The askari at your gate is a personal choice and can be defined as the implementation of a concept called "Defense in depth" which basically means that you opt not to rely on one security measure alone. This concept is optional and discretionary, for example, I don't have an askari at my gate because I am generally happy about the other measures that have been put in place by Govt, municipality and the neighborhood committee. National security (the sole premise of Government) in this day and age guards against a myriad of actors such as violent non-state actors (this category includes terrorists), narcotic cartels, multinational corporations (believe it or not) and like it or not, non-governmental organisations. My take on the CCK "spying" saga: A small step for Government but a leap for Kenya http://zinjlog.blogspot.com/2012/03/small-step-for-government-but-leap-for.… Today a story broken by the Daily Nation had the sensational headline "CCK Sparks Row with Fresh Bid to Spy on Internet Users<http://www.businessdailyafrica.com/Corporate+News/CCK+sparks+row+with+fresh…>". The story has triggered a very lively debate both in conventional broadcast as well as online media. While many feel threatened about the alleged invasion of their privacy, some of the more clued up are welcoming this development. The 'row' alluded to by the author the DN article seems to be attributed to some telecoms service providers reactions towards letters received from the CCK requiring them to cooperate in the installation of internet traffic monitoring equipment which the article refers to as "Network Early Warning System (NEWS)". Apparently CCK has clearly stated that the system will support the country's ability to detect and facilitate response to possible cyber threats. Kenya as a country has had her fair share of threats, both online or in the form of cyber-threats as well as in real life. The most significant of these was the bombing of the US embassy in Nairobi which took place on August 8th 1998 (a day before my wedding!) and resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people. The bombing, which took place simultaneously with a similar attack in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania was attributed to Al-Qaeda, the fundamentalist terrorist group associated with Osama bin Laden. The 1998 incident cast a spotlight on Kenya's low level of preparedness to deal with major disasters and also raised a lot of questions about our ability as a country to gather intelligence and act on it. A grenade blast which killed two<http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/3117817.stm> and and led to the near capture of one of the most wanted Al-Qaeda terrorists at a cybercafe in Mombasa in 2003 in an operation carried out jointly betweenKenyan and CIA operatives<http://www.armytimes.com/news/2011/11/army-years-of-work-led-to-al-qaida-ta…> was a result of close coordination between security agencies as well as the use of "high tech gear, low tech human intelligence and courage". Part of the high tech gear involved in this operation allowed the security officers to track and monitor "patterns" of online communication that allowed them to close in on the terrorists. In this incident and a few other similar ones it has always been reported that the "Kenyan authorities used information provided by" [foreign nation], why can't we have our own capability to gather such information? Especially when it seems that the terrorists use online technologies for much of their planning. It is therefore my opinion that the move by Kenya to improve her ability to detect and facilitate response to cyber-threats is a small step for the Government but a huge leap for the country. Business model innovation is becoming increasingly important as we look at addressing real world needs using technology. We have in the recent past seen discussions both online and offline about how government can play a better role in creating a conducive atmosphere for local technology companies to prosper. This call for government rethink how it conducts its business when seeking solutions is not without its counter arguments; the strongest being that the local tech sector cannot cry for protection while wanting to compete on the global market place. The technology ecosystem consists of different players but my desire is that we become net producers of exportable value. This is the only way that information technology will match and even surpass agriculture and tourism as the highest revenue earner for the Kenyan economy. To drive this different opinion home, it may be best to use an example. The concept of co-government investing will look like one of those very obvious things, once its broken down. I'm regretting ever doing that... This month has been a total waste of money and my small business and reputation is ruined. Ever since the marine Fiber cuts, have been getting less than a quarter of the bandwidth I paid for. Add to that their crappy migration last week and the connection intermittent connection on the WiMax CPE since Tuesday last week. This is situated less than a kilometer from the Base Station. Then why is it that its Multichoice Africa who are custodians of the domain? This is the same multichoice of GOTV fame. Hii all, is there an open source mail server...or a nice mail client ... *Current State.* 1. Using Microsoft Outlook for client...but the pst file has become very heavy approx 6gb..max should be 2gb from the literature. 2. Old emails are needed for reference purpose as old as 4 yrs old in some cases hence the size both in and out. 3. the heavy pst file sometimes makes the Microsoft outlook to freeze *Solution needed.* 1. A mail client that can import and handle the heavy pst file. OR A mail server opensource..that provides imap services so that one can access sent items on the server. Any suggestins rgds Chege 1.

