BD, Page 1 and Internet pricing. ( Good to see BD going deep into things now ) :-) I would have stirred up a hornets nest ( but took a stand on SPs and lack of delivery ) and am now quite sure it would have not been positive. What EASSY is saying is correct. Teams needs to watch out for what EASSY says. If you want an idea of what really is going on, read BD yesterday and comments from providers ( besides comments from Hon PS Ndemo and Safaricom ). Here's a comparison price ( amatuer info ) : Seacom 1 Mbit Duplex to Service Provider = 600USD ( landed Nairobi via operators ) Satellite 1 Mbit Duplex to Service Provider = 2500USD ( landed nairobi via operators ) Safaricom, in my opinion, is the cheapest it will ever get until its recoups some BTS and infrastructure costs. I suspect in its plan to get clients onto broadband 3g earlier than the cable , it was subsidizing bandwidth to cater for growth. And I also suspect Safaricom have some very smart decison makers and it paid off big time! :-) And if CCK is going to help spur more development in Internet Industry, I think time has come for VISP, a new generation that have no links with the satellite past, ( say License fee of Kshs 10,000/- ) who own partial infrastructure but depend on others. Eg, So in an estate where SPs' have not gone, an individual as an VISP can bring the access, do the billing etc. Virgin is a success story. ( on a different scale as an MVNO ) Corrections are welcome. Rgds.

Hi Skunks, i have Satellite link and Kenstream link both connecting via a router A. Router Aconnects Network B and network C. I would like to configure a gateway such that the link from the satellite goes directly to network C where as the link from Kenstreme routes directly to network B. latencies are 400-600ms. If true, a big congrats to Safcom 3g on being the first GSM operator to bring seacom to kenyans via mobile networks. ( anyone pls confirm ? ). We are now + 29 hours into undersea cable going live.

Real public/private webservice servers Public/private data warehouse Cheap local hosting Kenyan mirrors for all sorts of s/w etc. What would be the challenges in building one? Salut, I am unable to get a solution from the Internet. I wish to invite you to help. *Problem*: E220 Wireless 3G modem, from Safaricom does not connect. It asks for a PIN, and every time this is submitted, it disconnects immediately, asking for the PIN. The Error message I get after the modem is detected is "Wireless device does not exist or unavailable" *Analysis*: Following some investigation, it appears that the same modem works on another laptop. I have even upgraded the firmware. and still the same errors. I feel that I have exhausted all the little skills I have in fixing this problem. Please advise. Tuma Barua.

It loads on my machine as if its on a localhost i.e http://unilever/ http://unilever/innovation/ http://unilever/mediacentre/ ..and so on all load as is (Ive attached some screenshots). I know of re-write rules but this one blew me away. Can anyone explain this? Am on an AK link, that could be a factor too. Regards

If there are any broadcast engineers in this Forum just wanted to know as a matter of curiosity how come there is no station in Kenya ( including Quarcoos Kiss TV) that broadcasts its audio in stereo..e.g Nicam A2 . I know that is possible even for analogue broadcasts having been out of the country and experienced it. Yeah tab control in vb6 forced you to play with the visible property of controls (groupbox etc). The easiest way out is .Net(vb.net/c#, managed c++) .... Hi All I am looking for a fast Internet connection for Home use. I right now have the Safaricom USB Modem which is excellent performing even better that my office connection ( AccessKenya). It is however turining out to be expensive as I have to fork out 1000 shs to recharge every 3 or 4 days. Im considering taking the Broadband Nyumbani from Orange and wanted opinions from fellow skunkers on how its performance is and are they on Seacom yet like Safcom. Cheers Kevin

For my whole life, i have never had problems setting up samba as a PDC. I have installed ubuntu 9. 64bit, set up dhcp flawlessly, set up webmin and apache, mysql and php. The only problem im having issues with is joining users to the domain. Im getting a "bad user or password" error that i just cannot figure out the problem. Good morning people, I am trying to forward a port in Ubuntu 9.04 (desktop) with no luck. For example - if I want to open 36850 how would I do so? I have tried: ufw allow 36850 and sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 36850 -j ACCEPT When I run netstat -l i see: tcp 0 0 *:36850 *:* LISTEN but according to port scans the port is still closed. The router is already configured for this port. so is this port open or what? ... well, the short answer is you can't. That's right. The good folks at Google have decided you are not allowed to delete any applications you launched in AppEngine, or any data you created in the AppEngine's datastores. Sure, there are workarounds that may "work around" the problem, but they aren't solutions. Amazing that so long after AppEngine's launch you still can't do this. And with a limit of 10 free app IDs per user, you can run out of IDs real fast. Saidi

