Lufthansa has set up a new service named MySkyStatus that automatically posts the current position of your flight to Twitter or Facebook so your friends can follow your travels (and your friends living in those cities can look up!). Typical status updates read “flying over San Francisco Intl, California 94030, USA on United Airlines” or “flying over Grantsville, UT 84029, USA on United Airlines”. It seems the system posts the flight’s position around once per hour, pulling info from a database of flight information. *Here’s the really smart bit:* Clicking the link in the update, of course, directs you to the Lufthansa MySkyStatus page with a Google Map of the flight’s position, meaning that Lufthansa is getting free social media promotion from people travelling on all airlines. I'm stuck on a challenging problem and I need your collective intelligence. This isn't a specific problem but a general one I've seen in many situations. I'll try and make the problem description as generic as possible so it can apply to a wide variety of situations. I have a solution in mind but I'm not sure it works. To prevent creating bias (for or against), I won't discuss my solution until after others put forth theirs. Problem Description: ================ There are three parties involved, let's call them A, B and C - A contacts B with a message for C - A pays both B and C for successful delivery of the message How does A determine the following: - that B delivered the message to C - that C received the message from B Assumptions: ========== - To make the problem as general as possible, let's assume all communication between the parties happens only via SMS - The trustworthiness of B and C cannot be determined, i.e. don't assume they will honestly relay the facts to each other or to A - B can decide to scam C, or collude with C to scam A, or scam both C and A - C can decide to scam B, or collude with B to scam A, or scam both B and A What's the community's cleverness on this one? saidi

While reading further about this issue of KPLC transmitting data over power lines, I come across this article. http://www.ohgizmo.com/2009/01/12/ces-2009-data-over-power-lines-makes-netw… which basically talks (and shows some cool images) of transmitting data domestically over power lines. Im just thinking, if someone moneyed enough got these things en masse, and marketed them affordably, wouldnt they be a good substitute to the whole "networking" charade for many homes and offices? Where im i getting this wrong?

Guardin against ATM thefts

I believe many of us have heard of someone who was forced by thugs to go to an ATM and withdraw cash. So an idea popped. Why can't banks issue atleast 2 PINs per ATM card. If a person is forced to withdraw cash then they can use the second (distress) PIN. This PIN will let the system display that the person only has a fraction of the amount in his/her account. Once that PIN has been used, using the first PIN will not display the correct amount in the account until the person visits one of the bank's branch. This way thugs only get a fraction of the original amount. Thugs would know that a person has 2 PINs but it's a 50/50 gamble on whether they will use the right PIN. Thugs may force the person to give up his/her 2 PINs. If they use the second PIN there is no way of knowing the true amount in the person's account even if they used the first PIN. If they used the first PIN before the second PIN then it's a lucky day for the thugs. Whether use of the second PIN should generate a distress call is another issue. Has anyone boarded the new smart buses yet.. i bordeded thm once and i think the concept is good, the fares are reasonalble the software is great but the hardware is letting them down..i thinnk their card readers should be improved..they take forever to scan so the conductor has to really struggle and i mean physically force the card into the reader.....what do you guys think