this service works,its not perfect but its better than what we use to have some tym back. I know alot of clients who use this technology and though not satisfied fully(again, who is ever trully and fully satisfied?)they would not go back to what they had,simply becaus of some of the features or improvements on this network layers which brings in alot with them. Big institutions are on this technologies,and they have no intention of retractin back.instead of dismissing this solutions,lets not dismiss,but in our implementation we can learn and even improve on this technologies. And thats why we do nt have alot of innovators on this side of the world because we see excuses instead of opportunities to improve on the technology............ Hi skunks, I am not sure about other ISP's but i know we have SLA's. But SLA's are not for all clients because you have a client paying you 7-15k per month,but you realise that they want to claim more than they are paying. For instance ,the client goes down and for two days like they have been going down,it keeps flactuating regularly,so he tends to claim that he lost business due to our inconsistent link. Now it becomes tricky evaluating the cost of loss of business to this client. any way why wuold i give this kind of a client an SLA?what you are willing to pay shows what you should be getting back. With all the internet issues lately, affecting mostly the likes of AK, I envision a scenario where Safaricom shall be the next biggest ISP and will topple these other characters. they have all monies and infrastructure needed. For example with LTE being the new technology, they have enough chumz to replace wimax within a beat of a heart. while others like iway are still relying on VSAT and AK currently maximizing on Wimax/radio. I stand to be corrected that we should move business connections to Safaricom and especially MPLS. Regards, Simon

That rule out VPS. Wonder if there is hosted PBX providers with presence in Kenya? I am not certain how the E1 would be handled without local office. He can set a ssh tunnel and run a SIP truck between PBX across the offices. That must have been a very nasty experience!In their defense,judging by the ratio of such complaints to their number of clients,I would call this an isolated case which cannot be compared to the many I've heard(and keep hearing) about other smaller ISPs! Nonetheless,the issue is not the number of complaints but rather the resilience of these ISP's networks.We are increasingly becoming a nation that is dependent on the internet,think KRA and KNEC.The question remains whether we can trust these companies to maintain access at all times to these services that we need. First of all,let me give credit where it is due.As I have said before on this list,Safaricom has people who know what they are doing!If you ask me,they are the true Pride of Kenya!Do you see all the complaints you've had with your ISPs since yesterday?Well,let us just say they are rumours to me - I have only heard about them but I've not seen any of them - the only time I was down is when I switched off my devices to take a nap! :) Isn't it funny that we could describe ISPs by the negative things we've come to experience about them?Quickly,fill in the answers to the questions below to see what I'm talking about. 1.0 Which ISP has a customer care that never picks up calls and rarely resolves issues? ___________________ 2.0 Which ISP is known to over-promise and under-deliver? _____________________ 3.0 ISP x launches products into the market and pulls them off even before you know it.The name of this ISP is? _______________ Do not even think about the Government,if there is only one ISP/MNO who is familiar with such a term as 'redundancy' then the problem is bigger than we thought initially!Every time you bring this up they will give you long theories based on Cost/Benefit analyses and ROI.Then how come someone else is doing it?Is it that these companies do not understand the effects they have on people's businesses and organisations or are they just being careless? Feel free to agree or disagree in the comments below. What else can you add to the list? [1] 1. General fail It’s a cross between the iPhone and a laptop, combining the inferior features of each. It doesn’t fit in your pocket, doesn’t have a keyboard, can’t make phone calls, can’t take pictures, and the most affordable model (still $500) only has WiFi. Fail on all accounts. 