-Disable vtp. Prune manually. 60 is not a large number. Just for comparison for one segment of our network we have well over 7000 Vlans and yes stp/vtp are disabled. We planned it that way. -Even if you choose to go L3 end to end. I wouldn't advocate for a total stp shutdown as has been advised unless you are very sure no one can attach a random switch or other bpdu generating device. You can start planning the transition though. The article makes it sound like only international providers are blocked from using alphanumerics but the local provider we are using also has the same issue (although maybe they are going through an international provider as well). Are there any local Bulk SMS providers that are still able to send with an alphanumeric or do we have to become a PRSP to be able to do it? Hey skunks I need to implement fastest convergence on VLAN's. One way is implementing PVST (Per VLAN STP) and have preset root bridges, now the question which among the following facilitate faster root bridge election and hence quicker convergence *#spanning-tree vlan **vlan_no.** priority **value** #spanning-tree vlan **vlan_no.** root **{primary |secondary}* The second way is implement Multiple Spanning Tree (MST), though I havent implemented it and dont know the shortcoming but seems faster and lighter than PVST. Question is how is the experience to those who have implemented it and speed of convergence and fault tolerance ./TheMburu -- Conservatism is the adherence to the old tried against the new untried.

Hi All, Sometime last year i attended a Home Expo event and was astonished at the prices of most of the stuff #was looking for Solar powered Garden lights#.... No wonder the USD went crazy on Kenya since we are simply importing everything.... Anyway....i was wondering whether we have some bright campus dudes/ladies who can come up with soft Garden lights.I do not want to connect them to the House mains (KPLC) but would rather leave it charging during the day and battery powered at night. If you could throw in a motion sensor so that the lights remain off and only switches on when triggered by movement id appreciate. Contact me offlist. Eric

So recently wazi wifi has been worse and slower than my phones 2G network. Trying to get some help from the Wazi team has proven pointless and I guess its time to buy a modem and go back to pay for what you use services. Wazi wifi was good, until it started disconnecting every 5 minutes. I dont have the time and patience for a network that doesnt suit my needs and costs me more

OTV is mainly (and makes sense) for data centre interconnects. Most low end switches don't support it. Hi Aki, I find problem in reading emails in this digest, quotes look similar to original text. Yeah I have found this problem while in Kenya. Its very hard to find someone in Kenya especially in Nairobi who can recommend a customer to another person for free.I can imagine them hiding code.People dont know one thing, the code they are rushing to download was made by others` hard work. We should have a spirit of openness as others who has spent everything to bring opensource to us.There are lots of ways to benefit from recommending your fellow, if you dont have aproduct: - He might direct customers in later days. - He might offer commission per refferal. - Client might trust you and slowly turn you into a consultant. Many time when in Nairobi I bump with these kind of scenarios. You go to a shop where you shop regularly, and you ask for something, the guys finds that its not in stock, (Then he push to specs)he decides to opt what other Kenyans do, go to someone`s shop looking for the product, he goes all the way from shop to shop, store to store (time is passing-And everything else is paused), then he finds that he has few options as the product isnt available within his friends stores.Then a new problem arise,he cant get from another dealers without cash+ he cant buy as he isnt sure if the client will buy.He goes back to the client claiming the product isnt avilable in Nairobi (??????). Then it comes another scenario this time is Hi Tech gear.A customer is looking for a latest gadget for as cheap as possible. customer step in a shop, you buy one or two products, you request for another(this time a gadget with multiple versions), You ask for the latest. A shop keeper doesnt even know price ranges in town.He start with unclear words then he find a shield into specs( he doesnt get clues from the word "..the latest.." yet he want to make odeal out of it).Then a client ask if the shop keeper can help out so that this client can get into the store.Here the client want to see varieties, price so that he can make an optimum selection depending on the budget and demand.The shop keeper again because of his greed is in trouble again, he cant ask for a for disturbance fee, neither for a commission from the next shop owner for bringing business because he want a to up amount.And because he was caught by surprise, and the shop owner isnt within his circle of friends and product are price tagged.The guy decided not to be helpful at all.He looks like an idiot and misses evrything. Listers, Considering the fact that ICT plays a critical role in our present environment, we are likely to see an increase in the number or websites and domain names that will be registered this is likely to bring about a myriad of issues. My concern is we may see an upsurge similar to what happened in the mobile phone industry, the question i have therefore is are we prepared from a legal perspective for possible conflicts that may arise should there be such an upsurge ? are our courts prepared for this kind of cases or shall we resort to out of court settlements, what lessons can we learn from the recent issue between google and mocality as an industry, i know it was easy to point fingers and blame but again is it possible that the staff involved engaged in malpractices our of ignorance which may have been due to the fact that there is no law, or statute for data protection and no clear dispute resolution mechanism , if this were enshrined in the law, it could be to educate the masses on the same. For the WiFi Gurus - High Power AP with Multi-SSID Support