These are normally subject to legal rules relating to damages such as mitigating (reducing) your losses “Indemnities and guarantees” – are promises to do something (usually pay money) on the happening of a specified event.These are meant to hold a party harmless from all risk associated with the specified event. Indemnities are therefore much wider and involve more risk for the consultant. "Direct v/s Indirect losses" - We often hear talk about direct and indirect or consequential losses or damages. These are widely misunderstood (even among our learned friends - the lawyers cum politicians) and have different meanings in different jurisdictions. Commonly (but incorrectly), there is a tendency to differentiate the two types in terms of the cost of re-instatement or fixing the part that has failed as against purely financial losses such as lost revenues or profits that the customer could have earned had, if for example, the defective software continued to work properly. However, this is often not the correct distinction legally. Under Common law, which was adapted in Kenya, for example, purely financial losses (such as lost profits) can still be classed as “direct” losses so long as they result or “flow” directly from the breach”. Having said that ... a professional should try to limit his /her liability as much as possible. Many jurisdictions prohibit the total exclusion of certain types of liability on the grounds of public policy (e.g. liability for death or personal injury which is as a result of the professional's negligence). It is usual to acknowledge liability for these injuries ... BUT liability for loss of profits, revenue, business and data (“indirect”) should be excluded in the contracts at all times. This is because large claims/losses are very possible here. The customer can always mitigate against such losses by for example paying for redundancy or backing -up or seeking alternative services.Including indirect liability is almost like underwriting/insuring the customer’s business. All remaining liability (“direct”) should be capped. eg.. capping the losses to the value of the consultancy fees or a % of it.The amount of the cap is normally a variable for negotiation. I am not a lawyer but I believe that a professionally written agreement document should follow the below basic principles.. Cover Page .. with a clear title that indicates what the document is all about, customer name, provider's name , logos are optional, Date is optional, one could include a professional picture to make it colorful.. General Information .. Here put in customer details, the customer SPOC contact details, the provider's SPOC contact details, date, document version, contract reference number or codeFinancial Proposal .. here include the prices, clearly indicating the currency, the assumed exchange rate and the payment model, eg One time payment, recurring payment, payment by milestone, or whatever mode u want. Always separate the professional fees from the other charges that are incurred in the engagement. EG "Security consultancy fees = 200,000 ,, Internet access fees = 12,000, travel and accommodation = 30,000. Consultants who incur travel and accommodation expenses should always include a clause indicating that any unforeseen extra expenses that may be incurred in the cause of engagement will be charged to the customer .. something like The foregoing travel and accommodation fees reflects an estimate of activities required to perform the work under this contract, which may vary from the actual time spent, and travel expenses incurred . Unless expressly agreed otherwise, charges shall be incurred on the basis of actual time spent and travel and will be charged to the customer at cost. Description of Product / Service.. Here start with an executive summary of what the deal is all about then describe the product or service as you normally do.Contractual Terms and Conditions .. this is where most of us get a D minus ... This section is the "legal" part of the document if you could call it so .. This section should have the following... A general section with clauses that talk about how payment will be done, the effective date of the contract (eg this contact is effective upon signature), change management and its impact on charges, , assumptions and references to other binding documents if they exist... a previous contract A section on limited liability that completely absolves the provider from liability from in-direct losses and capping liability from direct losses.A confidentiality clause that protects both parties from disclosure of confidential information to third parties .. this is self explanatory .. A clause stating the governing law, the language to be used and the place of arbitration that will be used in case of a dispute This becomes important when u are doing a deal in a foreign country ..eg lets say you were contracted to inspect the UN firewalls in Addis Ababa .. and somehow y'all disagreed .. you will be in more trouble if you had not on the onset argued that you would sign the agreement in Kenya, use Kenya laws, use the English language in a Kenyan court to resolve the dispute ... Can you imagine a Kenyan trying to describe an exploit in Amharic .... :-) (no offense to the Ethiopians) Lastly a signature section saying something like "by signing below, Customer confirms that Provider may commence the work detailed in this agreement and that all its internal requirements for authorizations have been complied with" __________ (customer name, date etc) ___________________ (provider name, date). If we do and it seems to me there is a big story to be told about the Seacom aftermath , my points to you are these : - Take it from me, there is nothing like " it takes time ". Networks simply do not operate in this manner. Contact Seacom office and find out how long does it take to connect a provider. Contact the national fiber operator eg TKL, KDN and see how long it takes to deliver the connection from mombasa to say Nairobi. The assumption is that Seacom would already have notified providers, fiber operators of its intended launch date ( including earlier tests ). So all network operators, providers must have been aware atleast 14 days prior to date of launch. Network operators, service providers do not need any special interface equipment to terminate into Seacom network. The chain of connections is as follows : *Seacom station : National Fiber operator : Network Operator : Service provider : End User*. So a service provider like an ISP does not need to lay their own network to mombasa. - Service providers, network operators must be queried as to why they have not switched over. - Do a survey of public cyber operators and see what they have been told about the fiber and its service availability? Most of them I assume are on TKL connections. I've putting this info on this list for anyone to take it deeper. Sorry, the gravity of this event cannot cannot be left to speculations and assumptions. facts would correct everything. Over and Out!

