Im not sure about this job but most of the work there is technology driven, hence very practical. There's also tendency to throw in a baseline qualification. It should never stop you from applying and seeking an interview if you feel qualified. You just probably need to follow a different process:-) What you learn and what you do at work are really not the same. A lot of you know this. This is why startups are so much fun, you almost always get to do something you love. On the other hand, having 'papers' is a way of filtering that is every popular, sometimes it works. It's the system. Its all part of the journey. I however have to ask that you at some levels learn to separate knowledge from accredition. The interview process in most cases especially for technical jobs tends to focus more on whether you fit in a team and know what you are doing (or can do what you say you can) in that order. Other things come in but being able to actually do the work accounts for more than anything else. Unfortunately that means going through a long process. Its also easy to 'game' the system with papers which as you can imagine can be very frustrating to everyone. So to answer the question "Why can't the quality of the CS course be improved?" i'll dare say that regardless of its limitations, people who go an extra step to learn about the industry they want to be in tend to get 'jobs'; they work harder to get it since they tend to know what they want. And yes some luck is involved and it is not a fair world. Quality of Tech Support with Kenyan Telcos

Apologies in advance for cross-posting. I'm somehow very appalled at the level of technical support we get from our Telcos. What surprises me is the fact they they have some of the best brains in the market, yet they simply cannot get these brains to address the consumer problems. A simple problem can take you ages to get solved -- unless you go behind the scenes and contact these techies at a personal level. I've come to the point of thinking that either there is too much bureaucracy introduced between the people we talk to (the CSEs) and the engineers who work in the background or the escalation process simply isn't streamlined. The process of getting a solution from the engineers can take ages (to me, a week is ages!). Then again, the Customer-facing teams simply seem to be robots who don't want to try and reason out. Is thinking out of the box not acceptable for CSEs working in these Telcos?? Take one such problem that I'm facing currently with one these Telcos - ORANGE: I bought their much touted 21Mbps modem. The issue at hand is that I need to share the Internet connectivity with other residents of my house via a WiFi router. My router, a D-Link DIR-825, has a USB port that supports a 3G modem. There is one obstacle that I must overcome with the ZTE modem for me to be able to use it with my D-Link router -- I must find a way to disable the virtual CDROM and card reader from the USB stick/modem. The problem is no technician at ORANGE knows how to do this. Probably there is a technician (I have a feeling Orange must have gotten ZTE to train some technicians, or in the daftest form, ZTE must have seconded some techies to Orange!) but it's not possible to reach him/her/them! My router already works with the Safaricom's Huawei E1820, because I was able to go-ogle and find the AT Command to use to disable the virtual CDROM (AT^U2DIAG=0 does the disabling; AT^U2DIAG=1 re-enables it if I need to), which then enabled my router to recognize the USB modem. Fortunately, after installing the drivers on a computer, I really do not require the virtual CDROM interface anymore. I have not been able to find an equivalent command for ZTE-MF192 USB stick and has called Orange Customer Support (Data+Internet) so many times and they simply don't have a clue as to what I am asking for. I'd have thought they are trained to know that some clients are more demanding than others and as such they are allowed to go the extra mile and reason outside the box to help such customers. I am not sure if I am expecting too much, but because I paid money to get this modem, I'd expect Orange to help me in any way that I'd like to use the modem. They still make their money by allowing me to use it. What I don't seem to be able to wrap my head around is why there is no technician at Orange (whether native or Chinese) who can help me with this problem? Aren't we supposed to expect a better quality support from these Telcos than we are getting now?? I started by generalizing on "Telcos". I have only detailed my problem with Orange, but such problems are not exclusive to Orange. Is this the future of computing? Should programmers be studying and building apps in anticipation for this next technological shift or will users still favor Operating systems that are resident in their computers? or is this another one of Google's failed projects? My take is: I love my OS however slow or fast it is and I don't ever want to be dependent on the internet to work on my computer in any case most of my work -> coding is offline, I only use my browser to network and research. Wapendwa Maskanki na Maskanketi, Naomba usaidizi kidogo. I called Jamii and requested for fiber connectivity. The first time I called, I was told it is Ksh. 40K for 2Mb I called later on to enquire about WiMax (so as to compare with fiber) and the next person I talked to told me that they do not have WiMax (even though it is listed on the website) but if I wanted fiber, it will cost me Ksh. 20K for 2 Mb. I then got suspicious, so I called again after an hour (this time I used my fake female voice so that they don't know it was me again). Lo and behold, the next person told me that fiber is Ksh. 60K for 2Mb...they even went further and told me that the can give me WiMax kando kando...eeh, if you know what I mean...just like ugali saucer... Anyway, my friends, is there anyone on the list from Jamii who can tell me the OFFICIAL prices of fiber from Jamii? Hello All, I require a PRSP that can do bulk messaging with Airtel (specifically - will explain below). The PRSP *must* have an interface that can 1. Give the user a page where they can upload the numbers and message, confirm and click send 2. View a report showing the messages as they are going, delivery reports etc 3. Be able to export these reports (excel or csv) 4. Be able to stop a session of outgoing messages, and resume them if they so wish 5. Show credits available This portal should have user/password protection Now, the reason they want Airtel is a) they have already negotiated the rate with Airtel - b) they cannot connect directly to Airtel because they don't have SMPP client, web interface etc and license c) they will introduce the PRSP as their partner to Airtel, so they pay Airtel, and Airtel credit the PRSP's bulk message account d) they will negotiate with PRSP directly on markup per message and pay PRSP directly for that e) they then use PRSP web interface for the above They also will be sending messages automatically some interface (http,etc) which they will connect to their system Needed very urgently Pesa Pap Contact me we close the deal today. 