I am doing a WiFi network in a building with two offices across a think concrete wall. I'd like the two to share just one AP, and I'd like to have a separate SSID for Guests. I am therefore looking for a high power AP that supports multiple SSIDs. By high power, I mean something transmitting in the range of upto 1000mW of output power. Ubiquiti PicoStation M2-HP has this sort of transmit power but not multiple-SSID, althout I see it's possible by manually editing the config file via the CLI. This doesn't look good if this device was to be managed by someone without such detailed knowhow. I am considering also the Linksys E4200 but I cannot find any details about the transmit power. How Swift-Global's Mabeshte became millions of times better than KDN's butterfly

well, Mabeshte is just-so-obviously-much-better than Butterfly. Its a good thing KDN gave it to swift-global. KDN din't know how to manage butterfly the way swift-global does... in fact, KDN did such a bad job, that swift-global had to rebrand it to Mabeshte. Me and swift-global are trully "mabeshte" :-). You see, Mabeshte is so much better than butterfly because...... 1) Butterfly was cheaper .... but eww!! who wants cheap things!? excuse me, but I like to live above my means. Butterfly had a monthly unlimited bundle that cost 2320..... but how was it cheaper if Mabeshte sells unlimited internet for 24hrs at 50 bob (i.e 1500 bob a month) ???? -> well... it turns out that you will never spend just 50bob on mabeshte to get their net. Oh nooo.... there's the 10bob transaction fee charged for the paybill payment..... and to that, add the 50bob cred you'll spend calling support coz their system won't automatically email/text you a username & pass to surf through mabeshte. If you're lucky, u may have to spend 100bob if the system “completely missed” the mpesa sms for some reason.... ...in fact, its taken 5hrs and a bamba 50 for me to start surfing on mabeshte to send this email. and as for reversal of a botched payment.... it could take up to 60hours for swift-global to initiate it … ( and, as my collegue experienced it, you may have to send them instructions [with screen-shots] on how perform a reversal) and how is that a good thing.... it turns out that the longer it takes for you to receive an mpesa sms, the sweeter it is when it gets there :-) and while the monthly payment to butterfly was apparently “more convenient” than paying 50bob daily to mabeshte, I like the way mabeshte helps me impress my friends because I appear to have money in my mpesa all the time :-), hehehehehe Additionally, calling their support number (020692100) will first give you a pre-recorded "hallo"... and then give you a dial-tone which is actually charged as if someone picked up the phone!! my friends now think i'm on post-paid!! Swaga aje aje!! try it now and see! Just call, get to dial-tones, hang-up, and see your cred Disclaimer: tested on safcom. 2) Butterfly was faster.... And yes... Swift-Global, in all their intelligence, know that capping speeds to 64kBps (kiloBYTES, not kilobits) helps reduce global warming and surges Kenya towards realisation of the vision2030 and Konza City.... …. and butterfly did the opposite... you see .... it was just *TOO* fast. And y'all know too much of something is deadly. When surfing at a butterfly hotspot alone (or late at night), butterfly indecently gave me its all!! can u imagine!! that's very, very.... veeeryyy "tabia mbayaaa".... hebu imagine that i would clock 1.5mBps (megaBYTES, not megabits)!! JEEZ!! It was so much that it was my slow comp that was the bottle-neck … not the network!! and that's just wrong!! It made me feel really bad that KDN would mock my decade-old laptop with speeds that could have possibly killed it!! I mean.... how dare they!! ati 1.5mBps!! !!! NKT !!! swift-global's speeds... sigh... their capped speeds mean that the average ebook or mp3 will take 20 minutes to download, giving me ample time to focus on more important things.... like family.... or other even more important things... like solving world poverty, or eradicating world hunger and famine, or helping the flowers in my garden cross-pollinate... or trolling on the skunkworks mailing list.... Very important things indeed!! and while I could stream at 720p or 1080p on butterfly, my comp could barely render the stream properly given its low specs.... but swift-globals cares for computers like mine, and cap their speeds to force me (and everyone else) to stream at 320p, which is good for my computer. Moreover, the capped speeds give me ample time to do other "important things" as I wait for the buffer to fill up! Kudos switf-global!! 