, i am not sure whom to side with in so far as the issue is concerned because the arguments for and against could all be genuine, my only concern is even as the government embarks on such noble projects which are inline with Vision 2030, are there Frameworks (principles) that will ensure that there is more emphasis on the use of local networks for data interchange to minimise dependence on Foreign carriers which might translate to Capital flight? that there is adequate Capacity to host data (especially government data locally...i would be very uncomfortable to host government data outside our borders whether in a cloud or not :-) just hoping that is not the case, how do we promote our ccTLD, najivunia kuwa .ke? , the question is who should take part and what should be their input? the discussion contninues.. How accurate is safariCON internet billing? I have installed bit defender internet firewall that monitors all incoming and outgoing network traffic. After 1 hour of surfing bit defender tells me i have used 38Mb in total while SafariCON, tells me I have userd 116.77MB. How can this be?

I like the new interface that's being previewed using Labs however i've got a query for those of you on *+* are you able to create a signature and use images without them being on picasa? I always felt that was lacking on Gmail regular. figured now that it's on steroids it'd be better. Lemme know. -- ...and I shall shed my light over dark evil. I have never understood why the president cannot fly ie use a helicopter. It's WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY faster and more convenient for motorists, really. Other than that I love that the government is committed to availing data for all citizens and is involved in ICT infrastructure in our country. It's laudable!

Google+ opening invites shortly

Guys, Google+ is about to open the invites floodgates in a few minutes as denoted in an email below. I will try to invite as many skunkers as possible so respnd urgently as we do not know how long this invite window will be open. The email Hey Google+ folks! As I bet you've noticed, we are facing pretty incredible demand for Google+ invites. As Engineering Director of Google+, I wanted to take a moment to explain why we're growing the system slowly. First, we want to make sure our infrastructure scales so the service remains fast and reliable. Second, we want to ensure that bugs are fixed while there are still a relatively few people in the field trial. Things are going well with the systems right now so we feel comfortable enough to open up invites for a brief period. Our goal is to double the user base in the field trial. (Sorry, we're not giving details about how many folks are in the field trial yet). So, in a few minutes, we'll open up invites again. We continue to throttle invites, so please don't mass invite folks as it won't work. If you invite *a handful* of your most important friends and family you're much more likely to get these folks into our system. Thanks again for providing so much wonderful feedback!
