Idea for Telcos: Open Platform.

Hi yall, Can one of our ever competing Telcos develop a platform and expose APIs that allow developers to plug in applications to their back-end infrastructure that they hold dear? There are many developers who want to build awesome mobile applications but they would like access to the Telcos infrastructure for the application to make business/market sense. With all these applications, come the subscribers. If there is a Telco out there willing to do the next big thing after M-PESA, then I believe this is it. Have a department of skilled developers familiar with Telco stuff and the department will be the link to the outside developers, providing knowledge, support etc that a normal developer would need to plug in. Hopefully if at all the developer is charged anything then it will be reasonable. O_o?

Of freelance teams and project afya et al.

Skunk(ettes), I am informed that only one team responded to the project Afya. This team, it seems, consists of some serious professionals and they will be meeting with the client in the next few days. I suppose that only one team responded suggests to me that most skunk(ette)s are uninterested/unable/un-confident to work in teams and bid for work. I had a few who said to me that they had never before bid or done a profile of themselves and therefore were not confident. I had a number of company executives from web companies - including one who is fairly active on this forum - suggest to me that giving a chance to freelance developers is a waste of time and the work should be given to them. One supposes that we shall watch Project Afya's performance with interest. In other news, I had another set of clients who have a project that we can call 'project watu' who have interest in trying out a freelance team. Should they hold out any hope that this model could work in skunkworks? Kags

And it's no coincidence the Department of Commerce that oversees ICANN is the fourth most lobbied agency in the US government. The amount the trademark lobby spend on preventing new TLDs since 1996 is staggering IBM admitted to spending $30M/yr in 1998 and 1999 but we have no other figures. There is not now, full disclosure of lobbying efforts on behalf of the trademark lobby Or known how much big business spending this year to lobby against the creation of new top level domains. Question part 1: Is full disclosure of lobbying not consistent with ICANN's "open and transparent" US Government mandate? We (noncommercial users) have really been asleep at the wheel over the last year while the ICANN Board of Directors had their heads filled with mis-representations about NCUC by relentless back-door lobbying. They get it from the commercial/IPR crowd and they get it from staff, neither of whom want to see noncommercial users effective in policy development. The fact that we haven't engaged in backdoor lobbying the way our critics do is coming back to haunt us by ICANN trying to take away our newly won 3 elected council seats for noncommercial users and staff imposing its "stranglehold" charter while ignoring all of work we did to develop one that was supported by global civil society (63 organizations + dozens of individuals in public comments). In particular, under the SIC approved charter<http://gnso.icann.org/en/improvements/csg-proposed-petition-charter-22jun09…>for the CSG, they are going to allow any of the existing members of the IPR, ISP, and Commercial Constituencies VETO any board vote creating a new commercial constituency in the CSG. Amazing! The press should be having a field day with this level of incompetence and favoritism. Spot on! That's something I find disturbing. Physics is THE subject that attempts to explains how the universe works, and that leads to interesting inventions, however it seems very ignored by govmnts. However 'developed' countries U.S, Russia, etc use it. Allow me to express my passion of the subject: Without physics mathematics would just be numbers. Physics gives maths a home, a context. Biology can't exist in a physically (not the physics in physically) distorted world. Different composition of atoms, their velocities, attractive force, ... have given rise to Chemistry. And to put the icing on the cake, God's grand design is revealed through an understanding of physics. Once one sees how these simple designs fit in and balance each other to create awesome gigantic structures at atomic levels then the mind opens up to the Heavens. For example: Do u know what makes blue ray DVDs store more data than the current DVDs? You dont. Great, indulge me for a moment: Current DVD readers use red light to read data on DVDs, Red light has a longer wavelength meaning data on the storage device (DVD) needs more spacing. But blue light has a shorter wavelength so data can be compacted more. Now here comes more icing in the cake as to the simplicity of the matter. We are surrounded everyday by the fact that blue has a shorter wavelength! You don't believe it? Go outside and look at the Sky. It's Blue! You can wipe the blackberry under Options -> Security Options -> General Settings Then access full menu and choose wipe. This will clear all data from your phone so its best you backup your contacts and messages first. This is what will happen when you get to 10 tries and there is no other way to clear the password.