3) Butterfly had tech-smart staff in their tech-support department .... WTF!? who wants to call support and get a know-it-all geek on the other end who speaks gibberish!? How i'm I, a skunkworks troll, supposed to make sense of... "have you confirmed that your computer is configured to receive network configuration data via DHCP"... JEEZ!! what on earth does that mean?! .... well.... ok.... i guess the butterfly tech team knew what they were talking about, and they did resolve down-times within an hour or two.... or ten-minutes. and yes.... they appeared to be well trained... but jeez!! I like tech support people who speak my language... tech support who tell me to "turn you computer off, then turn it back on, then install a good antivirus, then wait 15 minutes before connecting."..... and thats the kind of support swift-global gives!! Seeeee!!!! ... I told you swift-global support is much better! and sometimes, when you call swift-global support a lot (i.e more than two times), you'll get to talk to a woman with ATT!! and thats so cool!! I know y'all like women when they're all fiesty n ferocious :-) i know i do, heheheheh ….. and that's another good reason why swift-global needs to be more expensive. That fiesty tech-support lady is obviously paid a lot of money!! that kind of customer-support service doesn't come cheap!! ….. in fact... I think I'll call support again once I email this :-D 4) Butterfly was more reliable, with fewer downtimes... .... and that was a recipe for addiction to the internet!! Swift-global knows this, and that is why they let their downtimes last days on end. This also helps reduce global-warming, since computers produce less heat energy when they are not being used to browse ( or stream at 720p) … just ask any primary school science-teacher to verify this! and yes.. you guessed it... the down-times give me ample time to focus on important things.... and butterfly was rude enough to encourage internet-addiction by maintaining their network!! jeez!!.... after swift-global took over, one of their “nodes” (a pole with lots of transmitters) was toppled over by strong winds, and stayed like that for months!! and the node i'm currently connected to has had perenial power issues for 1 and a half years.... kudos swift-global :-)!! ... swift-global just knows how to run things. Earlier today, as I waited for a payment to go through on mabeshte (for five hours), I had ample time to do something important.... i.e. draft a solution for world-piece. And as I have penned it, the solution to world piece will start with swift-global handling the world's communications :-)... in fact, whoever named swift-global "swift-*global*" must have known this too! i bet he came up with the name after he got ample time to consider it during a down time :-) later guys.... the fiesty support-lady just picked up :-)

Technology Producers Group

I'd like to call on the moderators of this tech forum to create a separate mailing list/group that will be called the Technology Producers Group. I personally don't mind end consumers as they are the spenders and the final markets, but what I cannot stand are technologists-consumers anymore. They really irritate the annoyance out of me, I just may end up going down the wrong road with people which is counter-productive and not my intention in the first place. We have a few years to match the growth in the tech sectors, however an early start means a good preparation and foundation, IMHO. If you think that you want to be/or can be a potential Technology Producer for consumer or expert markets whether local or export, you should be part of this group. Whether software or hardware or whether specialist, you can be part of it. There's no rush as such, think about it and lets take this group forward. If anyone else out there wants to use this idea and make such a group, let me know as I'd like to join up. I'll make this a final post for a short while and will only be checking if there are any responses. Thank you. Rgds. :-)