The initial phase of the CAB will take place in Cameroon, the Central African Republic and Chad, where the connectivity component of the project will leverage the existing fibre-optic network laid along the Chad-Cameroon oil pipeline to form the core CAB network and support the deployment of interconnected networks to establish a regional cable infrastructure. Aside from the connectivity aims of the CAB, other components include development of e-government, strengthening of regulatory frameworks and assistance in restructuring government telecoms institutions with the aim of liberalising markets. The World Bank said in a statement that central African countries currently offer the worst quality and most expensive internet service in the continent. Eight additional countries are eligible to take part in the CAB, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, The Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Niger, Nigeria, Sao Tome & Principe and Sudan. The project, which is being supported by a partnership between the World Bank and the African Development Bank, is expected to achieve its initial aims in Cameroon, the Central African Republic and Chad by 2016, but as its scope widens it is expected to run for ten years, with total investment reaching around USD215 million. The CAB aims to raise USD98 million from the private sector, with help from the International Finance Corporation. Contribution for the week. A novice view. ( Platform WinXP pro ) Short History : A while back when studying C# for the Mbyte Meter project, I came across Windows Management Instrumentation. WMI is something very new to me and was the best suited API for my project. Understanding it is a bit complex but last evening, after weeks of struggling, I managed a break through. There are many on the net who have not been able to succeed with this below. A potential future project came to my mind about creating an automatic Ip address, Gateway and DNS changer tool. This tool will take in set paramenters and the user just has to select the site, activate profile they are on and work away! The code below is for IP address only, but at a much later stage full development will take place. // WMI has classes that assist you interact with hardware on your laptop/desktop/server. In the case of Network Adapters, WMI provides 3 classes. One that is of importance is Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration . It has various methods and properties and of use is the EnableStatic Method. Ok, since we did not suceed on the dream team webite, I'd like to list very briefly *my* *personal time on-going* *to future projects* over into the next 12 months, though not in any sequence and depends on many things. *- CDN Project:* Tentative date to go live is 1st week december. ( Began Sept 2008-Ongoing ) - Update : Awaiting bandwidth from a provider, delays are affecting further realtime testing and QOS placements. *If successful, will be offered to ventures. *- Web Portal Project:* ( 1- began July, not completed ) 3 portals, out of which 2 are classified. Nation has already beaten us to an online classified, however it should be ready for competition. Already learning about SEOs etc. *If successful, will be offered to ventures. *- Mbytetometer* - ( Began August 2009- not completed. Project Name credit : Washington ) A free windows based utility tool to allow for measurement and logging of data volumes used. A complete prototype will be offered for certification towards implementating a standard. Alex had offered to assist in getting certification which is a huge help. Conrad has also offered to help. ( Update 1 : Am studying WMI so as to use it as a query and logging api. Not much study material is available on WMI except for SDK. Seems VB.net is easier while c# is a bit more complicated on WMI ) A complete project will be offered to community at some stage. *- Revival of my Voip project *. * Will see if time allows. *If successful, will be offered to ventures. While perusing their design wiki I was impressed with the level of thought and detail given to almost all possible user interactions. Safcom Huawei E220 modem locked

Hi guys, I know I have seen this talk of unlocking modems but did not pay much attention to it as mine was already unlocked ie as indicated above it is Safcom modem but I use my ZAIN line to browse in it using Linux. Now after a long time I decided to give it a try in windoze I tried all tweaks I could think of mpaka it connected but could not exchange data, Later when I switched to Linux I tried connecting but the modem did not connect again, I tried all tweaks again but could not connect but when I switch the lines and use a Safcom sim card I can connect and browse perfectly. I would like to go back to re-using my Zain line anyone with ideas or even how to confirm if the Modem probably re-locked itself? -- Conservatism is the adherence to the old tried against the new untried.