Guys, I have been thinking there is no worse marriage than the one we have between Agwambo's oranges and Ubako's Banana and I have finally come accross a worse marriage. Safaricon wedded Vodacom in Tanzania. Call this a result of too many tuskers but I will still insist the marriage gave me more time for enriching its competitor in profits, EABL, due to poor speeds. For instance, to load my Gmail account took same time as 320ML of Tusker down my throat. Am not a fast drinker just so you know. I have come up with 10 reasons why the Coalition government is better than Safaricom + Vodacom. 1. Both are Cons (SafariCON and VodaCON). 2. 3g in Dar on a safcon line means 3bps. 3. Vodacom has poorer customer support than KBC TV. 4. When you follow the customer service prompt on Vodacom, there is a place where you select your prefered language. All recorded messages are in English but the live person who picks up talks swahili. If you request they talk English, Charlene my 5 year old daughter speaks better English. 5. When you get here, Safaricom takes a Safari and Vodacom gives you Voodo. 6. Am roaming on Voda, I keep getting SMS from other networks here to roam with them, I thought it was a faithful marriage with Safaricom. 7. I have to do this email on Basic HTML Gmail. 8. Since I came here, I know more bars and internet cafes than I know in Nairobi. 9. Its damn expensive to call Safaricom numbers from my Safaricom line, which normally costs me about 8 bob, now I am paying 30somthing... 10. When I click send, it will mean another Tusker down my throat before I see "Message Sent". Now I could go on and on, but as you notice, am a frustrated customer of the two giants. Someone forward this to Michael Joseph and ask him to send me a "Please Call me, Thank You", I will spend my over 30 shillings a minute to call him and offer him some few words. If there is a Michael Joseph of Vodacom, tell him to change his way if he suspects am on the same road, there is no telling what a drunk internet addict can do.... Also pass this message to whoever is doing the C-Class Promotion on safaricom data, ask them how am supposed to accumulate points when I can only do 3 bytes per second. Now the thing is I got some of these games eg Project IGI, MostWanted and GTA. I need NFS2 or any other enjoyable games. Hello all... I have a slight problem with a certain page. I have five tables: listing, towns, buildings, categories and sub-categories. The page that i wish to display will show the listings form the listing table in the database. The listing table contains a categoryid, subcategoryid, buildingid and townid. I would like to display all these fields as names, hence the need for the join. However, a sub-category may be null, hence the need for the left join. I created the query below which is returning no data. For the life of me, I can't diagnose the problem... Top ten tips for preventing innovation *1. Hire employees looking for safety in their roles*. Innovation happens when people stretch outside their comfort zones – don’t let them stretch! Find people who primarily want security and a nine-to-five role, stay away from those troublemakers who want to “change the world.” *2. Hire incompetent employees*. What better way to prevent innovation than to have people who have to focus just to do the bare minimum? For extra safety, try and find someone who can take credit for other people’s work and hide their own incompetence – these people are easier to promote, which will become important later. If we are forced to hire someone who is competent, it’s critical that we make sure that they only have one area of expertise. People with more than one area of expertise, switch-hitters, just cause trouble by talking to people on other teams. *3.Keep salaries below the 75th percentile.* Innovators know their value – and when they aren’t applying for jobs with intrinsic utility to them, they are commanding higher salaries. If we keep our salaries low, there’s much less risk of one of these innovators sneaking into our organization. As a bonus, we’ll save a fortune! *4. Read The Ten Faces of Innovation by Tom Kelley of IDEO.* He focuses on the types of people and organizational behavior that encourage innovation. The writing style is very clever – Mr. Kelley writes as if he were trying to encourage innovation – what a riot! He identifies ten personas that contribute to innovation. Put those ten faces on the wall in HR like an FBI most-wanted poster and coach HR to screen those people out. *5. Treat employees like garbage.* Yell at them. Whenever possible, call them at midnight to yell at them some more. They work for us. If they get uppity, make them work on the weekends. Make them dig holes and fill them back up again. Threaten them – especially when they need the job. If you can’t yell, at least be condescending in public forums. Remember we are smarter than they are. Punks. *6.Reward conservative and marginal successes.