Hi guys, I am looking to start a premium rate service (based on an sms short code) for providing content such as Bible Verses, Ringtones, Weather Information and the like. Anyone out there with an idea of what sort of database (and configuration) i would require to set up search a service. I am also looking to partner with a content provider so if anyone knows someone who does (or you do yourself) kindly get me the details ASAP, as soon as possibe. Yu Data Network not satisfactory

Yu are now country wide, according to some advert, but data has issues outside nairobi. Pages frequently time out, or get stuck on loading if you are using a computer, you get stuck on loading pages. After several calls to customer case, still the same issues. Customer care explain how they are new and still sorting out such issues. E-Mail Consultancy : A proposal

Many times we openly share info and/or solutions that would normally costs thousands of Kshs in consultancy costs. There are many of us on this list who belong to this category and even go the extra mile for others to help out, virtually. I think a proposal forward would be to have some sort of consultancy services available via email, else we are selling the ICT sector for free without any benefits of years or experience/knowledge. In anycase, if anyone is stuck, they can always google or bing for results. Just sharing a thought, I hope others have also been thinking about such. Do you think this would defeat the idea of the lists or will it make others lives better? Rgds.

Orange 3g+ and email problems

I've been having some on/off smtp issues and opened some tests over the weekend. Emails can show as sent but are not received by the parties. Some include gmail/yahoo. - Some subnets are blacklisted. This led me to check further on reverses and possibly a root cause : Hostname: g-3-3-0-core-as12455.telkom.co.ke ISP: Kenyan Post & Telecommunications Company Organization: Nazarene University Proxy: None detected - Further checks on dnsbl revealed at least 4 problems. Is this Uni responsible for spam and blacklisting? Orange kenya need to isolate this problem asap.

Androids in Orange Customer Care

This is quite funny: I tried to call 0771n (where n = XXXXXX) and I get the following "The number you have called has been changed. Please call 991 for assistance". Well, because I am calling from a landline, I decide to call Orange CC via 100 since getting through to 991 is a nightmare. I get a lady who sings to me "Welcome to ...." then I tell her my problem. She goes ahead and insists that the number has no problem at all, even without any testing! I tell her that it's the TKL/Orange systems which are telling me there is a problem. It's not anything of my own creation, and her saying all is well is tantamount to opposing what their systems are telling me, because else, my phone call would go through. ...and guess what next? She asks me to tell the contact I was trying to reach to call 100 and tell them if he is having a problem with his phone.LOL What she's not telling me is how to reach this contact! Just made my day, though I wonder if Orange employs a few androids in Customer Care. Of the Telcos in Kenya, I still think Safaricom has better CC staff though they are not the best. Hi good people. I have issues with an acer laptop and all windows os variant. The keyboard and mouse freezes on boot. Its caused by the battery as its dead and the systen cannot get is status and removing the battery is the only remedy. So i want to turn off acpi and see if it will solve the issue os removing ma battery.

Dear All, So I have been thinking lately, the forum has brought together some of the most brilliant minds in ICT in Kenya and around. Which is all good, but now I think somethings are getting out of control. It has been a useful resource but all this is really getting lost is the myriads of abusive language some threads are taking. Now the utility is being dimished by some people, or rather I think it is just one person who goes by many alias. To the moderators/administrators of the forum, it is possible to limit email distribution to those subscribed to the list, prevent cross-posting and somehow place some control on new subscriptions? Maybe you can adapt a by invitation only system where by new members will need to be invited by an existing member. Soon, with the direction the language in this forum is taking, it will become a forum of no value like some other forums I know. Many people are now shying away from contributing for fear of being personally attacked by some characters. Thanks.

Just say someone looking for a CRT and have to just say this:- I was at the IFA'09 exhibition in Berlin last weekend and just couldn't believe how fast TV technology is moving. I mean in Kenya, we are just getting accustomed to the LCD, and then there is (was) LED, and soon Samsung says 3D technology is coming to the TV sets at home. So, what to do, do I dispose my CRT for LCD or wait till prices of LED come out or just wait till next year for the 3D experience?? ./Ok3ch