Traffic Alert system Project Overview/proposal

I have been thinking of a traffic alert system, which we can implement. I have thought up a brief project overview and proposal which i have attached here. Please feel free to add your own thoughts. What we mainly need to do is determine whether the project is feasible, ie do people really need such a system. Looking forward to your input *Project Overview* TRAFFIC ALERT SYSTEM *Mission and Scope* What problem does this project address? This project is meant to address the problems associated with traffic flow in Nairobi and other African cities. This is by sms alerts of traffic conditions on the roads. What is the goal of this project? To reduce the amount of time spent by drivers/passengers on the road by enabling feeding them with info which enables them choose alternative travel time/ alternative roads What is the scope of this project? The system will get input from several points on a road to a central server. The input will be flow of traffic at the point of the road, e.g. At X roundabout flow is approximately 2 kph. The flow ill be mapped on to consecutive points of the road, such that for road Y, flow ill be represented as : 5, 7, 20, 50 , 30, 10, 5 , 60 (kph) from the beginning point to end point. By using the known distance of the road, the system can calculate average travel time e.g. [5, 7, 20, 50 , 30, 10, 5 , 60 (kph)], [10,15,20,25,32,44, 50, 55 (mins)] in increasing minutes from starting point to end point; for our example, the project would take 55 minutes. For distances between points, subtract your starting point from end point. The input will rely on one of the following, amongst other potential suggestions: - Speed Camera feeds/speed radar which takes the average speed of vehicles passing through a certain point and transmits it to a central point. - Use of mobile phone concentration in an area and rate of switch from one BTS to another. This would require writing of appropriate algorithms that ensure that only mobile phones on a road are considered, and interference from pedestrians or mobs on a road are ignored. It would also require support of a mobile telco. - Physical inputs from hired humans or volunteers who transmit traffic conditions to a central room. Other humans at the central room analyse the traffic and come up with require information. This method is inefficient, unreliable and prone to human error and inconsistency. - Use of satellite ?? (beyond our scope?) What development methodology is being used? ?? Where should a new team member start? A new member can join the development process at any stage. It is recommended that they have background info though. *Status* The project is currently in the proposal/requirements gathering stage. *Project Proposal* *Project Information* *Project:*TRAFFIC ALERT SYSTEM*Project Time-frame:*01/10/09 - ?*Summary:*A project meant to help travellers predict their ETA and plan their journeys by passing prevailing traffic conditions to them.*Attached Worksheets:*Project Overview*Related Documents:*Project Plan *Process impact:* This proposal, along with drafts of related documents, will be used by skunks to determine whether or not to approve work on this project. A clear and precise project plan helps set expectations that will be used later to evaluate the success of the project. *Background and Motivation* TODO: Replace the example text below with text that describes your project. What are the needs or problems that you are trying to address? Why do these needs (still) exist? Why are these problems worth solving? Who is the customer? Write 2-4 paragraphs. What is the setting and history behind this project? Traffic on roads leading to Nairobi City Centre has been characterised with traffic jams. The traffic jams are no longer restricted to peak times only, but occur at any time of the day, and with varying degree. Radio stations have been having traffic alerts, but this give little insight and sketchy information. Drivers and passengers may need more detailed information. What is the problem to be addressed? Traffic jams can range from less than a kilometre to many kilometres. Thus time taken on a journey can range from minutes to several hours for the same distance. By having information on real time traffic, travellers can leave earlier, postpone appointments or cancel journeys. What are some current approaches to this problem? Traffic alerts are broadcast over FM radio at peak hours. In several cities, users are able to access real traffic information via Google Maps. Why is this problem worth solving or worth solving better? Travellers should be able to have detailed information such that they are able to visualise exact traffic flow on their roads and approximate how long it would take to travel. They can also prioritise their travel arrangements based on this info. How will this product be better than previous approaches? Traffic alerts will give the average speed of traffic at sections of a road, e.g. Globe, Parklands, Pangani round about, Muthaiga round about etc for Thika Road; GPO roundabout, Kobil Round About, Stadium Round about, Capital centre for Mombasa Road. This is better than saying “Mombasa road is busy and slow”. By approximating journey times, travellers will make appropriate decisions on how to travel, e.g. Arrange to be picked up if their ETA is late at night on public transport, postpone their travel if traffic flow is approximately 0kph maybe due to an accident. Where is there more information on this problem? There is a traffic alert system in Lagos, Nigeria which relies on human generated data. This is done by a group of motorcycle riders who move from point to point analysing traffic. *Goal* *What is the goal of this project?* *TIP: This should be relatively short since you can reference terms defined above.* *This project will give real time traffic conditions on a road enabling prediction od travel times and help in travel arrangement..* *What are the defining features and benefits of this product?* - Real time traffic alerts including average traffic speed and journey times - All users need is a mobile phone, not necessarily a smart phone or low end phone. Alerts will be transmitted via SMS alerts. This can be scaled up to traffic mapping for smart phones and computers. - Generation of income can be done by use or premium rate sms services or/coupled with paid adverts included in sms alert. The service can also be subscription based with twice a day(or other desired frequency) alerts at a given time for a certain road *Scope* TODO: Replace the sample text below with a clear statement of the scope of your project. What are the high-level things that you plan to do, and that you will not do? What are your important simplifying assumptions? Try to guard against reasonable misunderstandings that might arise if you did not explain the scope. It can take the form of a paragraph, bullet list, in/out list, and/or UML context diagram. The focus of the project is a server that collects prevailing traffic information and uses it to map traffic flow on a road. - Provide SMS alerts to any phone detailing traffic flow and Estimated Times of Arrival. - Cheap enough to be used by both Passengers and Drivers over and over again. - Information provided can be integrated into other applications - Information can be important to matatu operators, traffic police *In Scope**Out of Scope*Use of a comparatively inexpensive system to monitor traffic flow e.g cameras, speed radars , human transmission, or anonymous mobile phone triangulationUse of satellite technology to monitor trafficTransmit information via simple SMS alertRequire a java enabled phone or smart phone that allows downloading an application to get traffic feedsOther applications are able to draw information from the systemHighly integrated system that requires extra work to provide information to other systemsEasy to use, one time request or subscription basedRequires an instruction manual to use. Automatic subscription which requires administrator intervention to unsubscribe.High scalability, able to handle a few thousand requests per hourOnly able to provide a fixed number of requests per hourCheap to use, at most Kes 10 per sms. Ongoing road constructions will mean that data gathering points will have to be relocated from time to time What are the main rewards if this project succeeds? 1. The project can be self sustaining from revenue generated from sms/subscription charges. 2. Advertising revenue will result in profitability of the project 3. Better planning travel arrangements for those using city roads. *Project Plan* ************* Continuation of the project to this stage and beyond will be determined by determination of user requirements ie: - Do travellers really need such a system or is it a white elephant. Who thinks they will hack? By the way am interested in seeing (and of course using) this Latitude Z machine from Dell. Apparently it has 2 power buttons, one which offers instant boot to check e-mail, calendar, contacts and the web as, a mode called 'Latitude On.' Hi Guys, I have a small linux/windows network running very well.i have samba running on openSuSE 11.1 in one machine and Windows XP computers can access the non protected samba shares/sections.I have one problem that I am struggling with.I have read some howto's, and searched lists, but can not find an easy solution for this.I would like to implement [homes] or [usershares] for user directories and file storage: When accessing the /users or /homes directory, users would be prompted for a username and password. The user would not need to be login to the Windows OS. That is, I just want a prompt for both username and password when the share is accessed. USB Device Not Recognized