09/07/2011 It all begun on Saturday 9th july. Me my husband mbugua and our baby girl decided to go and see our land that that we had bought at juja farm. The land is located 8 kilometres off the Thika super high way from juja. It was around 2pm and we stay at kikuyu. So we enter our white Toyota NZE which my husband bought a week before at a car yard along Ngong road Nairobi... let me take you back a bit to the day we bought the car... When we bought the car my husband who is so keen on security decided to go and install an alarm to chase away would be thieves. When we were there a man came and introduced himself as mwaura just after we had finalised the deal and advised us instead of putting the alarms we should instead install a tracking device on the vehicle. He further advised us that we should not go to the well established offices that they would charge high prices for the tracking device. We took his number and told him that we would get back to him as he was offering to install a traking device at only 12,000/= shillings. He even gave us directions to where we can get him at Ngara. We decided to shop other companies to find out the truth and found out they charge 25000/= to 35000/= for the tracking device. We decided that since these companies were expensive we should go for Mwauras tracking devices as they offer more features. My husband called Mwaura the following day and decided to install a tracking device from him although he had no office and i guess no papers to do the work. We reached at Ngara where he installed a tracking device and showed my husband how to track using his phone he even accepted 6000/= as down payment the rest were to pay in 30 days. We were satisfied knowing that our car was safe and knew we had gotten the best bargain....ok back to our story we reached juja farm around 5.30 pm as we had stopped at a club called By pass in for some meat. We started viewing our land interviewing people to know the current value of our land. We were so happy as we had bought the land for 30,000/= in 2002 and now the land was valued at 350,000/=. We hadn't been here for some time so we stayed for some time. As we were viewing other pieces of land in the area my husband told me that some men who passed us looked familiar but we ignored. We finished our business and decided to head back home as it was getting late. We started our journey back home and as we were going thru that dirty road so as to join the high way our car suddenly stopped. We wondered why it happened as it was quarter tank and the car had been serviced. When it stopped my husband opened the bonnet to check what was wrong. On opening the bonnet the car with three men stopped besides us and pointed the gun to my husband. I was about to scream when all over sudden the second man pointed a knife at me. I kept quite and the two men ordered as in the car. One man used his phone to start the car and all of us drove off. I guess someone with the codes stopped the car. At the time i just held my baby close to me as one man was busy molesting me. My husband had been bundled in the boot. We drove for what seemed to be eternity to a secluded place where the thieves stopped. The thieves opened the bonnet and removed a tracking device right in front of my face. It's like they had all the information on the tracking gadget. They stripped us and one of the thugs tied us together and they went with our baby. This was after they raped me for a few minutes. We were left there for some time .my husband was unconscious by then as they had beaten him. We stayed there the whole night and in the morning a passerby rescued us. We were rushed to thika district hospital after which we ended up in Kenyatta as my husband had major injuries. I was the first to be discharged and started looking for our baby. Fortunately we found her at a police station abandoned having been brought by a Good Samaritan. My husband was discharged two weeks later, we are now recuperating. We went to the police station and on trying to reach mwaura his mteja all this time we have never found our car despite reporting to the police. The investigation are ongoing and cant divulge alot of info now but What i have been told is that there is a cartel of thugs installing tracking devices in ngara and hurlingamm, ngong road e.t.c. . What i can't understand is who is licensing people to start tracking as the other day my friend told me a colleague where she work buys tracking devices and install in people cars. I thought this is a security issue and the government should vet tracking companies. I was told they are supposed to be vetted by cck but who goes around checking. MWAURAS COMPANY WAS CALLED SIMBA TRACK does cck know of such a company or any security agency If any tom dick hurry can order units from china and install in our car how safe are we . This is a security issue and should be treated with the seriousness it deserves I BLAME THE GOVERMENT FOR NOT PROTECTING ME . I BLAME THE GOVERMENT FOR RAPING ME AND I BLAME THE GOVERMENT FOR LETTING THUGS DUISGUSE THEMSELF AND STEAL FROM US. Hi, So I have been going on this for some days now, and the biggest issue to any content person is data protection. In regards to media streaming, in particular, audio, is there a solution to prevent audio capture from a browser? I have seen this being implemented in most websites, though their path is a media server with a secure connection. The other option is a separate audio player like Itunes, but we all hate installing things onto our computers.