2. The iPad doesn’t compare to a book Reading a novel is just not the same without holding a book and turning the pages (though to be fair, this also applies to the Kindle or other eBook readers). And at 1.5 pounds, the iPad makes for quite a heavy book. Or think of it this way: if you spill something on a page in your book, it only affects that page or two. But if you spill something on your iPad, EVERY PAGE is smudged. Think about it. 3. The iPad is expensive People keep saying that the iPad is very affordable, with options between $500 and $800. With Netbook options in the $300 range and smart phone options in the $200 range, I question these people’s basic math skills.This quote from CNET says it all: “Logically, you know the iPad’s dimensions are no less portable than a book. But when a book costs between $500 and $800 and is made of glass, you treat it differently.” 4. Limited iPad battery life Touch screens generally run out of battery quickly. So although the iPad promises 10 hours of battery life, your books won’t run out of batteries after a 12 hour flight. Even the Kindle will last for four days without needing a recharge. So there are better options available. 5. iPad doesn’t compare to a laptop If you’re at home, and you need to look something up really quickly, you go to your laptop. It has a keyboard, which is much quicker than touch screen, and you’re already used to your browser interface. Hence, at home, there is no need for an iPad. 6. iPad doesn’t compare to a phone If you’re out and about, and you need to look something up really quickly, you take out your phone. Either you have a smartphone with 3G coverage or an internet-ready phone. No WiFi necessary. And usually, we already have an app for that. Hence, away from home, there is no need for an iPad. 7. The iPad doesn’t run flash REALLY??? Most streaming videos are run in flash. Many websites use flash, although according to Gizmodo, “the internet is starting to look different” to accommodate the iPad. REALLY??? This is what I call ridiculousness. It’s called a Netbook, people. It supports flash, has a keyboard, and it costs around $200 less. 8. The name iPad is too easy to make fun of When Apple announced the iPad’s release, the top trends on Twitter were #iMaxiPad and #iTampon. Enough said. 9. Paying extra for the internet There will be two 3G service options for the iPad: $15 a month for 250MB of data, or unlimited data for $29.99 a month. Not to mention that you have to pay extra for a 3G-capable iPad. This is on top of your home internet/cable/DSL bill and your cell phone bill. Is this really necessary? 10. There is no camera The iPad doesn’t have a camera. There’s no front facing camera for video chatting, there’s no back facing camera like the iPhone; again, you might as well use your phone, making the iPad unnecessary. 11. The iPad is awkward to carry around It’s not just the fact that it’s an awkward size between an iPhone and a laptop, or the fact that it’s 1.5 pounds and therefore heavier than most books. It doesn’t really fit in your hand too well, and you can’t set it down on your desk so that the screen faces you (like a laptop). And to bring it out with you, you’d have to awkwardly just carry it around or bring a large purse, a backpack, a laptop bag, or a murse (man purse). 12. People are just a little too obsessed Do you really want to be one of those people who falls for the latest fads because of those “social media experts” on Twitter? Wait a little while. See what your friends who fell for it have to say about it. Myself and many others who came before the search engine and the internet know fully well what we are talking about. Now we get labelled as "Trolls" but unfortunately the know it all could be blank quick-fix biashara generations. Meaning these closely resemble what LEGO did in the first place. The equivalent comparison is that of saying students should be allowed to use calculators and computers during examination time. The problem is not the use of technology advancements but whether the exam questions have become complex enough to warrant the use of calculator and computers, whether the evolvement has gotten to a point where the newer generations feel advantaged because of devices that the human mind can resolve in the first place. Some thoughts, and as usual IMHO & corrections welcome. :-) Rgds.