Hi Skunks, I keep getting this pop up "USB Device Not Recognized" at the taskbar. This is despite the fact that all my usb ports are fully functional. I delved into forums and some even advised me to switch off, remove the laptop battery and put it back again but this pop up wont just go away. Disabling the usb ports have equally proved fruitless. Its so disturbing. A friend hinted it might be a virus, though I'm yet to confirm that. Any ideas?

@ David, An SDH frame is transmitted byte-serially i.e 8 bits at a time. One frame lasts for 125 microseconds hence there are 8000 frames per second. The frame structure consists of 9 rows and 270 columns. Doing the maths we get 9x7x8x8000=155520000 bits per sec. i.e 155.52 Mb/s. This is an ITU-T standard (G.707 i think) so anything else is just noise :-)!!! Probably the confusion comes from Mapping the PDH signals; American ANSI standard 1.5,6,45 (T1,T2,T3) or the European ETSI standard 2,34,140 (E1,E3,E4) or the SONET STS signal to the SDH containers. MPEG4 Royalties on Set Top Boxes-Clarification Needed.

I've seen an advert about Set Top Digital boxes and it says they use MPEG-4 as the compression format. A couple of years back I was doing research into audio/video formats as I was developing a playback tool. I came across articles that seem to suggest that if one uses MPEG (and the MP3 family) to compress and distribute content then one has to pay a fee (royalty). The info is sketchy and that's what makes the issue interesting. The above has led to the success of OGG (Vorbis and Theora), which perform equal if not better than the above. I wonder if our media houses are aware of the above, coz it seems their digital content will be compressed with MPEG-4. o_O?

