Hello, Just thinking, Voyager 1 was launched some time in 1977, so by the time I was born it had done some 1451.04 Million Kms, to date its been traveling at 17Kms every sec! meaning by last month it had done some 16445.29 million Kms, so in all my life its traveled 14994.25 million Kms... and all this time its been calling out to any Aliens out there presumably luganda aliens, since Luganda was one of the languages in the Golden record. But again if aliens got hold of it and returned with it expecting the technology that was on board they would be shocked .... 1977 tech vs 2009 ..... just asking, what would you show them .... and would we show them the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva??... For one I would compare for them, hoping they have a sense of hearing, the turn table disks, as they were called, and the DVD as we know it today... the Sony Walkman and the Ipod... Hhhhmmmm ;-), wait I should not believe these things, how can I when am told a star is 10 light years this is like 95,000,000,000,000 Kms away, yet they are some that are more than a 20,000 light years, don't ask for the number, aha meaning the light you see at that moment left its origin more than 20,000 years ago, so if according to the bible/ Koran the earth, and the Universe including light was created like 6000 years ago .... Hi, I am trying to find out if there is a proper/adequate infrastructure for ecommerce in this country. Are there Kenyan ecommerce sites and if so, how do they handle issues relating to electronic payments such as the mode of payment, security etc. How do the companies running the sites collaborate with the financial institutions to receive payments and how are the clients assured of receipt of their purchased goods? Is there appropriate legislation to handle issues arising from this kind of trade. Incase of a problem, are institutions that the customer or the legal entity can consult to resolve these in Kenya. My biggest problem is electronic payments in this discussion. Putting up shopping carts might be easy, but in this beloved country, what electronic payments are possible. Looking for an Intern - July 5th to August 15 - Nairobi, Kenya Yesterday at 9:48pm Dear Friends -- The Children of Kibera Foundation is looking for a college intern to work for us on a project for five or six weeks this summer in Nairobi - July 5th to August 14th It is an unpaid internship, although the foundation will provide the intern with a one-time grant of USD 500 (or the equivalent in Kenyan Shillings), and could help with identifying suitable housing with a host family within the community at Olympic Estate or at a hostel within an easy commute of the project site. The intern will work on phase two of our "KiberaOnline Schools" project whereby our foundation provides computer equipment and sets up a computer lab/classroom for schools that educate Kibera's under-served children. This includes responsibility for basic hardware and software management in a lab with about 15 laptop computers, a printer, and scanner, possibly an internet connection and wireless network. The intern will need a strong set of personal and technical skills to be a manager and a teacher, training adult teachers intensively, as well as high school level teenagers, and little children ages 3 to 8 on how to use the computers for a variety of learning and work purposes. Please let me know if you have any students in mind, perhaps one who is coming to Kenya for the fall and could arrive earlier in the summer or one who is there for a summer course and could stay on longer. Lastly, whoever the intern is, they will not be working alone on this project. They will be working with another intern who is a 2009 graduate of Georgetown University that will be there for six weeks, and will get assistance from our projects coordinator Jeff and the teachers of the school where we are putting up this new lab. I can breathe now.... www.chekelea.com/support and click on LIVE CHAT. pls keep test to a maximum of 10 seconds as I'm the only test operator on it, and if chat queues build up it will route your request to a ticket page. will be online until 530pm. I've to hand over on tue, so will setup staff area test for monday ( to confirm ). learning programming is annoying

this is back! I've moved from books and onto other books. Same story each time : not enough info or same method syntax that really is not what you want. All start with silly hallo world syntaxes that within a chapter or 2 is useless towards writing progs. Eg a good book I read so far ( IMHO ) is visual c# 2008 by John Sharp but by chapter 2 or 3 makes many assumptions. It is amazing how small the code portion becomes if you use correct method syntax and program flow. Why can't book writers use a standard convention of the best ways to write methods, then take it from there. A hallo world method with screen output has no place in this world! %^$%%!!! Any online college or Uni offering a sane way to learn visual c# you could refer me to? Anyone... :-) Rgds.