Skunks, I have two 'stupid' questions. 1.0 When you want to know whether a host on network is up or down you ping it,right?Is there an equivalent on mobile phones?If I want to know whether 0725****** is an operational number,is there a way of finding out without calling the number or calling Safaricom to ask them about it? 2.0 We know the location of a mobile device can be discovered using GPS or Cellular tower triangulation.If,for example,a person is using a feature phone then GPS is out of question.Is there a way to tap(for lack of a better word) into the service provider's triangulation info and send the info to the mobile number or store it for other uses?Think of it as a primitive navigation system. Hi All, I had an unfortunate incident in which I lost my laptop, a Toshiba Satellite L300 Laptop. The Laptop is grey in color and part of it had started fading to black. The serial number is Z8887843G. The battery was just about to die and the laptop was just throwing kicks of a dying horse in that it was quite old and it was enjoying its sunset years. Ok, the KPLC monitoring is exposing me to many many crazy scenarios on data collections and sets which I cannot complain as it's extremely interesting. One question: suppose that I wanted to create a torrent like data inputs where data can be shared amongst the various peers. How do torrents do it via a different ftp algorithm because they don't use regular ftp. Anyone with an in-depth understanding of torrent architecture would be able to help provide some clues. I have an e-mail account(uses pop) is configured in a computer, a black berry and an Ipad. The blackberry and the computer are working okay. On the ipad read mails keep on reloading. Even when I delete mails on the Ipad. The Ipad can't mark/keep track of mails the user has viewed thus it keeps loading them as new mails. Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?

Ok, I've been wondering this for a while. Kenya dominates in the Athletics and does very well. I wonder if other world class runners can actually believe that a search engine will help the with the lack of abilities just by simply doing a search. The scientific research also was non conclusive whether it was genetics or altitude. The lung capacity of Kenyan athletes is not the same as those of body builders, yet Kenyans can run marathons. I've seen them do the long marathons. And so can the Ethiopians. The same goes for any sports and even that Unga. So here is the search engine query and results that tries to grow Maize : - How to grow FREE Maize. For thousands of years droughts and famine have taken its toll on man/women kind. But we have the solution. First Plow the land, plant the seeds and make sure you have water irrigation to ensure the weather cannot affect the outcome. BUT, on the ground local Weather Stations warns of low rainfall. *So back to the Search Engine = How to make rain?* Search Engine comes back with results on how to make rain! = *You've got to be kidding me. Are you freakin' stupid that you cannot make rain?* . This is how its done: - Send a plane with Oxygen cannisters and look for certain clouds. Then release the Oxygen into these high altitude clouds, but conditions may vary on wind speeds. So you send a plane to make RAIN but the Wind blows away the RAIN carrying clouds to another place that DID NOT need rain, causing Floods!. Utterly useless Search Engines, you think. Not contend with making your own rain and its failure, you decide to Import Maize. Ask the Search Engine : *Maize Exporters and Free Delivery* so as to make some profits off the freeness. The Search Engine responds = Maize Exporters A,B,C etc. Contacts are these. You import the Maize only to discover that it does not meet local requirements! Dumb Search Engine! I wanted Blue Maize not Green Maize!. Not Contend with the Search Engine, you decide its easier to just fly over to the Maize Exporters and see what they have on offer from farming to exporting. You learn many things and will apply these methods. Search Engine = I can save you on energy, just go buy alternative energy. I can give you millions of results on alternative energy. So you go buy alternative energy, and then realise that it cannot power your heater during the cold months. You are going to die because of a search engine! Time for some humour. :-) Rgds.

It would be great to have average salary info for various IT positions be publicly available. Someone should run a survey and set up a website (salary.com but for Kenya). Businesses hiring in IT would definitely pay for the data. Would also benefit the overall sector to have this info be transparent to both employers and job seekers. I know this is kinda off-topic in relation to the purpose of what this forum is supposed to be about, but i have an inkling to understand why this guy is so infamous/famous in the tech community. His name elicits A LOT of mixed reactions...granted i just recently started visiting his site techmtaa.com which today posted a controversial article in relations to Ihub ( http://www.techmtaa.com/2012/03/05/what-is-the-true-intention-of-ihub-board…) but i would rather hear from other skunks who may have dealt with the guy if his bad rap-sheet is justified or is it just the work of haters. Some of the points he's arguing about Ihub has some weight but i personally disagree with the areas about the current crop of green members not needing the facility because they can afford to pay for themselves. Speaking as a student and also for my colleagues, the Ihub center has given me a lot of opportunities to enhance my craft so i would beg to differ on that. So my fellow skunks, is this the case of a blogger running his mouth without the full facts to back him up or..is he one of the many misunderstood folks around???