The main concept that differentiates the planned innovation center and normal banking is how evaluation for funding is done. In normal banking you must have a track record, assets to use as collateral but in this instance the criteria is different bankable ideas with how well you execute & track record at the centre of it. Of course you don't just write ideas on a pad and expect wads of bank notes to follow those ideas. Orange Corporate land lines

Skunks, Just wondering whether there is anyone from Orange on this list to hear this. Whenever I call to report on an issue (faulty line etc), the customer service staff have to keep me on hold as they walk to a place where they create a ticket and then return to give me the reference number. On average it takes 3 -5 minutes of holding. I'm just wondering if it is a capacity issue or a resource issue that makes it impossible to have computers on their desk so they can create tickets fast enough as I'm concerned how much time is being wasted in total as they walk to create the ticket and as the customer waits. After having spent a pretty significant part of the last year and half recruiting software engineers here in Nairobi it seems to me that on average Kenyan developers already have five or ten time times the number of certifications that developers in the US do. At the same time, based on my technical evaluations of the candidates I've seen, software engineering talent seems to be inversely related to the number of certifications. It has gotten to the point where I count certifications against the candidate when I look at their CV. In my opinion, top developers have a real passion for coding; enough that they spend a lot of their spare time coding or thinking about coding. These are folks that would code even if they weren't paid for it - they do it because they enjoy coding and solving challenging technical problems. A passionate coder would rather spend his/her free time doing extra coding for their employer, working on their own cool side project or contributing to an open source project than taking an exam. I'm not sure if the interest in certifications here is because local employers put a high value on them but my experience in the US is that most top tech employers don't. On the contrary I've seen job ads from Google that explicitly ask for engineers who have contributed to open source projects but I've never seen one ask for certification. For entry level software engineers, it is all about the university program attended. If you graduated from MIT, Stanford or Carnegie Mellon with decent marks you can walk into just about any entry level position at any tech company. The people who get certifications in the US are those that don't have a degree at all. I would be surprised to hear that any Carnegie Mellon CS grads are out getting certifications. Rather than having Carnegie Mellon focusing on this certification program why not have them open up a campus in Nairobi like they are doing in Kigali? As a hiring manager, someone with a degree from Carnegie Mellon Nairobi would jump right to the top of the list over the folks with 20 different certifications. Josh

