I have a bone to pick with site admins that require me to register on their site. I already have a mail account and a facebook account. Why do you require me to give my grandmothers details and other unnecessary information just to use a few features on your site. If you require me to identify myself, please use open ID. I have registered in enough sites for my lifetime. If i find one more that doesnt use open ID, i will probably give it a pass. It is an indicator of our ambitions. Ur aware of nyayo pioneer & excitement it caused yet it failed. The prjct can serve as a local case study 4 our ict academicians & researchers. I agree it will cost lots of money & many yrs. But I think it is a worthy cause. For funding kenya ict board & kirdi. The latter has an ict r&d dept. Guys, ever heard of easier said than done...? I bet you all have.. hello skunks, With the introduction by M$ of their Security Essentials, and free for that matter, I am left wondering who are the winners and the losers in this case? Is the Desktop user truly a winner here? Isn't it like trusting the witch to turn around and offer you treatment? (Where I come from, the theory of bewitching is so strong so allow me to use that analogy, for lack of a better one). Are other Desktop AV vendors likely to become 'lUsers'? Let's see: How many of you have opted to deploy M$ Security Essentials on their Desktops as their AV of choice? A few friends have asked me about a good AV and I've always bent towards Kaspersky, but when they freak at the cost (<2k), I tell them that Microsoft now has a free AV for windows, but I still don't quite trust that advise, yet I really can't justify this mistrust given some reviews I am seeing about Security Essentials. The Haiku Operating System.

Hello, I wanted to bring to your attention some interesting operating system that is coming up. It is called Haiku, perhaps you have heard about it. It is based on (backward compatible with) the BeOS Release 6, another operating system that came up in the early nineties that was written from scratch in C++. What is more interesting about it is that it actually has a Microkernel design - more strictly it is a hybrid kernel - and has been known to have the most responsive GUI ever. It was designed to be primarily a "Multimedia platform" thus fully desktop-oriented. The makers of the system claim it is the "Linux of Desktop operating systems" ...... In fact Apple had keen interests on it (BeOS), they actually wanted to use it as a ground for the Macintosh (Version 8 onwards) but because of the pricing made for the system by Be Inc, they decided to acquire NeXT and base the Mac on its variant of B.S.D UNIX a.k.a Darwin (NB: Sir Tim Berners-Lee wrote the Web and run the first Web server on a NEXTStep Machine [info.cern.ch]). All the same Haiku is POSIX compliant, "pervasively multithreaded", has an advanced database-like (journaling) file-system among other things. I have been partly running the alpha-one version and it really feels snappy, quite usable. It can decompress mp3s and MPEG videos nicely, render images including SVGs beautifully and for those of you with strong geek appeals, it has PERL 5 and Python 2.6 for scripting, subversion 1.6 and C++ compilers + gdb to debug applications in case they crash in mid-execution. You can also dis/engage processors & processing cores on the fly by clicking on a button(s) and the kernel will distribute the loads to the available resources splendidly!! You can have a look at it from its site [ http://www.haiku-os.org/ ], the bootable image is about 389 Mb, 145 Mb compressed, and can also boot to the desktop. I thought I would let individuals in these groups know about it because I believe we have a number of strong developers hanging around. Haiku still needs some bug fixes for it to become fully stable. A Kenyan OS

Hi Skunkers, I was just wondering why we can't make our own OS. Preferably we could call it Kenix. It should be POSIX compliant so that it would get global acceptance. For the shel l BASH would be ok but another shell which is object oriented that can compete with microsofts powershell should be considered.The kernel is what should be 100% kenyan contributed by local developers. The rationale 4 a Kenyan os is one that can give the user a kenyan look & feel thro its gui . Anyway these r just my 2 cents worth of thoughts. Any takes. . Regards, Martin Mucheke