* The old rule of thumb for office politics was “It takes ten good projects to recover from one bad project.” Stick to it! If we punish people for mistakes when they ’swing for the fences’, and reward them for marginal and safe projects, they will quickly get the idea. This is the most subtle of all the tips – but don’t worry – people will figure out the reward system and shy away from those risky projects. This technique has the added benefit of propogating itself up and down the management hierarchy. Many organizations get lucky, and do this one accidentally. Wish we were all so lucky! *7. Micromanage.* We’ve been promoted because we understand their jobs so well that we could do them in our sleep. Whatever those pesky little people think, it’s wrong. We know what we want, we know how we want it (not like that, you fool!). Every day we should make sure they do things exactly like we want. Even things like using the right font in their emails can be important. If anything slips thru unmanaged, then we aren’t doing our jobs. Of course, if we have a good boss, he’ll tell us exactly how to manage them. *8. Only create customer-requested features.* Let our customers tell us what to do. Lucky for us – customers don’t have big ideas, they keep us focused on what we’re doing. Don’t let them whine about their other problems – that’s not why we’re talking to them. We just want to know if they like the idea of animated buttons on all the dialogs. Stay away from the unhappy customers – if we aren’t getting the job done now, well, we don’t really care what they say (they are existing customers, we need new customers). We’re here to solve our problems. Oh – and don’t second guess the customer. If they say they want the menu items in alphabetical order, well, that’s what they want. The customer is always right. If Henry Ford had listened, think of how fast horses would be today. Even better, appoint a user-representative, then we don’t have to talk to the customers at all. *9.Make performance reviews easy.* Create some easy-to-measure metrics (like # of sick-days taken, # of powerpoint slides created, # of meetings attended), and use those for performance reviews. People always gravitate toward the metric. We can run the reviews with a minimum of effort, giving us more time to tell them how to do their jobs. Just an hour a year. Some managers can give feedback in 15 minutes. *10. Build a kingdom.* When we have information, that means we have power. With that power, we can grow our organization. The more people we have, the more important we are. We need to make sure that those other teams don’t get our information. They might apply it in ways that we didn’t intend. While we’re at it – make sure our people don’t find out what we know. Not only will it protect us from them, but it will keep them from accidentally discovering a more important problem, or an alternate way to apply what they already know to a new problem domain.

Am currently in TZ and within 3g coverage. Using my safaricom line, I get worse connectivity than Kenya's Zain if anyone knows what that means. At the same location i switch sim cards and use a vodacom line, I get serious 3g, up to 250 KBPS, now this is a funny thing because in Nairobi, vodacom subscribers get as good speeds as i get on my safaricom, someone communicate this to safaricom.... Writing Professional Engagement Contracts

Hello People, 2 cents ... For quite some time now I have come across technical proposal contracts, consultancy engagement contracts, Service level agreements and Statement of Works documents that are very poorly written. They normally leave the the provider or consultant or consultancy firm in a massive material and/or financial exposure because of the unlimited liability that is created in the agreement on the document. Badly written contracts can also result in one having his or her professional indemnity insurance policy getting nullified. First, let me talk about some of the legal buzz words that appear on contract documents ... “Damages” – are compensation for loss suffered owing to a breach of contract, a tort (civil wrong as opposed to a criminal wrong), or breach of some duty or responsibility that is mandated by a statute or act of parliament (e.g. product liability to a consumer) committed by some person or company. Different points of view may arise as to how much damages for a certain case can be but generally the principle is to put the innocent party, to the extent that money can achieve it, in the position as if it had not been subjected to the loss. Damages can also be general, nominal, special or exemplary (as a punishment) depending on jurisdiction.. (geographical , functional etc etc) “Warranties, conditions, obligations, liabilities and covenants” are simply provisions which when breached give rise to a claim for damages or compensation. These are normally subject to legal rules relating to damages such as mitigating (reducing) your losses “Indemnities and guarantees” – are promises to do something (usually pay money) on the happening of a specified event.These are meant to hold a party harmless from all risk associated with the specified event. Indemnities are therefore much wider and involve more risk for the consultant. "Direct v/s Indirect losses" - We often hear talk about direct and indirect or consequential losses or damages. These are