7 July 2009 NAIROBI - Three HIV/AIDS patients in Kenya announced Tuesday they will petition the country’s Constitutional Court to declare a new anti-counterfeiting act illegal because it could deny them access to generic medicines. The move, which has the support of public health groups across the country, seeks to have the 2008 Anti-Counterfeiting Act made unconstitutional on the grounds that it could rob them of their right to life. The anti-counterfeiting law, which is aimed at cracking down on the fake batteries, pens, drugs and cosmetics flooding into Kenya, has been criticised by the NGO community and importers of generic drugs because of the way it defines counterfeit products. They say its definition is so vague that it could include generic drugs. The act could also allow a pharmaceutical company to charge patent infringement in Kenya even if its patent is not registered there. ”Generic medicines are legitimate exact copies of their brand-name original. They are not counterfeits,” the three said in a statement read out at a news conference. “They should not be confused with counterfeits. I am using command line programs like Aria2c and mplayer. the problem is that when i launch them from gnome, they do not display console output, as is the case when you open them directly in console. Hi I recently upgraded my netbeans from 6.0 to 6.5.1 n man this thing seems not to recognise where the Sun Java(TM) Wireless Toolkit 2.5.2 for CLDC is.. i hav tried unstalling and reinstalling everything but wapi! am even thinking of reverting back to my good old 6.0. Did u install the version with Mobility (or something like that)? Somewhere on the tools menu (or one of those menus where configurations are set) you should be able to point it to the path of the wireless toolkit. But I think if u installed the one with Mobility then it should have picked the path automatically during installation because that path is in your System's PATH settings. 6.5.1 is better than 6. It offers a way to connect with the people you care about by sharing updates with them on the Web, IM, and SMS - as well as through third-party applications built by other developers . We do not seek to drive users away from other popular social or microblogging platforms, but indeed complement these other popular social networks that many have by now become accustomed to. It will therefore be possible to cross post to twitter and ( facebook -coming in 2 weeks) from our site and facebook application. You will also be able to use popular desktop tools such as twihirl to update your posts. Whats more, we will now be able to have trending topics that are relevant to us while still being part of global conversations in other social media. We believe that by virtue of the messaging nature that microblogging offers ( 140 characters) there is a huge potential in Africa for a Platform such as this owing to the high penetration of mobile phones in comparision to computers. my thots.. skunk(ettes). while reading the daily nation today, I came across this device. I'm not going to name it since it would become searchable ( classified page 37, under misc. top right hand corner ). I remember we had an online discussion ( thread about RF and etc ) and I find it a more than a coincidence that someone may have picked up on our techie discussions. While ours has always been about techie stuff, that knowledge in the wrong hands is not a good idea. The authorities need to look into the advert. I hope some day the authorities will have some volunteer time slots for ICT Crime Watch, am sure many skunks will help. Hence forth, I'd be limiting my contributions to normal tech stuff only. Thought I wud share on the great dilema of internet bundle offers from various telcos. I bought a YU line yesterday and at 100 bob I get to keep my older number but with the YU prefix. I got the line primarily for internet coz their bundle seems to be the cheapest. I tried it out for about an hour and I was a satisfied customer. One may wonder why I would rather use my phone than buy a modem from any of the networks (in this case Orange, $afcom, YU). Although it's more expensive, probably twice the cost, it's far more reliable and the bandwidth seems to be higher. On $afcom there are very few instances when I couldn't log on the net via my phone and each time downloads speeds are about 26KB/s (Note KB not Kb). On the other hand my experience with the modem has been miserable, actually I can't remember when I've connected to the net using the modem. I'm testing YU next week and I might as well get an Orange line. More on that on the next paragraph. So I now have a YU line and a $afcom line and one phone. New plan is to buy a dual sim phone (around 4,500) and buy an Orange SIM. So when I'm surfing using one line, the rest of the two lines can be in the dual SIM line. So guys can still call me on any of my lines and I can surf the net using any of the lines. Onto one of the most important items, costs: I would say that for someone who needs a reliable net connection via mobile then the modems might be a disappointment. Using a 3G/Edge enabled phone to connect *may cost more* but the value outweighs the savings if using a modem bundle. (Clarifications needed from other people's experiences). Estimating the costs for someone who wants to start from Scratch: A 3G/Edge enabled phone would be around 15K, a dual SIM phone would be around 4,500 so lets round the cost to 20K for both (u have to buy the 3 lines:Orange, $afcom, YU and put some credit). Let me estimate 4,500 per modem which comes to around 14K for the 3 modems. The saving here is 6K. However note that with the phones one can make cheaper phone calls, and with all these promotions and the competition I believe the 6K will be easily offset. So what is left are the monthly costs: If one is using data (which I assume is the main reason you've read this far) then the telco with cheapest data rate makes most sense to use which in this case is YU @ 3bob/MB. If in a day one mainly opens web pages and chats, an average of 3MB, and once in a while downloads an average of 4MB then usage in a day is around 7MB, but lets double that and make it 14MB. So in a day that's 42 bob and in 20 working days, why not even make it 30 days, it's 1,260 bob. That sounds good! For those once in a while big downloads of 30MB or more, an internet cafe/hot spot might suffice. This assumes 3bob/MB which can change and go up. With cheaper bandwidth and the competition in the market I don't see it going up past 5 bob/MB. The telcos with more than 5 bob/MB will likely bring it down. So there it is. Anyone doing the same, I (we) would appreciate your input. 8~)