@Net Net, @John Doe.... Guys, wondering on the VLANS and rate limiting first, before we go down MTUs? Ok, I've been out of touch with dist networks for a long while, so am catching up on the technologies in deployment locally. Wimax, Fiber. I assume that they are all using VLANS for circuits and rate limiting applied to set circuit throughputs, am I correct in thinking this? In case of point-point and point to multi-point? And is rate limiting still used to set some part of SLAs? Or have the entire industry headed towards wi-fi broadband concept? Rgds.

Hi Skunktoids, We got this deal from some ISP which I won't name for now, and they tell us that our speeds are 1MBps for both the uplink and downlink, but I highly doubt what they are telling us. Files normally download at a speed of 100kbps on average, and I do not think that that correctly reflects what the ISP is saying. However, I am not an expert on this matters, and that is why I have sought to ask the gurus on the list to shed some light. Attached hereto is a speedtest.net result graphic for more info. Thanks. Paris, September 28, 2009 - Alcatel-Lucent today announced that scientists in Bell Labs, the company's research arm, have set a new optical transmission record of more than 100 Petabits per second.kilometer (equivalent to 100 million Gigabits per second.kilometer). This transmission experiment involved sending the equivalent of 400 DVDs per second over 7,000 kilometers, roughly the distance between Paris and Chicago. This is the highest capacity ever achieved over a transoceanic distance and represents an increase that exceeds that of today's most advanced commercial undersea cables by a factor of ten. To achieve these record-breaking results the Bell Labs researchers made innovative use of new detection techniques and harnessed a diverse array of technologies in modulation, transmission, and signal processing High speed optical transmission is a key component of Alcatel-Lucent's High Leverage NetworkT architecture, key elements of which have already been selected by leading service providers. To achieve these record-breaking results researchers from the Bell Labs facility in Villarceaux, France used 155 lasers, each operating at a different frequency and carrying 100 Gigabits of data per second, to dramatically enhance the performance of standard Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology. "There is no question that this record breaking transmission is a milestone in achieving the network capacity and speeds and a key step forward in satisfying the ongoing explosion in demand," said Gee Rittenhouse, head of Bell Labs Research. "This is a prime example of Bell Labs preeminent research and demonstrates the ability of our researchers to solve complex problems," he explained. The record-breaking figure was derived by multiplying the number of lasers by their 100 Gigabit per second transmission rate and then multiplying the aggregate 15.5 Terabit per second result by the 7000 kilometer distance achieved. The combination of speed and distance expressed in bit per second.kilometers is a standard measure for high speed optical transmission. The transmissions were accomplished over a network whose repeaters, devices used to sustain optical signal strength over long distances, were spaced 90 kilometers apart. This spacing distance is 20% greater than that commonly maintained in such networks. The challenge of maintaining transmission over these distances was significantly heightened in these experiments because of the noise -perturbation of signals- that is introduced as transmission speeds increase. The researchers also increased capacity by interfacing advanced digital signal processors with coherent detection, a new technology that makes it possible to acquire details for a greater number of properties of light than the direct detection method commonly applied in today's systems. Using this technique the researchers were able to effectively increase capacity by increasing the number of light sources introduced into a single fiber yet still separate the light into its constituent colors when it reached its destination. Details of the breakthrough were presented in a research paper that was reviewed in an exclusive and highly-competitive post deadline session of ECOC 2009, a prestigious European optical communications conference. This transmission record is just the latest in a long series of Bell Labs optical networking breakthroughs that have become market-changing solutions and generated substantial growth opportunities for Alcatel-Lucent: the invention of Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM), introduction of non-zero dispersion fiber, 100 Gigabit Ethernet field trials and Differential Phase-Shift Keying (DPSK) at 40 Gigabits per second, the most widely used in 40 Gigabit per second systems worldwide.

Hi all, Just been reading the cisco thread about reading/graphing traffic stats. I'm bogged down with too much and I know FreeBSD can easily provide the answer to everyone's graphing needs. FreeBSD works too well even in bridged mode. Can anyone do a MRTG solution ( 5 minute average graphing, user account access and protocol analyser ) on FreeBSD and market for themselves to those who need the graphing solution? If you are a network admin/edge admin, would you like to have a device in bridged mode ( not transparent in the network but requires an ip ) that will help you graph and perform internet traffic stats which may aslo help you discuss your SLAs with your provider. Hope you all will be able to connect on this one if you have the time, between developer and admin. Just sharing a thot and suggestion with fellow skunks.... Rgds.

