Safaricom Domains

I bought a .co.ke domain from Safaricom 2months ago @4000/=. Since then I have experienced service issues which take longer than acceptable amount of time to resolve, the first issue related to the wrong FTP details, when this was resolved I couldn't create a database on my hosting coz it required 70character long password, when this was resolved again, now the A records resolve to google instead of the IP to which my files are loaded. Been struggling with this bunch for the past 1 month incurring telephone cost of about 2000/= and lost business opportunity of about KES.0.5m. I've also incurred anger worth about 200k My question is: 1. If anyone has some legal experience, do I have grounds to sue? 2. Does anyone on this list have Safaricom domain SLA? 3. is there anyone on this list who can serve as a witness(Similar experience)? 4. I have a bash scripting question that has really bothered me; First i want to list files in a directory with a command - no prob Second - i want to get the name of the file - no problem Third i want to read the content of the file - no problem Fourth i want to extract some information , column and rows from the file - no problem My Idea: >My idea is to receive sms and forward to an email - working file but only one at a time! #script 1 >second is whenever a reply is sent from the email address "x" with subject "$CELLPHONE $MESSAGE" the script is called by clone to send the sms to user $cellphone - working file but only one at a time! #script 2 *Problem:* The directory contains multiple files with dynamic names (generated by system) some properties being date,time and cellphone number The problem is i don't know how to read multiple files name, read content to a file for processing at a go and output the results into another file using bash. I have very similar feelings about the fund. But again, I would have thought that we do have the concerned officers from the relevant bodies on these lists. On demand VPN setup

Hello All I am running some systems which more often than not are supported by contractors outside the country. For some of my contractors,i have site-to-site VPNs with them. The trouble i have is i do not want to have a site-to-site VPN because it is always up. Does anybody know how one can have an on-demand VPN when needed. ie incase a contractor needs to login and do a patch,they inform me what time they want to login;then i allow them at that particular time. Any ideas are welcome Regards

Ali, You have hit the nail on the head, i hope we can have a response from CCK regarding the questions that you have posted. The Universal Access fund will be key to last mile connectivity. I would also like to note what the likes of ZUKU are doing, it is really commendable the proposed mapping of residential areas by the Minister for Finance could also help in bringing connectivity to residential areas, the cost can then be split so that every household can get access. Hi skunks, Is there anyone on list who is running an Ushahidi instance? I am coming up with one, and my preferred application for receiving sms updates is FrontlineSMS. I am facing a challenge though with FrontlineSMS. When the Ushahidi site uses https, it does not sync the SMSes onto the website. For http, it works without a problem. Listers, Internet intermediaries can be looked at as go-betweens, they act between two parties on the Internet enabling the transmission and sharing of information. They allow communication, and provide knowledge and content of all types, from email to entertainment. However, they do not make decisions about the type of content that passes through their facilities. OECD (2010, p. 9) identifies Internet intermediaries to include ‘Internet access and service providers (ISPs), data processing and web hosting providers including domain name registrars, internet search engines and portals, internet payment systems, e-commerce intermediaries and participative networking platforms which include internet publishing and broadcasting platforms that do not themselves create or own content being published or broadcast’. >From a Kenyan perspective, it is important to consider mobile service providers as intermediaries since mobile telephony continues to set the stage for adoption of Internet access even though they are regulated under telecom laws. Intermediary liability arises where governments or private litigants can hold Internet intermediaries liable for unlawful or harmful content created by users of their services. The power and influence of Internet intermediaries, as well as their limitations in enabling communication and facilitating information flows is now attracting more attention in Internet governance discussions. Questions: 1. What are the laws that govern intermediary liability in Kenya? 2. What sort of content would be deemed a liability by intermediaries and therefore justify removal? 3. Network Advice

Skunks, I happen to work for an organization that has grown from 4 users to over 55 users. As a result our connectivity (internal ) has been strained and in my opinion needs to be done properly ( it has been a patch job) of adding extra access points. I heard that beyond certain throughputs wifi tends to be unreliabel. Is that true ? Isnt there a commercial wireless access point that can handle hundreds of users or is structured cabling the way to go. Another issue is that our office is on a top floor with masts and sattelite dishes. Could there be some interference ? Pole sana my friend, The guy seems to be that simple user who can quickly clicks remember my password pop ups msg from modern browsers.So the thief has decided to login and change all the emails.Possibly to follow an additional benefit within emails in your inbox.Or just to punish him even more.Or just to get any information from other guys about the tracking of the laptop. I have been recieving these kind of complains from simple clients who dont care to allow the browsers to remember their passwords.Some of them has paid a good prices.Some have diverted some payments to their account.And to make things worse they have created two way communications that legalize the transactions.Some have even gone further to charge the looser some amount of money as processing fees for the expected money(though the money have been routed other account).This has been occured to guys expecting money from from abroad in scenarios where people dont use phone confirmation much. Skunks, how do i permanently map a network drive on my linux box, i have noticed that each time the box restart the mapped drive never reconnects. The cmd i use is as follows mount -t cifs //192.168.1.251/download /down The drive being mapped is a NAS drive and /down is a folder on the linux machine. Please advice Secondly any one selling NAS drives with backup utility for up to at least 20 machines on the network.

