Hi all, I have two ISPs access Kenya and JTL both providing Internet but access Kenya provides Email services too. At the office there is a server which fetches the emails from the the Email server at Access Kenya and users use mail clients to access the mails. Hi Skunks, I am wondering what applications others might be using as mailing/distribution lists on the windows platform.I was investigating Google groups but it requires one to sign in with a Gmail account to read mails on the list .Has anyone had any luck with other applications that will allow all subscribed users to also read the list irrespective of their email address domains? Hi, Have anybody tried to search through Google something that was discussed here? Nothing shows up, which lead me to suspect it's not archived publicly. I do purge my mailing list mails to clean my mailbox - subscribed to over 11 mailing list, so get messy petty fast - and always assume its out there if I need to refer to it. Worked well with other mailing list, but not this one. Muriithi.

IEBC API implementation

Hi skunks! Some pals and I have "consumed" (as a .NET friends would say) the IEBC API with http://wenyenchi.co.ke/mobile Its an early prototype... a sneak preview for anyone who is interested. We optimised it for mobile as much as we could. We kept it light by using leaflet mapping (which uses openStreetMap data) over google maps, and avoided the use of any JS/CSS frameworks by labouring away by writing our own JS code. We're also thinking of caching data on localstorage... our next milestone. I also have a cool template for tablet lovers, which will be the "mpango-wa-kando" milestone to that other milestone. Anyways... tinker away with it. There's a page for quick feedbacks somewhere in there too. Oh... if data is inaccurate/missing (like mandera county), it coz the API appears to be returning inconsistent data only is some **rare* *occasions. But of course, the hardworking techies at IEBC (or Google) will that sorted out soon. Cheers!

HI, As a hobby project I would like to build a digital PABX using asterisk and a Safaricom line. I have a spare computer that I would like to use for this purpose. Has anyone done this before? I need pointers specifically on how to build the interface between the SIM card, computer and my small network at home. What hardware did you use to hold the SIM card and does it have a standard ethernet port to connect it to my 'digital PABX'? My end objective is to have the set up this way: Incoming calls -> Asterisk box -> Calls routed to softphones installed on the computers -> Me receiving calls and saying "M.G customer care. Skunks, I'm having a recurring issue with Websense setup as a Proxy. The general issue is that occasionally it fails to identify the Distinguished name of a user from the Active Directory which results in a user attempting to browse being allocated the default (the most restrictive). This results in numerous calls to I.T helpdesk by very unhappy internal customers. Is there anyone who has had this issue with websense and how did you resolve it? Hi All, I urgently need a PCIe adapter (the one that gives you 3 PCI slots) for a HP proliant DL380p Gen 8 server. This is the slot thats numbered 2 on the rear view on the spec sheet at http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/14212_na/14212_na.pdf Please let me know if you can supply it asap or if you know anyone who can supply it. I was banking on the same adapter for the DL380p Gen7 but apparently they are not the same in size! ./Ok3ch

Mike I dont use any other host apart from Bluehost. And sasahost. If you want reliability choose tgem. But there was an issue with cms WordPress to be precise. Sim Card Registration Process Flaw

I was at Safcom offices to register a sim card earlier today and I feel there is a flaw with the process. A guy came in and said he wants to register his brother's number. All he had with him was the brothers phone number and ID number and he was able to register the phone. Mind you, he didnt have the *physical** *ID Number. He was reading it from the phone. With the easy access to people's ID numbers and other details right now I fear crooks can use this route to register phone numbers to unsuspecting citizens. Also, CCK should come up with a way through which users can confirm which phone numbers are registered to their ID.

Hi, This weekend I escorted a friend to board a bus to Mombasa. I was really impressed that nowadays buses to Mombasa have free WiFi on their buses. My friend actually owns a laptop and she assures me the internet was stable all through the journey and had great download speed. I think Mombasa Raha has really pulled up their socks. Tourists really loved the idea and all the buses that have free WiFi were booked. I wonder when will such services offered on Buses heading to Western... HEHEHE. LOL Cheers...