widely misunderstood (even among our learned friends - the lawyers cum politicians) and have different meanings in different jurisdictions. Commonly (but incorrectly), there is a tendency to differentiate the two types in terms of the cost of re-instatement or fixing the part that has failed as against purely financial losses such as lost revenues or profits that the customer could have earned had, if for example, the defective software continued to work properly. However, this is often not the correct distinction legally. Under Common law, which was adapted in Kenya, for example, purely financial losses (such as lost profits) can still be classed as “direct” losses so long as they result or “flow” directly from the breach”. Having said that ... a professional should try to limit his /her liability as much as possible. Many jurisdictions prohibit the total exclusion of certain types of liability on the grounds of public policy (e.g. liability for death or personal injury which is as a result of the professional's negligence). It is usual to acknowledge liability for these injuries ... BUT liability for loss of profits, revenue, business and data (“indirect”) should be excluded in the contracts at all times. This is because large claims/losses are very possible here. The customer can always mitigate against such losses by for example paying for redundancy or backing -up or seeking alternative services.Including indirect liability is almost like underwriting/insuring the customer’s business. All remaining liability (“direct”) should be capped. eg.. capping the losses to the value of the consultancy fees or a % of it.The amount of the cap is normally a variable for negotiation. I am not a lawyer but I believe that a professionally written agreement document should follow the below basic principles.. - Cover Page .. with a clear title that indicates what the document is all about, customer name, provider's name , logos are optional, Date is optional, one could include a professional picture to make it colorful.. - General Information .. Here put in customer details, the customer SPOC contact details, the provider's SPOC contact details, date, document version, contract reference number or code - Financial Proposal .. here include the prices, clearly indicating the currency, the assumed exchange rate and the payment model, eg One time payment, recurring payment, payment by milestone, or whatever mode u want. Always separate the professional fees from the other charges that are incurred in the engagement. EG "Security consultancy fees = 200,000 ,, Internet access fees = 12,000, travel and accommodation = 30,000. Consultants who incur travel and accommodation expenses should always include a clause indicating that any unforeseen extra expenses that may be incurred in the cause of engagement will be charged to the customer .. something like The foregoing travel and accommodation fees reflects an estimate of activities required to perform the work under this contract, which may vary from the actual time spent, and travel expenses incurred . Unless expressly agreed otherwise, charges shall be incurred on the basis of actual time spent and travel and will be charged to the customer at cost. - Description of Product / Service.. Here start with an executive summary of what the deal is all about then describe the product or service as you normally do. - Contractual Terms and Conditions .. this is where most of us get a D minus ... This section is the "legal" part of the document if you could call it so .. This section should have the following... - A general section with clauses that talk about how payment will be done, the effective date of the contract (eg this contact is effective upon signature), change management and its impact on charges, , assumptions and references to other binding documents if they exist... a previous contract - A section on limited liability that completely absolves the provider from liability from in-direct losses and capping liability from direct losses. - A confidentiality clause that protects both parties from disclosure of confidential information to third parties .. this is self explanatory .. - A clause stating the governing law, the language to be used and the place of arbitration that will be used in case of a dispute This becomes important when u are doing a deal in a foreign country ..eg lets say you were contracted to inspect the UN firewalls in Addis Ababa .. and somehow y'all disagreed .. you will be in more trouble if you had not on the onset argued that you would sign the agreement in Kenya, use Kenya laws, use the English language in a Kenyan court to resolve the dispute ... Can you imagine a Kenyan trying to describe an exploit in Amharic .... :-) (no offense to the Ethiopians) - Lastly a signature section saying something like "by signing below, Customer confirms that Provider may commence the work detailed in this agreement and that all its internal requirements for authorizations have been complied with" __________ (customer name, date etc) ___________________ (provider name, date). Thats my 2 cents .. i hope it helps .. feel free to add your thoughts too ..