(Oh! So I could have just walked out... How silly of me for being a conformist). Anyway, Amble back to the HO, give the guy a form he doesn't look at, he rips my (?counterfoil?) part of it using his hands and gives it to me. I walk out free... That's the swine flu screening going on. If it was up to me? Removing Viruses on flash

Hi Guys, I thought I should post something about removing viruses: Step 1: Run the virus scan on the flash drive. If you dont have an av or feel that it missed something, proceed to step 2 Step 2: The rest There is this virus family that hides all folders in a flash and creates new files with the original folder name and appending a .exe. So if you had a folder called Docs, u will see Docs.exe. If you have not enabled display of file extensions, the .exe part will not be seen. So all you will see is Docs. You double click it thinking its your folder, and that executes the virus. This is what I do: I DO NOT double click on a flash drive directly in My Computer - (actually that's what I do not do) After ascertaining the drive letter (lets say its G:), go to Start -> Run -> cmd C:\Documents and Settings\etc>G: Move to the root of the flash G:\> Type dir /a This shows all the folders (like ls -a in Linux) including hidden ones If you do see autorun.inf you can check what file it activates by typing G:\>more autorun.if (There is more in windows, yey! No less, though :)) >From the output you can see the file/virus being called by the autorun.inf. Autorun.inf gets executed when u double click on the drive letter on my computer. Remove the autorun.inf G:\>attrib -h -r -s autorun.inf This removes s(ystem), r(ead only) and h(idden) attributes. On Linux/cygwin, u can do chmod 777 autorun.inf G:\>del autorun.inf Removing the 'fake' .exe folders dir *.exe - This will list all .exes You can delete all of them by using del *.exe. However, deleting one by one is recommended since you might have a valid .exe file on your flash - like firefox_3.05.exe G:\>del Docs.exe Access Denied If u get the Access Denied error, its most probably of file attributes - sometimes the virus sets them as system files or read only This command resets all the attributes G:\>attrib -h -r -s Docs.exe del Docs.exe should now work Do the same for all .exes Again, if using cygwin (or if removing from linux), chmod 777, then rm -i *.exe should do. Next Step: Displaying hidden folders The folders in the flash were set to attrib s by the virus hence making them hidden from normal view. To see them, do a dir /a. A better way is to a dir /a:s This will show all files with attribute s(ystem) Again, do a reset of attributes for all folders: G:\>attrib -s -h -r <foldername> Guys running cygwin can do this using the chmod 777 -R <foldername> Summary: G:\>dir /a G:\>more autorun.if G:\>attrib -h -r -s autorun.inf G:\>del autorun.inf G:\>attrib -h -r -s <filename>.exe G:\>del <filename>.exe G:\>dir /a:s G:\>attrib -s -h -r <foldername> There are other stuff to consider like SYSTEM, RECYCLER, RECYCLED,etc folders: Going into these will make an already long mail too long. Feel free to explore there and search and delete virus files. Do not delete the RECYCLER folder Disclaimer: The set of instructions mostly work for flash disks. They might work on hdds as well but if a virus is already on a hdd then most probably there is a service/daemon/dll that is running in memory regenerating the virus files. Thats what anti-viruses are for. But they can be removed - manually. It covers only a very small sub-set of viruses/trojans/worms - they mean the same to me:( so an antivirus is still the better option.

To my shock Kenya is no.1 for search term queries on 'vb programming' on Google Trends as of today (July-2-2009) http://www.google.com/trends?q=vb+programming&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0 After organizing the 1st Microsoft Official Curriculum (MOC) C# training in Kenya over 5 years ago this is very distressing to me. It clearly did not catch on. Thought Kenya deserved a better programming reputation but it seems we have more work to do so ... India tops with most search queries for most programming languages (including the term 'VB.Net'). Interestingly, Pakistan tops 'c++ programming' beating even India. South Africa (RSA) is no.7 (Iran is 6th and Egypt is 9th) for 'c++ programming' queries. Could be their geeks write device drivers for (weaponry?) electronics manufactured in their nations. India tops queries for 'c programming' - RSA is no.8 on this one. Indonesia tops 'PHP'. India comes 2nd here. Czech Republic tops Python. USA tops Ruby. The most interesting thing about the query tem 'C#' is that small but Innovative Israel is no.2 as far as interest in (querying) 'C#' goes. China did not show (top 10) interest in the terms: 'Java', 'VB.Net', 'Php', 'Python' or Ruby. Could be something to do with their language(s) - alphabet. China did however show interest in C# and 'J2EE'. On Queries for 'C# Programming' Pakistan tops, India - 2nd, Iran - 3rd, RSA - 4th, Singapore - 5th, Egypt - 8th. _________________________ Wonder who in the world will take us more seriously because of our VB and PHP (JOOMLA) projects?