Amazon, which has been said to be the world's largest online retailer , with custom presence in United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Japan, and China saw consumers spend more than USD 1 billion via mobile devices in the period 2009 - 2010. Africa is missing from the list of regions where Amazon has a presence and this had led to many ventures seeking to fill this glaring gap. Internet penetration in Africa has been wanting but recent investments in undersea fibre cables to boost broadband access has served to expose more consumers to the power of the internet. Access to the internet via mobile devices has also grown , with mobile access more often than not being the first touch point. While there are many ecommerce services, few such as Kalahari from the well heeled Naspers Group would feature on common lists of well known initiatives. Why are these services not better ingrained into our daily fabric? Why haven't they taken off, yet they offer many benefits? Two thoughts on those questions; first I am of the opinion that we are yet to map the offline retail experience to digital platforms in a way that will shows consumers value and second, which I believe poses the largest challenge is the lack of a proper address system in East Africa. Am I the only one seeing the death of Samsung et al? Samsung is screwed on the tablet front. Lawsuits from Apple and the pricepoint on the Amazon tab mean their product will have a huge reduction in sales. Lack of a datastore is also an issue. Apple has iCloud. On the phone front, it will be a replay of WW1, with Google being the untrustworthy party. Microsoft is going to be tightly integrated with Nokia etc. Speculation really... Skunks, Is it just me or has airtel finally opened up its 3G. Im in the CBD experiencing great speeds and even able to stream youtube. Then again a provider according to me is not fully rolled out until I get the same 3G in buru Buru and Umoj and on Jogoo Road.. Anyone on airtel let me know if you have the same experience. Kevin

It is only a matter of time before Amazon puts out a phone too. Eventually they will all have a tablet, a phone and a box that connects to your TV. Apple has iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. Google has Android phones and tablets plus Google TV. Amazon will need to add the other two devices to compete. One of the features that Amazon is touting here is Whispersync which automatically synchronizes all your media (books, videos, music) between your different devices. That only makes sense if you have multiple Amazon devices. I agree that Samsung, HTC and the other pure hardware vendors are in serious trouble here. Apple and Amazon will always be able to undercut their pricing because they get more revenue from the content and services (music, video and book purchases/rentals, app store purchases...) than from the hardware. They can afford to sell the hardware at a loss while Samsung and HTC cannot. I think the coolest feature is not the hardware or the price but Silk - the cloud based web browser that uses Amazon EC2 as a giant predictive cache/optimizer. Anyone know what is happening to Zuku/Wananchi support? They never bother to answer emails anymore and calls to their support phone line go totally un-answered. The last time I managed to talk to someone on their (new) support line 020 520 520 5, I had to call their NOC first as no one was picking their support line. The person I spoke to then proceeded to yawn continuosly in my ear (it was around 10pm, but still...). Anyone know who the customer relations manager is? Word of Caution [don't leave ID card at Reception desks]

FYI, Seems there is a cartel at View Park Towers reception that photocopies visitor's Identity cards/Passports without consent. A friend of mine is just from there. He had left his ID at the reception desk, luckily, the office he had gone to served him fast. Coming out, he signed out at the reception at the ground floor the asked for his ID card. It wasn't among the IDs in the out tray. They started looking for it, by coincidence, another guard showed up carrying a white A4 sheet and his ID. "Here is the ID, it is five shillings" he told the guard on duty. Since he wasnt aware they were searching for the ID, he placed both the ID and the photocopy on the desk. When the owner of the ID asked why they had given out his ID and why they photocopied it without permission -- deafening silence! They could not explain. so the owner took both his ID and photocopy after making so much noise! Just a word of caution. We all know what happens in identity thefts! A word of warning forthose of you who may be regular Nakumat customers. Overthe last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Simply going out to get a few odds and ends has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don't be naive enough to think it couldn't happen to you! Here'show the scam works: Twoseriously good-looking 20-21 year-old girls come over to your car as you are packing your shopping into the trunk. They both start wiping your windshieldwith a rag and Windex, with their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts. It is impossible not to look. When you thank them and offer them atip, they say "No" and instead ask you for a ride to another Nakumat. You agree and they get in the back seat. On the way, they start having sex with each other. Then one of them climbs over into the front seat and performs oral sex on you, while the other one steals your wallet. I had my wallet stolen Aug. 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th, and24th. Also Sept 1st, 3rd, twice on the 7th, three times just yesterday and verylikely again this upcoming weekend. So,please be careful during these trying times. :D

Hi Skunks, I want to install a solar solution in shagz, being as that KPLC have been oohh so willing not to give us elec for the past few decades, after several applications. It should be enough to power a small house with 4 bulbs and a tv.