Safaricom Bambanet (HSDPA Modem)

Is it just me or has anybody else noticed how the speeds immediately drop whenever you queue a series of 'heavy' downloads (~ 2MB @) when using the safaricom modem.? I noticed they drop till they eventually start timing out. They shot back to a consistent ~600 ms when I un-queued the downloads. Whats the most likely explanation for this? regards -Alex

Dead HP Pavilion

Hi guys and gals, Bad start to the long weekend. My HP Pavilion DV6000 just died. I last used it two nights ago and it was fine. When I power on, the LEDs come on but it doesn't attempt to boot, hard drive stays strangely quiet, and the display doesn't seem to get powered. I've tried with an external display as well. I've removed the HDD and backed up my important stuff to another machine. Looks like a HW problem but I don't think it's the mobo. Have tried the memory as well, no joy. Hi all, As you can see below, the task below requires quite a commitment. But we sometime have to make those sacrfifices to get things done. Pending personal finances and time, I've set a commited date of 1st Sept 2009 as the video website date. By whatever means necessary, the plan is to move. The site will be simple and can evolve over time. I may co-host if I can resolve some personal issues etc but the show must go on. You may create your own 1 minute flv video and send. I can post or you can post directly after moderation 24hrs period. Content strictly ICT related such as news, projects, ideas, if you are a solution or service provider etc, programmer, content developer etc. A small overview of content for first 4 months is as follows but not limited to ( if you have the time ) ( pls remember I cannot do this full time so mostly evenings or sat will work ) : Suggested Main program ( I've missed on many who should be here, pls add yourself ): @Josiah, Riyaz and other who founded skunks. @peter I forgot to add the query you will use to import the data, there is a slight difference from the mysql defaults. load data local infile '/path/to/datafile' into table `archives` fields escaped by '\\' terminated by ';' enclosed by '\'' lines terminated by '|^^|' (`from`, `date`, `timezone`, `subject`, `body`); @peter, Here is the SQL code you can use to create your table for this list then you can get the actual data files from Alex. This is just for storage purposes so there are no indices so you will have to create them as you like depending on how you plan to make the script. It also creates the table using InnoDB Engine so you might prefer to use MyISAM or any other you prefer. Now before I post the source code for the Parser, I want to make some few changes on the compilation optimization options coz with the wrong option even though it will still compile there is a bug in three inner loops (I havent bothered fixing) that could cause the loops to corrupt the heap when run at a very high optimized runtime state thereby crushing the progrm as it attempts to escape the string data. In the last few days my Outlook has refused to connect and send mail giving the (infamous) Task '..............com - Sending' reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook cannot connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).' Now if my ISP is safaricom,and I have not changed settings in the last few weeks,what am I supposed to do?Im hesitant to go through the call center option Anyone else suffering or just me?

Dear Friends We need to be our brother's and sister's keeper. The drought situation, increase in basic food prices and other obvious reasons become unbearable for the mwanainchi. I believe we should celebrate little about undersea cables and more about how we can aleviate the plight of our fellow citizens. Our's is a sharing profession. One of the leading figures of our industry, Bill Gates has given the majority of his wealth to a charitable trust... I open this thread to I pray hopefully cause action. If we cannot contribute cash, why not use the power of the internet to flood websites of humanitarian institutes begging for food relief for Kenya. Posting and contribution to youtube videos about the situation. Writing realn stories on the plight. Setting up blogs, reserving a minimal sum for csr and the like. Please my sisters and brothers let us share helping our fellow family as we share technology. We cannot feed cables to our people, and economic change is longterm. Hackers successfully stole passwords from some of Facebook's 200 million users. Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt said that the site was in the process of cleaning up damage from the attack, and that that Facebook was blocking compromised accounts. Schnitt declined to say how many accounts had been compromised. The hackers got passwords through what is known as a phishing attack, breaking into accounts of some Facebook members, then sending e-mails to friends and urging them to click on links to fake websites. Those sites were designed to look like the Facebook home page. The victims were directed to log back in to the site, but actually logged into the one controlled by the hackers, unwittingly giving away their passwords.