The site is the latest effort by Kundra and the Office of Management and Budget to make data about the government's projects and performance visible to the public. Citizens and Web developers can parse the data, combine it with other data sets and publish the results on Web feeds or their Facebook profiles. The data also show which contracts were won through a competitive process or in a no-bid method, which has been criticized by good-government advocates for excluding firms from business opportunities. Each prime contractor is listed as well as the status of that project; sub-contractors are not yet shown on the site. Last month, Kundra launched Data.gov <http://data.gov/>, a repository for data feeds that are publicly available but often hard to find. The site started with 47 data sets. Kundra said there are now more than 100,000. Kundra's announcement was met with cheers and a standing ovation from the Twittering crowd at a Lincoln Center auditorium. The launch fulfills one of the promises Kundra made to Congress, in which he pledged to develop a new way of monitoring federal technology spending by the end of June. Launching a site that makes spending practices open to the public met some opposition from the agencies' chief information officers and government contractors, some of whom were nervous about letting citizens who aren't familiar with the contracting process and technology needs of the government judge the spending decisions. Kundra said he met with every agency and dozens of company executives over the past six weeks. "I talked to the CIO Council and saw the data change overnight," Kundra said. "It was cleaned up immediately when people realized it was going to be made public." A federal report last year found that $30 billion worth of IT projects were not going smoothly or were in danger of failing. Thanks for your response Paul, i am looking at it from point number 3 in your list, given the challenging nature of Projects conducted in teams, the ICT board could create a Special Purpose Vehicle, that would identify the needs of each project and try to match them with available expertise on the lists, the board can also provide guarantees to the client and once the project is delivered, the board can take its cut in the form of management costs (something similar to the way KBS manages peoples matatus), this would help to bring more focus into the projects, my thoughts are based on the number of Collaborative projects that have been brought up on this forum but they dont seem to take of despite their economic viability. Give this thing 2 more days. If people aint stepping up or are not available, take the budget, find a company that can do it (Kenya, Africa, the World, even Martians) and get the work done. It's great that you threw in the idea in the list. I do hope a Skunk(ette) team will take it up. BTW: With freelancers you have a risk: People have their own psychological, behavior, etc issues. I hope the time line of the project includes time for the freelance team to get to know one another. Wassup Skunks, Got this strange reading from my 'df -h' output on Sol 10: Filesystem size used avail capacity Mounted on ... /dev/md/dsk/d30 9.6G 8192E 0K 92365229983016% /var ... >From 'du -sh *' of / it shows that the size of '/var' is 1.7G. Aki you've brought out the basis of my skepticism (on whether Al can get that team here) and I will expound: 1. As far as I know, there are very few, if at all any projects that have been developed from guys who met in the list despite this list existing for atleast 3 years. (If I'm wrong on this then the more the reason my argument is wrong). 2. It's not that Skunk(ette)s don't want to work together on a project, I think the issue (which I mentioned on my first reply) is guys don't have time. Personally I would like to participate in development of many projects mentioned in the list lakini time is on my back like a bad rash! 3. I feel most of the members in the list have not participated in any IT/Networks/Hardware/Software development/any other techie stuff, or are just fishing (I know that's not the spelling but I have a craving) for ideas. Given the above it would be good to know who is in the skunkworks list? I hear we have a few thousand people in the list but who are they and what do they do? Only 10-15 people seem to contribute regularly. Others (recently Al Kags) and myself have posted job vacancies for developers but no replies! With member information people like Al can be more focused in their search. Folks, It's always been very difficult, if not impossible, to convince someone how much 'down' one has been if their flat rate Internet has NOT been connecting... But some good news... Linux users can review *all* their failed Internet connection attempts, and all other computer activities log. Serves as quite some incriminating evidence - both ways (e.g. if been visiting ...movie sites...) because every IP address visited is logged as well... and since e-evidence is now legal courtesy of KCA, 2008. If you run Ubuntu( Linux) Operating System, have a have a look at your current /var/log/messages file. Once the file gets large it's archived and a new small one created. An e-record of all failed Internet connections/downtime register now exists. Poor Internet Services Providers chungeni. Sasa ni kubaya sana! Alex

Orange data - have become really baad!

I take back all praise I had heaped on Orange "broadband" service. I have painfully suffered since last Friday, no internet yet I am up to date on payments. My calIs to customer care are actually disconected by their operators. How terrible! PC to TV video splitters

Hi people, I have an application installed on a PC which generates about 10 graphs of real time data, I would like to output these graphs to about 4 sony bravia TVs. My preliminary investigations indicate that a video splitter would do that. I have never used one before, any skunks with more details? Any local suppliers? What if I wanted to have the 10 graphs be like kawaida TV channels so that I can tell users something like; "Switch to channel 5 to see report X", any leads on I can do that? Thanks!