Any help on this? The current website is using another GeoLocation script that ade me design three different websites. @Peter, I like the solutions you propose, particularly the summer camp and getting computers to young kids who are interested in programming. When I was in Rwanda they were rolling out the one laptop per child laptops and if that is done right it could have a pretty big impact in the long run. I also agree that the focus of a university program should not be to teach lots of different technologies but to focus on learning one or two with some depth and with lots of practice coding. The program I attended didn't focus on any particular technology or programming language but rather on fundamental concepts of computer science like data structures, algorithms, AI, compilers, operating systems and theory. Grades in those classes were almost exclusively based on individual coding assignments and projects rather than on exams. Once you have these fundamentals you can teach yourself to code in any language/technology as evidenced by the fact that pretty much none of the popular programming languages/platforms of today even existed when folks in my generation were at university yet we are not having any trouble finding work using current technologies. @Joram, good point that a certification would be a good way for someone does not have a university degree to be more marketable. I would fully support it for that purpose. There are certainly plenty of examples of good coders who never completed school and it is harder for them to get hired, especially at first, both here and in the US. I have to disagree though that getting a well rounded education is not important. A good developer needs to be able to understand not just the technology but also the end users problem domain. The more well rounded an education you have the better you are at that. These days, the most marketable computer science grads in the US are those that have done both computer science and an additional subject e.g. computer science + biology for bioinformatics or computer science + finance to work on Wall Street. Mike, now that I know you have a bunch of certificates my respect for your technical skills has dropped a couple of notches. Seriously though even if Chipuka can accurately measure coding skills then it would just help weed out the job applicants who can't do loops and arrays. However, the problem isn't that I can't weed those folks out already. I have become quite good at eliminating under qualified candidates early on in the recruiting process. The real problem is that the overall number of applicants in Nairobi who are able to pass my screening tests is relatively small. Creating another certification by itself doesn't bring up the skill level of the average Kenyan software developer it just tells you which ones are not skilled and which ones are. The real focus should be on getting more developers that have the necessary skills. This can be done through better training at the university level and before (university is really too late start), on the job training etc... Some will argue that adding the certification will help the educational programs focus on the right skills but if that is really the goal then wouldn't it be easier to just work directly with the universities and schools to improve their curriculum and teaching? My experience with big tests is that you just push to people to study for the test and they don't end up with a deep understanding of the subject matter. I hope I don't sound overly negative on the skill level of Kenyan software engineers. We have hired a team of really top notch Kenyan developers at Bridge who are doing fantastic work and have taught me a lot. Most of them gained their skills studying at local universities and working at local software companies. I just don't think that there are enough engineers at that level to support even the current local demand let alone enough for IBM to come in and hire hundreds of them for BPO. Its really simple,get a linux box(firewall) it can do all that ,because am guesing that your router might nt be a cisco so this would be the easiest . You dont have to buy a new comp as long as you have one powerful machine ,then you can install the linux software and configure it accordingly. (INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD). That echoes previous comments from ARM-based chip makers such as Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM). In addition, ARM-based machines will include certain Office desktop apps, such as Word and Excel and codenamed "Office 15," that have been created to use touch and consume less power, he said. Windows on ARM also will support all new Metro-style apps, Sinofsky said. Metro is Microsoft's interface that presents information in small squares of moving images and text called tiles. Microsoft sent shock waves through the tech sector a year ago with a radical shift in strategy, a plan to develop its next generation of Windows software that relies less exclusively on 30-year partner Intel. Fastest 3G in Kenya - Who is?

I have read some blog entry by one, Moses Kemibaro, and it shows/proves that Orange 3G is the fastest in Kenya. Well, maybe at that time, but has anything changed since October 2011? I did use Orange 3G in Mombasa last year and yes, it was much faster than Safaricom. Today, Safaricom have taken out a full page Ad touting their 3G as the "fastest". If not just marketing gimmick, I'd like to understand what Safaricom means with "fastest" when the statistics out there put Orange as the "fastest". Safaricom's "fastest" 3G modem (Huawei E1820) is stuck at KES 9,999 retail price for almost 2 years now. Kwani they don't know prices of electronic gadgets need to come down fast? Just the other day, they punguzad the price of Nokia N9 from 69,999 to 55,999. They should reduce the price of this modem, I demand. Orange, OTOH, started with their modem at 7,000 and quickly moved it to 3,500 and I think now it's probably less. Kudos KQ webmaster, the booking process is now super good but remove the notice/warning requesting Credit Card payments to be supported by a copy of passport, letter of intent and copy of the credit card to be presented before boarding the craft. Assuming that have streaming media (audio and video), how would you go about charging for the media so that either: a) Each complete download to device is charged, or b) The used is charged for the total amount of data used. Mobile Phone for Kids - Opinion

Hello Skunks, I'd like to seek your opinion here, and lo! I am already mentally prepared for what might come my way:) My daughter, 7 years old, wants a mobile phone. I am thinking I should accept her request and provide one. Which phone it is is my current dilemma, but besides that I'd like to know from you if this is a good idea at all. And why it is not. My justification: 1. I am tired of fighting with her over my phones. These kids find their way into games on any phone. Not sure how they find them when I, the owner, have never gone for them. 2. She already knows how to call people - has their numbers in her hear (well, she has mine, her mums, her grandma's and grandpa's, not sure who else) 3. She says she wants to play games and to be able to call her parents whenever they are not near... I have her already running Qimo 4 Kids Linux on a small NoteBook, which has enough *games* and learning material, which I do believe is good enough computer for her. While I am at that point of "what the hell does she still want a phone for", I am still thinking it's right to just get her one. Does anyone have a compelling reason for or against me getting her a phone?