This will save Kenya lots of cash otherwise spent on unnecessary travels abroad. For instance the PM didnt have to go all the way to Turkey to discuss Somalia. He could have just skyped. I have been testing Windows 8 since Developer Preview, Consumer Preview and now Release Preview. What beats me is that even between Consumer Preview and now Release Preview, M$ doesn't seem to give an update option. On two machines I have been running CP on, I am forced to do a complete reinstallation of everything! hello guys, just wondering if this can be done in batch. For every mp3 file in a directory, pick each and create a trunkated, 128kbps teaser in a ../samples/mp3filename_teaser.mp3 so that in folder /music/skunkworks/title1.mp3 ill have a corresponding /music/samples/title1_teaser.mp3 that is specifically at 128k. Any help will be appreciated. (or even point to a relevant readme as all that I get is not specifically handling this). Skunkers, I am faced with a unique problem. I have set up domain which is hosted on google apps. You receive and send emails no issues whatsoever. I have a device that I am configuring that does not allow one to enter the port numbers for the smtp for google. A search on the internet led me to aspmx.l.google.com that uses port 25. When I use the same setup on outlook - outgoing SMTP as aspmx.l.google.com and the port number as 25, I still receive the mail but not on the device. Any ideas on how I can get this to work? Scratch Card Expiry- The Orange Ordeal

Morning, I had this experience with yesterday trying to load my orange modem but the card wouldn't go through, on checking the card had expired, so i called CC and am told they don't activate expired cards. Who in this day and age does that? My argument: When the cards are developed, they are given a life span until which they should be used. If they are not used, they expire but their value is still intact since it has not been redeemed. Technically, its value is still intact as no one has used that code yet. How then is it not possible to unlock that value by just activating that card number since it has not been used before...? Mind you Airtel does it... HP ML 370 G6 Server : Power Related Issue

Hi Fellow Skunks, I am hoping those who had a chance to watch the webcast on IPv6 had an informative and insightful session. However, I would like need opinions on an issue with a server, *purely power based*. *What we have:* HP ML 370 G6 server, Win2k8, 64bit, 1 PSU 8 CPUs (2 cores, each quadcore), 8GB RAM, 8 HDD APC SC1500 UPS, protecting my above server *Scenario:* When power interruption occurs (low voltage/brownout/blackout), then server goes off immediately, this means its not protecting the server. For a blackout, we have to wait for mains power to resume before we proceed with anything For a low voltage (dim), the server power button gives an orange LED, meaning we have to wait until sufficient power resumes (Voltage analysis shows the server will only remains ON when there is mains power input of >235 Vrms to UPS. Am told server is basically pulling in more power then the UPS can supply... ****Another ML 370 G5 with similar spec.s has no issues, its well protected withe same UPS model and doesn't go off* in any of the power interruptions *What I have tried:* 1. APC PowerChute software for managing the UPS doesn't options for changing power settings, i.e supply volatge and power to the server 2. I have looked for that power option to select Balanced power mode, assuming its on high performance and which makes the server require higher power (from Windows server) What should I do to ensure the server is protected? Hey skunks Got this challenge where someone wants to know how many his songs are played and what times on a certain media on radio or tv. How would I achieve this? A probable ideology would be to have a TV card then tune into the system, generate the signature of the content he wants to monitor on the station and have the media signal fed into the signature comparison tool (like the way Shazam does it). Thats would be my approach but I dont know of any such integration.. Pointer and ideas are welcome. Rgds ./TheMburu -- Conservatism is the adherence to the old tried against the new untried.

Problem extending linux /var partition

Hi Guys, One of my web server runs ubuntu server 10.10. I installed it on a 200GB harddisk and assigned /var 70GB but now seems to be full, anyone know whether i can mount a 1TB external harddisk on var and manage to extend the space to 1070GB, i have tried using LVM in vain.

Skunks, I have the above laptop having these specs:- Processor Duo core 2.13Ghz(AMD),Memory 4096MB, Hard Disk 320GB, Bios Phoenix Version 1.70, EC Version 1.3 It was exceptionally slow , I uninstalled most of the software's, stopped all the unnecessary start up programs yet it was slow.I have installed a new Windows 7 OS only. It doesn't seem to be overheating. Has anybody had an issue like this. The laptop is still under warranty. Gate Keeper

As I write this the Kenya Red Cross is organizing the tech event dubbed Random Hacks of Kindness. Developers from all over Kenya are presenting ideas on using technology in humanitarian situations. Taking place at Keny Red Cross offices. Dr Ndemo opening the judging session emphasized the need for developers to think commercially in order for them to have the incentive to stay the course. Most applications are very socially oriented, perhaps representing our social reality. What's amazing is the fact that these hackathons and developer forums are becoming an increasing aspect of youth culture in universities and colleges. Remember most developers ago are say 19 years old now were 14 years old when the undersea cable discussions started. What is evident is that these developers need a lot of mentoring and this where we can all come in. The issue of mentoring needs a broad discussion. It was fresh to see a whole new bunch of techies with a different perspective. At this stage the developer community is doing what it can. Many of them worked the weekend to prepare. Once this becomes part of the youth culture, even for a few, opportunity is created. This is kind of techie week in Kenya with Nokia Summit last week, the 4c challenge meeting last Friday, the pivot east and the outsourcing summit this week starting tomorrow. Although the judging is still under way, I must say a Sunday afternoon well spent. Fellow Geeks & Geekreses, Something interesting has been happening on my (cheap)phone lately. Each time I'm beyond the reach of my service provider(Safaricom), my phone automatically connects to another network(Orange). Please note that it doesn't display 'Orange' on my screen but rather the normal 'Safaricom'. The reason why I discovered it had switched to the Orange network was because I did some serious 'low-level' Android tinkering only to find an error that read, 'The network you selected(Orange) is out of reach' . Anybody here knows whether we have such a thing as 'domestic roaming' in Kenya or is my (cheap)phone just being mischievous? :) -- Kind Regards, Moses Muya.