Their engineer called me this morning to inform me that they have "listened to my cries" and a policy change has been effected to allow in-band DTMF. I've tested this with my system, which now works with both Zain/Safaricom/Telkom --> Zain. However, this has not been implemented in all their switches, but will be by end of the week so if it still doesn't work from your location, don't despair. Hi list, While on the recent discussion on " web portals and content service provider " and PS Ndemo's response, I've now come to realize something very important. I've also tried to put across the list in kictanet that licensing and regulation should allow flexibilty for those of us who belong in the informal ICT sector etc. However, I've come to a conclusion that there are many of us who are incubating ideas, technologies and solutions towards innovations and the kind. Eg, I've been working on the next generation CDN which some are almost complete. I do not want to be a service provider nor telco etc but do what I do best and move on to other projects. Therefore, I think we should comeup with a site to promote the innovations etc under eg " The Kenyan Dream Tech Factory " where each one with the idea which they have invested, tried and can offer to bigger tech investors who eg have the licenses ( in short summary so as to protect your idea ). I now know big time where some of my innovations or projects over the years have gone wrong and am sharing my experience with you. Suggested work flow: - Register a site - Develop the site - Allow creation of user accounts - Allow any tech individual/small company to put up what they can offer ( ofcourse backed by facts ) - Establish the site as a reference point and find a way to market it to the tech sector. I can get a weak kdn butterfly signal but not adequate to connect.Telkom said they cannot provide adsl service(Livebox). I need atleast 256kbps downlink.Need a service(internet) i can share btn atleast 5 comps. How's the zuku service...anyone tried? Other options?Budget? Please advice.

I know after closing one loophole another one emerges, but that never was a reason to stay static in terms of policy. What I keep wondering and agonizing about is why so many good policies are never taken seriously. Today, good friends, I need to know why we should not be required to register for sim cards. Why do we continue this policy of giving fraudsters such a huge playing field to just buy and dispose after illegal use. Why oh why? Hon Bitange Ndemo and others who have access to the state machinery should know that crime is not only about changing the people at the top but should also avail more resources to them. You would be amazed how easier it would be to solve and track down most of the home based fraudsters out there. Anyone with the goodwill to push this regardless of what safaricom says (for selfish reasons) out there whom we can back up?

Saw this on CNN website earlier. http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/europe/09/23/stockholm.helicopter.heist/i… . Seems someone took of with a lot cash from G4S in Stockholm, then I remembered this case of daylight robbery involve G4S near Yaya yesterday. Do you think they are related and these guys were carrying out a synchronized robbery? I heard they have this machine that defaces currency when at attempted robbery occurs. Do they use then?

The Safaricom Mobile Office Application has been designed to only run on a Minimum screen resolution of 800 X 600 (no idea why) now I have this Mini Laptop that has a display resolution of 1024 X 576 max. Is there any way of running the mobile app on the laptop? The Mini Laptop is on Windows XP professional Much Thanks.

As a global Tier1 IP provider with 1.5Tbps meshed network built on 10G backbones, Tata Communications is one of the world's leading carriers of Internet traffic. Tata Communications is also the number one provider out of Kenya for global internet connectivity to local carriers, service providers and mobile operators *. By building a PoP in Kenya, Tata Communications will be able to offer Internet and other service providers access to one of the most dynamically routed and high performance global IP networks for service delivery. The IP PoP is configured to automatically offer redundant paths for Internet traffic going north towards Europe and southwards to South Africa well as to Asia and India over the SEACOM cable system. Should there be a fiber cut on the route to London, for example, traffic will be diverted through South Africa to ensure that customer services are not disrupted. Besides resilience, service providers purchasing bandwidth from the Kenya PoP will be able to benefit from the higher speeds and direct links offered by the new connection. Previously, in order for service providers in Kenya to offer Internet links to Asia or South Africa, they needed to buy international fiber through a cable network to London, meaning all traffic would be routed through London rather than through a more direct route.
