Airtel Bundle used before I could start using

Hi Guys, I know I have seen some ranting before about Airtel data bundles being slashed immediately after purchase, did anyone finally get a solution to the problem? I bought a 1.5GB bundle and checked my balance after about 30seconds of purchase, it gave me a balance of 629MB. Not to mention being a new handset I had not even setup the data on the phone. After a call to their call center, they asked me to check whether I had started applications that were consuming my data very fast. I am not aware of their 'super fast' speeds that can consume 871MB in a minute but my friendly email to their support center only got an auto-reply that my issue would be attended to in 24hours. This is the third day for starters. Moses.

David Burgess founded Range Networks, which has a product, OpenBTS, which we think is ideal as a low-cost, low power (and solar power!) GSM base station. OpenBTS is open-sourced, so if iHub members could get a development kit then they could experiment with the software... Customer support toll free lines

Am just curious but why is it that other than the telco's no other service providers in Kenya have a toll free number? And by service providers am talking about Banks, KRA, ISP's, Kenya power you name it. I believe (I might be wrong) that they should be mandated to have a toll free number esp If they are going to put you on hold for n minutes at your own expense. Worse still is when you run out of airtime in the middle of your problem being sorted out they dont even have the courtesy to call you back even though they already asked for your phone number. -Billy

I also agree that Microsoft surface <http://www.microsoft.com/Surface/en-US>is going to change the tablet arena. Especially the surface with Win 8 Pro (it can apparently run all Windows 7 apps). Android missed the opportunity to make an impact in that field. However, I fail to see how Nokia would ride on Surface success given that it's a Microsoft hardware and software. As for the mobile, and I could be wrong here, Nokia will still have to compete against the likes of HTC which also manufacture brilliant phones on Windows software platform. Any advice on the location, courses et al would be appreciated. My key queries are: 1. What is the best location to start with, that has a desperate need and cost effective to manage, get trainers, facilities and other resources 2. Lately, my phone clock resets to the CURRENT time, even after a MANUAL change - say 15minutes ahead. Anyone else experiencing this? Before the "china-phone-lockdown", the clock retained the manually set time - ahead or behind, and never changed. After the china-phone-lockdown, the clock syncs every so often - I've found it happens after about 3 minutes AFTER a MANUAL setting. NO, my phone does NOT have an AUTO-SYNC feature (yes, it's THAT old, the manufacturer doesn't even exist anymore). Those who know much, much more, is this a feature that can be implemented by the network - OTA maybe?

Hello Curious, anyone here willing to share how Safaricom cloud is setup? I mean I tried googling and I can't find much technical information other than the normal crap that appear on business publication. For example, do they use xen for vitualization? What can be adjusted on the console, CPU, RAM, storage ? Is the storage local or shared? For example on EC2, you can set up a VM with storage on SAN or local to the instance? You able to change the firewall? Do you have ability to choose any distribution? For example, on EC2, one can choose go with either RedHat, Ubuntu or even export a local installation as EMI Anyway, I guess I asking for a technical introduction to Safaricom cloud. My reasoning is that it will take just one incident for my sibling in school to die from smoke/fire, just one, and they are gone forever. Radio Network Mapping & Planning

Hey guys/guyettes, Working on my final year university project and would like to know if I am furiously trying to re-invent the wheel. I would like to use aerial photos/satellite images in the planning, mapping, optimizing and construction of radio communication networks. So that using remote sensed data (Aerial photos, satellite pics, LIDAR etc) the ground profile can be accurately modeled and the whole network designed without having to put boots on the ground. This could be applied in WIMAX, 3G, LTE, or even DVB-T2 transmission stations. I am biased towards Aerial Photos/photogrammetry seeing as It requires less tech and achieves good results. I also think (have no actual evidence) it is cheaper of all the stated methods in terms of temporal and spatial resolution. My predicament is I do not know what is currently used. It is perfectly possible that what I have described is precisely what is done. Any techies on the list who work on the network planning side of telcos or independent contractors who can point me in the right direction or give me contacts of someone to talk to? -- Regards, Mark Mwangi markmwangi.me.ke