I installed the drivers and it worked the first time but apparently after that the connection seemed to disappear. Is there anyone who has encountered something similar. The fault in high level programming languages

Just sharing another thought from the programming world. Lattely I've been forced to look into assembly programming. And with awe and surprise I was struck! I came to appreciate the processor and what it goes through. More importantly I came to appreciate the connection of what happens in the processor and what is stored in memory. I was especially struck with the hoops the processor has to go through in order to fetch data from data structures in memory which are as a result of high level programming language features. I will take a simple case of data alignment. Those in the Java world are probably in a worse of case because they cannot choose the alignment for data allocated in memory (or may be Java does it for simple cases). The processor loves when the memory address of the data it fetches is aligned to a memory address value that is a multiple of the size of the data type. For example an integer is 4 bytes in size therefore an interger data should be in a memory address value that's a multiple of 4. For data structures then the alignment is according to the size of the data structure and this is where a high level programming language might screw up. Due to inheritance and polymophism a virtual table for function mapping is created in memory and the programmer has no control of that therefore the class data structure might not be aligned. High level languages seem to be created for the purpose of making modelling of real world concepts easier for the programmer, thus OOP. They seem to ignore the other world, the processor world. However compilers attempt to optimize the code for the processor but not always archieving the optimizations. Above is just a simple case. It's not completely explained but it introduces the idea. It probably won't make sense to someone who doesn't know C++ and processor stuff but atleast it's information for those willing to go under the hood! This doesn't matter for applications that are not concerned about performance. O_O.

Mail Hosting Service Provider

Hello Again, I've spent the whole day trying to find a simple solution provider. There seems to be none these days, or is there? I have a domain which already has MX pointed to some provider and mail is working. Because of budgetary constraints, my "client" is using ADSL connection. The mail server is a laptop. Works quite well for the setup, I must say, except spam is an issue, but that is not what I need to address. Now, there are some staff who are located elsewhere and for things to look "official", they need to be using the domain name in their e-mail addresses. I have decided that for now, creating a subdomain and hosting the associated MX with some other provider will do. So I am gonna have subdomain.foo.bar created. The problem is that all the service providers I am talking to have staff who believe that this is NOT possible unless the parent domain is hosted with them. Some service providers are simply drowning in bureaucratic red tape. So now I have to ask: Does anyone know a service provider who can offer mailboxes based on a subdomain without putting me through an interview process? I just need a SP who will say "Yes, we can. 10 mailboxes, NNN Kenya Shillings annually, point your MX records to these two hosts and come with the money. You will be done in 10 minutes". This noon I walked into a shop along kenyatta avenue and was shocked that they were selling an iphone 3G at 73000 because it was unlocked. - at a time when its retailing at 7700 in US meaning that even if you import and jailbreak it shouldnt cost more that 10 k considering that import duty was scrapped. just checked the wiki on failed states and it is embarassing for .KE to make it on such a list together with Somalia, Zim, Iraq amongst others! Fact is - even if we were not black-listed - there's so much international mileage Kenya lost during the 200/8 fracas. Evidence is there when one compares the respect the Kenyan passport holders used to be accorded at international airports - before and after 2007/8 . The difference is huge - and ofcourse in the negative direction. The Treasury Department, Secret Service, Federal Trade Commission and Transportation Department Web sites were all down at varying points over the holiday weekend and into this week, according to officials inside and outside the government. Some of the sites were still experiencing problems Tuesday evening. Cyber attacks on South Korea government and private sites also may be linked, officials there said. U.S. officials refused to publicly discuss details of the cyber attack. But Amy Kudwa, spokeswoman for the Homeland Security Department, said the agency's U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team issued a notice to federal departments and other partner organizations about the problems and "advised them of steps to take to help mitigate against such attacks." The U.S., she said, sees attacks on its networks every day, and measures have been put in place to minimize the impact on federal Web sites. It was not clear whether other federal government sites also were attacked. Others familiar with the U.S. outage, which is called a denial of service attack, said that the fact that the government Web sites were still being affected three days after it began signaled an unusually lengthy and sophisticated attack. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the matter. Web sites of major South Korean government agencies, banks and Internet sites also were paralyzed in a suspected cyber attack Tuesday. Ahn Jeong-eun, a spokeswoman at the Korea Information Security Agency, said the U.S. and South Korean attacks appeared to be linked. The South Korean sites included the presidential Blue House, the Defense Ministry, the National Assembly, Shinhan Bank, Korea Exchange Bank and top Internet portal Naver. They went down or had access problems since late Tuesday, Ahn said. Kudwa had no comment on the South Korean attacks. Two government officials acknowledged that the Treasury and Secret Service sites were brought down, and said the agencies were working with their Internet service provider to resolve the problem. Ben Rushlo, director of Internet technologies at Keynote Systems, called it a "massive outage" and said problems with the Transportation Department site began Saturday and continued until Monday, while the FTC site was down Sunday and Monday. Keynote Systems is a mobile and Web site monitoring company based in San Mateo, Calif. The company publishes data detailing outages on Web sites, including 40 government sites it watches. According to Rushlo, the Transportation Web site was "100 percent down" for two days, so that no Internet users could get through to it. The FTC site, meanwhile, started to come back online late Sunday, but even on Tuesday Internet users still were unable to get to the site 70 percent of the time. "This is very strange. You don't see this," he said. "Having something 100 percent down for a 24-hour-plus period is a pretty significant event." He added that, "The fact that it lasted for so long and that it was so significant in its ability to bring the site down says something about the site's ability to fend off (an attack) or about the severity of the attack." Denial of service attacks against Web sites are not uncommon, and are usually caused when sites are deluged with Internet traffic so as to effectively take them off-line. Mounting such an attack can be relatively easy using widely available hacking programs, and they can be made far more serious if hackers infect and use thousands of computers tied together into "botnets." For instance, last summer, in the weeks leading up to the war between Russia and Georgia, Georgian government and corporate Web sites began to see "denial of service" attacks. The Kremlin denied involvement, but a group of independent Western computer experts traced domain names and Web site registration data to conclude that the Russian security and military intelligence agencies were involved. Documenting cyber attacks against government sites is difficult, and depends heavily on how agencies characterize an incident and how successful or damaging it is. Government officials routinely say their computers are probed millions of times a day, with many of those being scans that don't trigger any problems. In a June report, the congressional Government Accountability Office said federal agencies reported more than 16,000 threats or incidents last year, roughly three times the amount in 2007. Most of those involved unauthorized access to the system, violations of computer use policies or investigations into potentially harmful incidents. The Homeland Security Department, meanwhile, says there were 5,499 known breaches of U.S. government computers in 2008, up from 3,928 the previous year, and just 2,172 in 2006. I will take a simple case of data alignment. Those in the Java world are probably in a worse of case because they cannot choose the alignment for data allocated in memory (or may be Java does it for simple cases). The processor loves when the memory address of the data it fetches is aligned to a memory address value that is a multiple of the size of the data type. For example an integer is 4 bytes in size therefore an interger data should be in a memory address value that's a multiple of 4. For data structures then the alignment is according to the size of the data structure and this is where a high level programming language might screw up. Due to inheritance and polymophism a virtual table for function mapping is created in memory and the programmer has no control of that therefore the class data structure might not be aligned. High level languages seem to be created for the purpose of making modelling of real world concepts easier for the programmer, thus OOP. They seem to ignore the other world, the processor world. However compilers attempt to optimize the code for the processor but not always archieving the optimizations. Above is just a simple case. It's not completely explained but it introduces the idea. It probably won't make sense to someone who doesn't know C++ and processor stuff but atleast it's information for those willing to go under the hood! This doesn't matter for applications that are not concerned about performance. Then has Kenya been always a failed