Now that the "internet" is still not thaat fast, and it looks like local telcos will continue to let us down, maybe we seriously need to rethink the term "local content". Here is why. The Internet, really is an inter connection of computers. it does not reside on the other side of the seacom fiber. We are just anxious because most of the stuff we need is on that other side. (Which is why some bright gurus here are pinging servers in the UK, US or India and complaining about latencies. 1: What if we decided to get a local server farm and host most of the stuff here. (After all the knowledgebase is here). In particular, what if gmail, yahoo and the top 100 sites on alexa were "encouraged" to host something local which then they would tunnel to their wonderful server farms through SEACOM. 2: What if all the sites that the IT guys are talking about were hosted locally, then uploading files would be more an issue of KIEXP than international. Aki, So should we also expect a whole flurry of new software developers with new apps by the weekend ? ;) How many new developers do you think this will bring ? e-commerce sites ? I wait ... as I have been for the past several years. During which time BTW - the price of a 256k has fallen from 25000 shs to 3000shs. Is that still beyond the reach of techies ? Every once in a while you get pleasantly surprised, but where is the revolution ? Seacom just turned on the capacity yesterday. Circuits on the fiber couldn't be mapped before yesterday, and they are still doing that slowly. Testing has also not been completed fully, and most of it begins from yesterday. Interconnect points are just getting ready. IP routes take time to propagate as well, so expect some days for that. It's really a media launch, and over the next week you should expect people to slowly start turning on the capacity. If anyone has played with this hardware as a VPN endpoint, I'd really love to know how many VPN users it can handle. Advice on job change...

Hi guys, I got this job last month in a certain financial institution which is not so big. There are two of us in the IT department, and my partner is not so experienced (I can tell he has limited knowledge in IT, with all due respect to him). I joined as a management trainee, but there is nothing I am learning from my partner. All I have learnt is to do End of Day and Start of Day procedures on the core banking system. On windows administration, I can do a better job that what's been done here. Anyway, I don't mean to crioticize my employer, but I just feel that this job isn't challenging enough. I have sought advice from a few friends, some tell me to move on and others tell me to wait until my probation is over, which sounds logical, but I feel like waiting for my probation to be over would be a waste of time because I am not really building on any experience and besides, I had to stop attending classes for CCNA that I had registered for because I leave work at about 6:30 PM. We'll soon be moving to Westlands, which would mean taking longer to get home, or less time for my studies and stuff like that. So now what do the skunks have to say? I checked both edge services, none are on Seacom yet. Anyone checked safcom? Or for that matter has any ISP done the move. From a network world, this is a major disappointment. ( This is delayed network justice, how long does it take a packet to travel from mombasa to nairobi ).