A week of Africa Eric Schmidt's assessment of Africa

Here's a post that Eric Schmidt made after visiting Africa last week. I think it is a worthwhile read. A Week of Africa After a week of business meetings in the cities of sub-saharan africa, we can surely say three things are new for the continent: a) the despotic leadership in Africa from the 1970s and 1980 is in decline, replaced by younger and more democratic leaders b) a huge youth demographic boom is underway, with a majority of the population of 25, or even under 20 c) mobile phones are everywhere, and the Internet in Africa will be primarily a mobile one Many of the older problems are still severe, including a lack of electric power, the general trend of rural to urban migration, and pervasive corruption. Every country we visited had an internal security problem, or a significant border problem, and the elites are sheltered from this pervasive concern behind guarded walls, hotels and restaurants with gates and security checks, and ubiquitous guards. I try to imagine what the US would be if we had the types of security problems in Africa.. how would WE deal with such threats? Connectivity is much more important for security than many analysts think. Societies who are not connected lack opposing viewpoints and are much more subject to easy radicalization. The virtue of having more connectivity is that people will have more choices, and more choices lead a better understanding of the value to go to school, the need to treat women equally, the choice to not demonize others, etc. Nairobi has emerged as a serious tech hub and may become the African leader. A combination of relatively stable politics, the British legal system, and a benign climate seem to attract a significant share of foreign investment. Incubators are hosting potential solutions to many problems, including connecting M-Pesa (their mobile money solution on simple phones using SMS) with payment systems for local stores. If they manage to get through the upcoming March elections without significant conflict, they will grow quickly. Rwanda is a jewel with a terrible past. High economic growth and the development of a significant middle class is threatened by the withdrawal of aid due to UN complaints over the Congo. Rwanda feels like Singapore, an island inside of Africa whose small size allows great focus and a dynamic, stable government. A visit to the Genocide Museum in Kigali, and a trip to the Volcanic National Park where eight groups of eight can trek to see the gorillas made famous by Diana Fossey, are well worth it. Gorilla treks are also available through Uganda and the Congo, over the same mountains. After fifty years of war, South Sudan is the worlds newest country. In a country where every issue is an urgent one, mobile networks can unify a poor country with isolated villages, significant flooding in the rainy season, and the constant threat of attacks from rebels from the north. A courageous group, the Satellite Sentinel project. uses satellite data and other sources to document ethnic cleansing in remote areas of Sudan (the northern Sudan) and serve as a record of the terrible ongoing violence against innocents. Chad is a poor petro-state, with a long history of conflict and one pipeline and one fiber link. Africa has submarine fiber cables on the west and eastern side. Landlocked countries are at the mercy of their neighbors, and all have learned that competition with multiple fiber connections from differing borders dramatically reduces costs. Chad like some others, has determined that future spectrum should not be auctioned as that only increases the eventual mobile costs and are simply allocating it to a set of competitive carriers. Less than 1% of Chad has electricity. Nigeria, known as a land of oil corruption and the ubiquitous 419 email scams, is the biggest surprise to a first time visitor. Nigerians are entrepreneurial, stylish, educated, and have the belief that their country can emerge as the next Brazil. With 170 million citizens, and a record breaking eleven years of civilian elected government, the compound growth and the shared memory of real internal conflict almost guarantees their short term success. Future growth of Nigeria should help with its international image problem, as the real story of its success gets out. The emergent model of the African internet is a set of competitive fiber suppliers to the capital, a set of fiber rings owned by local telco's, and 3G and 4G networks. Some of the countries are late with licensing plans for 3G and 4G, a costly delay for countries that have very little residential broadband. Solar charging can help with the power needs of handsets, but the electricity needs to be more reliable or costly backup systems will be built at each tower. Many of these countries have telecommunications as a major contributor to their GPD (Cote d'Ivory is about 12%) and even Somalia, which we did not visit this time, has a profitable competitive telecommunications industry.. the most profitable legal industry in that country. Some countries are reluctant to turn on the data portion of their telecommunications industry, another costly delay to their future digital commerce, education and entertainment industries. Many Africans will be last, unfortunately, to be connected to the rest of us. For them, the best short term outcome will be feature phones (inexpensive voice and SMS phones) and a private network of microSD cards that can be traded behind oppressive authorities to get information in and out of trapped, occupied and remote locations. Information is power, and more information means more choices. Documenting abuses, getting pressure from outside to fix real problems, and solving illiteracy are just a few functions of even the most limited of feature phones. The demographic dividend in Africa of young people is their greatest hope, in my opinion. Today high rates of unemployment show an economy underperforming to its true potential. This new generation expects more, and will use mobile computing to get it. Optimism is appropriate for Africa, as the people we met will do much more with less than we can imagine, and the devices and systems built in the first world will be used in the most creative ways in the emerging new world of Africa. -- Kind regards, Alex Nyika