my (not so merry) dev-experience with pesapal

I'll be blunt... for a dev, pesapal integration is steeper than other (less established) payment gateways in other countries (at least Egypt & SA where integration is at per with paypal or moneybookers). It has its good sides... integration to all mobile money services in kenya, co-op, visa and mastercard!! whoa!! plus, it uses Oauth by default (or by force. no other option :-D)!! Interestingly... pesapal is just KES (so much that you never specify the currency you want to work with anywhere. Its just assumed to be KES, all the time. weird... never seen that before with the gateways i've worked with. I thought financial guys liked to be very explicit with their systems ) I tried to contact someone to have at least one issue fix (the first one, below)... but I got a very PR response. Moving along... Issue 1: The PHP documentation has very, VERY... very wrong code at some point, and its apparently been like that for months (a collegue argues since the beginning of pesapal). Though the code is PHP, it uses a request object available only in javascript (xmlHttpRequest). Check out the last two pages of the PDF for intergration using PHP... another collegue think its all part of a grand scheme to have people contact pesapal for help (and get billed for the assistance. Biz calls it "creating a need in the market") --> Solution: Update the darn code.... ask for my own code if you have to. Its only a small part of the sample code that is off. Its probably turned many potential customers to ipay... or some other gateway in the region __________________________________ Issue 2: PesaPal's code needs an urgent bugfix... Well... using pesapal's own sample code from their dev resources, amounts are posted to pesapal in the form "1,234.56". Note the comma "thousands-separator". Unfortunately, pesapal uses PHP (its a bad language. everyone knows that)... & one interesting thing is how php parses numbers. Basically, php parses numbers by the digit, stopping when it encounters a non-numeric value. To php, "345abceefg" is parsed to the number "345" .... and "1,234.56" is parsed to just "1" Since pesapal deals with finances, it must be very robust, and fail when it sees something like "345abc" instead of saying that the value is "345". Kept saying my "3,453.00" amount was just 3 bob. SOLUTION: if ( is_numeric($amount) === false ) { // FAIL, or THOW NEW EXCEPTION } .... and that's it. (i said pesapal uses php coz i think its the only language that parses numbers like that, AFAIK) __________________________________ Issue 3: It needs to be simpler.... Why the heck do I need to build some XML string, and post it.... it doesn't make the post any lighter, or anymore secure, or make anymore sense. It makes the request heavier with that XML envelope, and makes the whole thing prone to mistakes e.g. if I make a typo somewhere (which will be tricky to find in that XML mess)... come on! let me just post the payment details directly!! wtf!! and add some common API features.....pesapal has been around for so many years... but no new features! devs like new features! in my eyes, pesapal is still wearing granny undies as far as i'm concerned.. read the moneybookers PDFs for instance... cool stuf (i'll rarely use), but cool! basically... dont get too comfortable... evolve. __________________________________ Issue 4: No IPN (Instant Payment Notification). Even m-pesa has this (email me if you want the PDFs for m-pesa's IPN. It calls a URL on ur server when a payment comes in) .... back to the point: With no IPN, you're left with no choice but to have a cron-job regularly running to check the status of all pending payments you might have. The problem: 1) Increased server requirements: Not all hosts allow for cron-jobs, and many devs out there are pretty lazy and dont feel like they're being paid enough to even think about putting in the extra effort. 2) Increased costs on hosting, on both pesapal and its clients: In the event of mpesa/visa delays, my cronjob will make many useless requests to pesapal for my pending payments. These useless requests guzzle-up server and bandwidth resources on both my server and pesapal's. Its worse for pesapal, because the payment plugin I've built could run on 10 or 50 servers, and their cumulative hits would be hard on pesapal (think DenialOfService) 3) Increased code complexity: I now need to add a few fields to store pesapal's tracking ID, and keep track of pending payments, and do other bla bla bla. I'm not getting paid extra btw. My plugin is doing a lot of magic to work now... so much that it could star in a harry porter movie! (... yeah, nice joke :-D. twitting) -->SOLUTION: pesapal should build an IPN thingy, so some data is posted to a URL i provide only when the status of a payment changes. Will save pesapal a lot! they just dont know it! Reduced server & bandwidth load, increased ease-of-use of pesapal's API (i.e. more customers) .... I actually dont use a cronjob btw. My code aggresively makes repeated and consecutive requests to pesapal until the status of a payment changes. The script does this by using sockets to "call itself" whenever a payment is still pending. Too grumpy for effing cronjobs... so if my plugin proves too popular, pesapal could be DoS'd... and I'd probably feel very proud about that! (Cheers... your friendly neighbourhood script kiddie)

SMTP Unable to receive mail

Hello skunks, My SMTP server hosted at safaricom has not been receiving mail for the past 4 weeks. Doing an email trace, I get:"Please turn on SMTP Authentication in your mail client. smtp02.safaricombusiness.co.ke [41.203.208.120]:32221 is not permitted to relay through this server without authentication." Am neither receiving on webmail or client. Any pointers to this? Safaricom seems at a loss of what to do to solve this issue.

Images have been released of Kenya Army in Somalia. I noticed that they are using the M4A1 Carbine, which used to be a great weapon in Counter Strike. The weapon used to be a good counter terrorist weapon in Counter Strike, loved it better than the AK 47. It was more accurate with lesser recoil and a great rate of continuous fire. We had vibrant discussions and very valuable feedback on the draft report and great recommendations and proposals for way forward for not only the study, but the general direction this initiative should take. I wish to thank TESPOK, CCK, Kenya ICT board and UNESCO for the concrete commitments made, ranging from supporting various stakeholder discussions/meetings to continue discussions on possible legal and regulatory framework for internet intermediaries, to support for capacity building (internet law) and a dedicated portal for continued discussions. Special thanks to Dr. Bitange Ndemo for hosting the meeting We will share the meeting report, recommendations and way forward as well as well as the revised research report. STK support is not supported in WP7.5 but vendors like Nokia added support (which means not all vendors have a workaround). I don't consider my initial post as misleading. Try using mysql group_concat and group by on the client_product table. Listers, The Internet Society Kenya Chapter will be coordinating the local remote hubs, this is an appeal to our colleagues in Universities or any interested institutions who might be in a position to set up the hubs to pass the message to interested participants within their communities. People can watch the webcast together and send questions (via text or video) that will be answered by panelists in IGF. In addition, hub organizers can hold debates to discuss the themes introduced at the IGF from their local perspective. There are several advantages in creating a hub: - it helps to raise awareness about Internet Governance issues; - it fosters networking among participants and community building; - and it encourages follow-up activities. How to organize a hub? The requirements are very simple: - A room or auditorium. It can be held in a university classroom or any other convenient place; - A computer with a broadband Internet connection and a projector equipment, to enable the hub participants to watch the webcast ; - A hub moderator, who will plan the dynamics of the local discussions as well as transmit the hub participants’ questions or comments to the IGF through the remote participation channels; - A general call in lists, forums etc, to invite the interested local community. Debian 6.0.6 64-bit Install on Proliant ML110 G7

When installing Debian 6.0.6 64bit after the option to boot using DVD/CD all I get is a blank black screen with a blinking white cursor. I also have a DVD for Debian 5.0 32bit and when I try that the installer runs well. Also checked it with 32bit versions of Windows Server 2003 & Ubuntu Server 9 and can at least get to the installation menu. What could be causing this to happen with the 64bit installer?