state? If we are a failed state now, when have we not been a failed state? Kenya might have it's issues but I wouldn't go as far as calling it a failed State. I think a better term is failed institutions, not because of lack of rules and regulations but because of lack of people with vision and integrity. So there's a thin line here. And if Kenya is a failed state then I would say that it's Kenyans who have failed it. The State is fine but most Kenyans have failed to do what is right for their country. One of the most sorry things I come across are young people with myopic vision. They sit and wait for things to improve. They can't even clean their environment, things that only cost effort not money. A second thing is fear. Most Kenyans I have seen are not bold enough to take the right action. They're still looking over their shoulders to check whether there are people who have their back. Suprisingly they are bold when doing the wrong things! China will come and construct our roads coz they are bold and they know the world is their's for the taking. Hi happy people, i need some serious help here. To blog designers, i once created a blogsite like 2yrs ago using the standard Google blogger templates - kennedy-nyarotho.blogspot.com (voted the most idle blog! :) . Thing is i need to create another but more professional and dynamic for some 'serious' cause asap. My Q is, is there some new other hard coded way of doing this or some much better templates available for this? Please if u knw, drop in a suggestion. And if you are a pro blog designer do drop me your contacts offlist and some of your works. Note that am in transit and googling using a phone isnt that interesting. There is another thing about Kenya that we are not looking at. Kenyans have money! In sub-saharan Africa I believe Kenya comes a good 3rd economy-wise after SA and Nigeria. This can lead to another argument on economies but ... I'm no economist so I'll speak from my simple observations: Ignore the poor Kenyans for a while (respectfully). Nairobi is parked full of thousands of cars. Rent is up but people are still paying. High end restaurants and shopping areas are up and running. Profits from $afcom, banks, etc, and on and on. One of the reasons the poor man might be suffering is that the demand for goods has shot up and prices along with it. I think this is so coz people are spending more or are buying wiser especially the generation in their 20s or 30s who are in good employment and have a small number or no children. This category of people are well educated and have planned the direction of their lives. Many of them don't come from rich backgrounds and have struggled to earn their wealth. I believe this now forms the new middle class of Kenya which raises the bar from the previous middle class and the poor have been caught with their pants down. It's not practical for someone who earns USD 200 a month to compete in purchasing the same basket of goods as someone who earns USD 1,000. That brings me on the next point. I believe in Kenya all income groups compete for the same basket of goods. These goods are essential! Unga ya Ugali, Sukuma wiki, mafuta, transport, mobile credit, etc. That's so because of poor planning (failure of institutions) such that people who earn about USD 100 a month are forced to compete with those earning 10 times that. The only difference is their tax brackets. It has been said that poor people pay more for goods and services than the rich. I believe so. Goods bought in bulk are cheaper, yet there is no way a family in the slums will afford to buy in bulk. I hope the data collected in the coming census will be used to create policies that make life affordable for the lower income group. Such as establishing special shops where same goods are at lower prices. But we saw what happened to the Unga ya Ugali! "President Bush," his boss quickly retorts. "Yup," dave say's, "Old buddies, let's fly out to Washington and off they go. At the White House, Bush spots dave on the tour and motions him and his boss over, saying, "dave, what a surprise, I was just on my way to a meeting, but you and your friend come on in and let's have a cup of coffee first and catch up." Well, the boss is very shaken by now but still not totally convinced. After they leave the White House grounds he expresses his doubts to dave, who again implores him to name anyone else. "The pope," his boss replies. "Sure!" says dave. "I've known the pope for years." So off they fly to Rome. dave and his boss are assembled with the masses at the Vatican's St. Peter's Square when dave says, "This will never work. I can't catch the pope's eye among all these people. Tell you what, I know all the guards so let me just go upstairs and I'll come out on the balcony with the pope." He disappears into the crowd headed towards the Vatican. Sure enough, half an hour later dave emerges with the pope on the balcony, but by the time dave returns, he finds that his boss has had a heart attack and is surrounded by paramedics. Making his way to his boss' side, dave asks him, "What happened?" His boss looks up and says, "It was the final straw ... you and the pope came out on to the balcony and the man next to me said, 'Who the hell is that on the balcony with dave?"