Windows 8 CP and single/double quoting punctuation marks

Is anyone trial-ing Windows 8 CP? I seem to have a problem with my punctuation marks - the single and double punctuation key. I have to press twice to get the marks, and only the 2nd press, I get the two punctuation marks instead of one. Ä is what I get when I press Shift+"+A - imagine I want to start a double quoted statement beginning with A. This problem is manifest in two different computers, so it's not a keyboard issue. Strangely, if you want to write a word like shortened form of <I will>, then the punctuation mark appears as soon as you press the first elle... :-) So you actually need to type another character before whichever punctuation mark you wanted can appear... Kenya Power Plans Sh20 Billion Cable Shift

Kenya Power expects to save Sh3billion a year by relocating its overhead power distribution cables to an underground system in the major urban areas of Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa in a Sh20billion project. The project will involve undergrounding of 645Kilometres of 11Kilovolt lines and 1,570Km of low power voltage lines. Vandalism prone transformers will now be placed in pad-mounted substations along roads reserves. MD Joseph Njoroge said the project will pilot in Nairobi's Upper Hill Area before moving to Industrial Area and then to Mombasa. Njoroge said the utility company is considering a proposal by the Chinese National Machinery Equipment Import and Export Corporation to carry out the project on an engineering, procurement and construct basis. "It's not yet finalized but we are working on a proposal to undertake the work in Upper Hill as a pilot," the MD who spoke at a stakeholders meeting in Nairobi said. Once complete, the project is expected to stabilize power supply and cur Kenya Power's operational costs. "It will have huge savings we have actually done what we would call a feasibility and the ROI is in the region of 18 per cent so we should be able to recoup back out investment in six years," Njoroge said. "We are talking of a saving of about Sh3billion every year." Nairobi will have 375Km of 11Kv cabling and 930Km of low voltage cabling with 740 pad-mounted substations. Mombasa will see 200Km of 11Kv and 400Km of low voltage cabling and establish of 330 pad-mounted stations. "As an example, we commissioned a new 2.5Km State House Road underground feeder from Cathedral Road last May," Njoroge said. "The Norfolk Hotel feeder from Parklands will be undergrounded by May this year." Kenya Power had invited various authorities such as the Ministry of Energy, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority, the Kenya Rural Roads Authority, Nairobi City Council, Nairobi Water and Sewerage Board and telecommunications companies. The utility is seeking a joint project development approach since different entities are also involved in laying underground infrastructure resulting in frequent service interruptions when cables are cut or water pipes punctured. Representatives from the KURA and KRRA asked Kenya Power to share its design plans so that they can compare them with their road designs to avoid conflict. The moment I connect the modem all I see are the volume counters going up and I cant tell whats eating up the net. I have disabled automatic updates. I admit I had never tried it before until Tuesday, I have not been able to register a softphone (different clients xlite, 3cx, linphone). I asked someone else to register though they are using a different connection and they were successful. Anyone aware if safaricom is blocking SIP or maybe its just a jinx, and I need prayers? With the maritime fiber cut and all, of course we have been requested to expect slow speeds; I did but was not prepared for what I'm seeing. The speeds are averaging 20-30% of what I am used to. My service is provided by an ISP under KDN.... Word has it that KDN who happen to be the only operator with reasonable SEACOM capacity has leased most of it to Queen Bee because they are paying top dollar. That's why the rest have to sort ourselves out. In the build towards the wiki type thing, I've got 2 files as follows: - File A contains the original data that is being updated say every 10 minutes. Therefore this file contains say the monitored statistics from say e.g 8am to 9am. The next automatic updated data will be available at 910am, which contains the data from 810am to 910am. - File B contains the data from File A but has been transformed to capture the entire data over a 24 hours cycle. *Here's the question:* - In File A and B, there's a clash of repetition data as follows. Between each update on File A between 810-910am, File B has to check for only the updated data between 9am-910am as it already has the other data between 8am-9am. The search