A popular trend is to get up at 4am and get some work done before the day’s craziness begins. Others like *going* to bed at 4am. At the gist of all this is avoiding distractions. But you could just lock the door, what’s so special about the night? I think it boils down to three things: the maker’s schedule, the sleepy brain and bright computer screens. *The maker’s schedule* Paul Graham <http://paulgraham.com/> wrote about the maker’s schedule<http://www.paulgraham.com/makersschedule.html> in 2009 – basically that there are two types of schedules in this world (primarily?). The traditional manager’s schedule where your day is cut up into hours and a ten minute distraction costs you, at most, an hour’s worth of time. We are not some race of super humans. Even programmers feel more alert during the day. Why then do we perform our most mentally complex work work when the brain wants to sleep and we do simpler tasks when our brain is at its sharpest and brightest? Because being tired makes us better coders. Similar to the ballmer peak, being tired can make us focus better simply because when your brain is tired it *has* to focus! There isn’t enough left-over brainpower to afford losing concentration. I seem to get the least work done right after drinking too much tea or having a poorly timed energy drink<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_drink>. Makes me hyperactive and one second I’m checking twitter, the next I’m looking at hacker news and I just seem to be buzzing all over the place.. You’d think I’d work better – so much energy, so much infinite overclocked brainpower. But instead I keep tripping over myself because I can’t focus for more than two seconds at a time. Conversely, when I’m slightly tired, I just plomp my arse down and *code*. With a slightly tired brain I can code for hours and hours without even thinking about checking twitter or facebook. It’s like the internet stops existing. I feel like this holds true for most programmers out there. We have too much brainpower for approximately 80 percent of the tasks we work on – face it, writing that one juicy algorithm, requires ten times as much code to produce an environment in which it can run. Even if you’re doing the most advanced machine learning (or something) imaginable, a lot of the work is simply cleaning up the data and presenting results in a lovely manner. And when your brain isn’t working at full capacity it looks for something to do. Being tired makes you dumb enough that the task at hand is enough. *Bright computer screens* This one is pretty simple. Keep staring at a bright source of light in the evening and your sleep cycle <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circadian_rhythm> gets delayed. You forget to be tired until 3am. Then you wake up at 11am and when the evening rolls around you simply aren’t tired because hey, you’ve only been up since 11am! Given enough iterations this can essentially drag you into a different timezone. What’s more interesting is that it doesn’t seem to keep rolling, once you get into that equilibrium of going to bed between 3am and 4am you tend to stay there. Forefront Tmg 2010 proxy authentication‏

Hi Skunks, I have a Forefront TMG 2010 Proxy server and a domain controller. I have added a machine (codec) in the internal network that is supposed to authenticate to a server on a public ip. I have opened all the necessary ports and can confirm they are open on the log files. The problem is the machine does not authenticate to the server and has no web proxy capabilities. I have also allowed all traffic from the codec's ip by adding an inbound and outbound rule but doesn't work. Kindly assist on how i would allow this authentication on the Forefront Tmg.