Onyango, On a point of clarification - though I do not work for KICTANET or KENIC - on EAI-GF I noticed that Vincent had sent an email to Skunkworks, Kenya Internet Users lists and also had the same published in the print media. There were non-IT guys in the forum and they were contributing just as anybody else. So why the fuss? My argument will still be where is the so-called Consumer Rights body? Why didn't they attend the EAI-GF, for instance? Good people, Inasmuch as we want to air our issues, there is a need to work out things right in addressing some things. I, for instance, do not subscribe to any of Safaricom's services, yet I find it quiet worrisome when some of us decide *'I'll spit what I want without caring about the lot around!' *attitude**. There are so many things I can point out about our Telcos, both negative and positive, but how I chose to approach an issue is what matters. We are now heading to attacking personalities in the name of fighting for our rights, yet as I had indicated in the previous email on this thread, lack of a strong consumer rights body, will only make these companies smile all the way to the bank as we try outdoing each other. When you go to fight an elephant, you don't just carry an arrow and a bow, expecting to make a kill, what matters again, is not what you are carrying, but how well you'll be able to overpower it. I need someone to wake me up, if at all I'm asleep, and tell me, when did we air our grievances to the government as a body and were frustrated. Going as lone rangers, will end up as a laughing stock! Let us tone the choice of language we are using here, for God's sake! Hi, everybody. I personally think that Zain back then known as Kencell, could have revolutionised Mobile Money Tranfer in Kenya had they just been a little bit aggresive. It was 2005, when I had an opportunity to work with one of their products known as EVD which was specifically used by scrachcard vendors commonly known as simu ya jamii. Vendors would first get registered by any dealer and then frequently load airtime on the simcard given to them. They would then sambaza you airtime electronically upon your request, that is if you've paid. The EVD system was usually used through a mobile phone and was very simple to use just like the m-pesa. I think m-pesa also inherited from it, the drawback of sending money to the wrong person. Cause at times one would send airtime to the wrong person using the EVD. Having launched such a product in the market, these guyz (KENCELL) shuld have pioneered mobile money transfer cause both the EVD and m-pesa shared the same concept of functionality.

I rilly want to know, or rather understand. How does this per MB billing work? Are you billed exactly per uploaded and downloaded amount of data,or how is it. Because on my EVDO modem if I check the amount of data transfered(downloaded and uploaded), Its not equal to the No. of MBs im considered to have used. Its slightly more. Which data is rily billed or how is it done. And if I buy a 250MB bundle and download a software worth 250 MB, will my account be reading nil in terms of MB remaing.

Need for well trained students

Today I read about the need to train young people in ICTs. But the idea builds on several key assumptions and I wanted to see if members of this group could either confirm or dispel them. Assumption 1: There is a high demand for well educated IT-professionals in the Kenya market? Assumption 2: There are not enough young people who can afford a degree in ICTs, and therefore not enough qualified students to fill all of the jobs? Assumption 3: Providing low-interest loans would help young people get the training they need and supply the market with the talent it demands? Assumption 4: It is difficult to get a loan in Kenya meaning the country lacks enough people with the right ICT training? Assumption 5: Most students who do graduate with a background in ICTs get a job and can easily pay back their loans? Are these assumptions grounded in reality and is this the complete story? Any thoughts or ideas on this matter are most welcome!

Fellow skunks, I hold this issue in very high regard. Our friends at KENIC (http://www.kenic.or.ke) charge about KShs. 4000 for a .ke domain name. (Is it worth it compared to a .com domain name for KShs. 1000?) It seemed reasonable at first when they said that the high cost was meant to recoup their investment. (...and I personally think that this is increasingly becoming an outdated excuse!) Their website states that this would be the situation for two years, which, as you may have noticed, went by long ago. I will word my request to you in a question: How, or rather, what strategy do we use to convince KENIC to reduce the price for a .ke domain name? Over to you skunkers.

The plan is to eventually phase out the agents from collecting revenue on behalf of the Taxman. “Once the new system is fully embraced, tax payers will pay duty directly, instead of relying on agents, some of whom are not trustworthy,” Mr Michael Waweru, KRA commissioner general said in an earlier interview. ------------------- A comment. Importers know what they import and what duties and Kebs pre checks are needed. Then what is there to negotiate when the shipments arrive? I think KRA should go fast pace IT on this project asap, importers pay directly and reduce on clearance times from port leading to less congestion. As long as KRA and govt allow procedure abuses or delays, the exploits cannot stop. My thots..

Since moving to seacom would zuku users advise if its now ok to subscribe to their service. I am a bit jittery about committing equipment costs to a ISP then the service ends up being lousy. Speaking of which is there any form of consumer protection from the CCK against ISPs who promise good speeds but do not deliver but you are bound to a contract and expensive equipment costs ? Kevin