criteria of course is the date & time field. *How can I use a search criteria into a string for comparison for File B when the data File A is not static and changes every 10 minutes? * So the data in File A example is as follows in realtime: ....contains the data from 0810am <raw_data>29/02/12-0900</raw_data> <raw_data>29/02/12-0901</raw_data> <raw_data>29/02/12-0902</raw_data> <raw_data>29/02/12-0903</raw_data> <raw_data>29/02/12-0904</raw_data> <raw_data>29/02/12-0905</raw_data> <raw_data>29/02/12-0906</raw_data> <raw_data>29/02/12-0907</raw_data> <raw_data>29/02/12-0908</raw_data> <raw_data>29/02/12-0909</raw_data> <raw_data>29/02/12-0910</raw_data> And in File B example is as follows: .....contains the data from 0800am-0900am but needs only the data between 0900-0910am. IMHO, Not that the visions cannot be met because there are probably people working hard towards such but it is unimaginable that the so called Telecommunications sector is hiding behind the cable cut as an excuse not to maintain continuity of services delivery. At this time, I suggest a full CCK investigation into the matter and the revoking of all licenses of the Telecommunication Sector Operators and Others who have failed to maintain the continuity aspect of telecommunications services. Are we saying ALL THREE CABLES have been cut? It is the duty of CCK to ensure that within the license provisions there are clauses that ensure Public Networks maintain continuity. Nation story on Page 24: Kenyans should expect slow internet for the next 3 weeks!!!! Let this be a serious eye opener for all, should we allow this kind of things to go on. I was very happy when the news for Airtel upgrading to 3.75G in the late December by one Larry, I couldnt wait for the service having been one of its loyal customers for over 500 days. The the wait was finally over and 3G was finally launched with it also come with free trials, but these is what happened: clients who had already purchased data bundles before, they were declared obsolete(my 29 MB went down the drain)the codes *180# was officially changed so that you cannot access your older bundlesthey changed the bundles codes to 544 which again they have changed today to 450, if you look at their GUI it works with 180, how the hell do they expect us to work with the same interfacethe work of its customer care(which is based at kencall) is only to escalate problems but have not solutiontry they twit handle, it was last replied on 21st february.I have have written a 300 word statement on their facebook but, they cunningly jump my comments and comment on othersmost of there services are down eg in nakuru the rate of drop calling is so high hata......they are working on consultations, I don know to whom by whomgo to this page and see the complaints http://www.facebook.com/AirtelKe?sk=wallone of the best comments was that "airtel wanatu Nyerify"the 3G is not working at allbecause you cannot purchase bundles, now they are charging 8/= per MB see comment below Jana saa tatu hivi nili dial *544# nika subcribe 50MB kwa 80 then nikafamishwa nigoje kwa mda. Until they decided to change tact and instead of making phones, make cameras with phones as extra add-ons. Imax theatre coming to Nairobi in March

I just passed the 20th Century and noted some coming soon for an imax theatre that is apparently due to launch any time from next week. Anyone in this forum experienced imax before ? attached an excerpt press release. Get ready people! IMAX is coming. You just have to wait until March of next year. Screen 1 at the Fox 20th Century Cinema is currently closed for renovations to accommodate the IMAX theatre. The upgrade will make Kenya the third country in Africa to have the IMAX Experience. The other two are South Africa and Nigeria. A 7.5 metre-high screen has been imported from Canada, according to Anna Ratkinova the Executive Director of the operational management of IMAX cinema in Nairobi. IMAX decided to put up the screen at the 20th Century Plaza because it is the only theatre hall in Nairobi that can support that size. Alexei Serkov, the representative of Blue Sky World says:“The addition of an IMAX theatre is symbolic of the evolution of the cinema industry in Central Africa, where the demand for a premium cinematic experience is growing.” Ratkinova said the theatre would also be completely renovated to resemble a modern theatre.Angel Media Ltd’s is also planning another screen in Nairobi two IMAX theatres in Mombasa in two years’ time. Movie-goers will pay approximately Sh1,000 compared to the current Sh500. As of 30 August 2011 there were a total of 560 IMAX theatres operating in 46 countries.These theatres initially evolved from showcasing visuals in museums and science centres but have proved popular in the commercial sphere.