Good Day! It is with relief that we welcome the New Land Policy..since as we know land is a very emotive and sensitive issue in Kenya. But even as we are ready do celebrate this new policy which is yet to be discussed in parliament,am sceptical since I have not seen anyway the ministry getting views from the techies the ICT people. You cannot have a land policy without a comprehensive Land Information Systems (LIS) and this is where the good people on the skunkworks can help. Allow me to indulge a little,to explain the problem with the present land ownership scenerio and how they can be solved with an LIS. 1.Legality vs Legitimacy:The present law in Kenya,only looks at the Legality (owning a title deed),whereas it should also look at the legitimacy.For example a person with a title deed,for a land in Mau Forest or Wetland might have a legal document to own that land.But does not have the legitimacy of owning it because it is water catchment area or wetland or school compound.Now with a LIS all land will be document and the information available on a website (with maps).The land will be marked accordingly e.g Wetland,Water Catchment,agricultural land,forest land,road reserve,Industrial development land ,public land and Private Property will also have the lease period and the details of the owner.So in future we will not have a situation where a person buys a land in a water catchment area then asks for compensation.Secondly it will sensitize people when they see people doing funny activities on land that is earmarked for special common good.Even if they go ahead and acquire such land the title can be revoked due to the legitimacy angle.At the moment the Title deed is everything,people can even forge your title deed and once they have it ,its a legal nightmare.Legitimacy issues can also arise when for example a runaway husband sales land that belongs to the family. 2.Ownership Vs Access: The present law in Kenya,give primacy to ownership,but it should also look at access to land.It is alright that you own the land,but is it accessible.What is the point of someone owning 10 of thousands of land while there are squatters as his neighbors.This person should make the land accessible by at least subletting it so that people can at least grow crops.Another example,the somalis can buy the whole of eastleigh if they want...so long as they put the land into projects which will be accessible to all people in terms of shopping mall etc.Tied with the first point then when someone buys land he will be required to state the his intentions.So that we dont have large tracks of land sitting idle.The LIS will make it easier to manage how accessible land is.In all we should have situations where by you can be without land,but you are not landless. Additional Features for the LIS .Search Capabilities.(by function,by person,by institutions,by title number,by unused lands,lease,by location,for sale) .Ability to Pay land rates using mobile payments .Ability to pay tax on land by the amount of acarage etc .Maps Without a transparent LIS then whatever land policy we have is bound to fail. I heard one day...the Lands Minister saying that they require 2 billion to digitize the records.Am sure if we look for a home grown solution most people on this list e.g Alliance Technologies can make such solutions for much less.Secondly isn't that an opportunity for our budding BPOs.?????? NB:Anyway my advise for young people,think about the cyberspace forget land. A good website with monitized content,can cost you less than 200-500k and you can make 200k monthly. It has been interesting times on this list and have learnt much and shared much too. I've been considering a time out for a while now. Though I no longer receive emails to my account, I can follow the postings through the archive. I choose not to drop out completely incase someone on the list was stuck with an issue I felt I could help out on. Today I've known what direction my thots have to go and clearly embarking on that long journey thanks to fellow contributors. I'll still continue with my projects and alert you once something is ready for your views. It was great to see developers and coders come out and make contributions. There is a bigger battle that needs to be looked into and no matter how much patching, firewalling is done, security of sites and code exploits not going to go away that easily. Hi @Solomon, thnks for the fair warning, not to use an infected machine as a development enviroment, though I was wondering why would one do so in the first place. Is there no rules to a production enviroment eg, your friend should also not use the computer for games or internet donwnloads etc :-) Linux, and in common cause of saving development time, after a 3 month wait I just bought Visual Studio 2008 standard as the tool. What would you recommend the time saving, full developed commercial WYSIWYG for linux that is comparable to VS 2008? Why would anyone waste time on typing div tags, table properties etc... Rgds. Hi All, I have 5 VLANs in my network configured in my L3 switch 4500. currently all VLANs can ping and reach each others, means 192.168.3.100 host in my vlan2 can reach 192.168.1.100 which is vlan3. I was one of their first customer @AccessHome and pay through direct debit, so I am really puzzled here. Listers, my apology for the comments if they seem ignorant. ( if you followed my thread on asp hosting, I have a little experience on .asp... ) So I decided to check out some sites and to be amazed by all the developments in the sector, afterall I took a 5 year break and never did a commercial site. So I come across a site that does corporate business web design. Nicely done it is and has all the presentations. I decided to look at source..... and I could not believe it. CSS templates and one can download the templates as a rar files ( usual sites... ) . And source is html.... woaa! I was under the impression that everyone went to .php but seems not. Web design and development is like games development. Needs 2 different talents i.e Web Developer and Graphics artist. So I guess Graphics artist has been replaced by .rar files as templates. My question is : On skunks, are there any web developers / artists and why do they not contribute to the list? As an inspiration to others, where are their works or sites that one can visit and admire? Just wondering... :-)

Speaking at a Microsoft customer event in London this week, BAA CIO Philip Langsdale said the company has been testing Windows 7 and now plans to roll it out across the company. BAA owns and operates seven UK airports, including Heathrow, which handle more than 200 million passengers per year. Langsdale said BAA is planning to invest £60m in IT systems and infrastructure between 2008 and 2012 which will feed into a company-wide effort to reduce operation expenditure by £114m over the same period. "The main purpose is usability - it's less clunky [than Vista] and it's easier for people to use," Langsdale told silicon.com. He added that so far Windows 7 has proved to be reliable and secure, resulting in a lower number of support requests to his IT team, which also has an impact on cost. "The evidence so far suggests it will reduce costs. We haven't done the maths but early indications are that [the number of] helpdesk calls have gone down," he explained. Bringing the whole company onto Windows 7 is also intended to simplify the technology platform across the business so that it can be better managed and fits with BAA's strict governance requirements. BAA still has a lot of work to do with its Windows 7 roll out as it discovered that 95 per cent of its desktop and laptop estate were below the spec required to run the operating system. Langsdale said the company knew a significant hardware refresh was required and so the Windows 7 implementation will be carried out in a phased fashion to fit with this. Langsdale added the company needs to take a "cautious" approach to the Windows 7 roll out due to financial constraints. "We're going to replace [hardware] over a period of 15 months," he said. Langsdale's team has been testing Windows 7 using virtualisation technology from Citrix, which they found works well, and the team plans to use it for the wider roll out work. Internet Access Restriction

Hi guys, I'm looking for an application that I can install on my server to restrict internet access. Something that works kinda like.. users 1-10, except user 9, only access the internet before or after working hours. User 9 only has access to a certain website at all hours. I have tried googling but what I'm getting isn't really helping, so I thought to turn to the list. Any advice? P.S. I have installed AnalogX proxy, but I don't think it has all that capability. Hi All, I have 5 VLANs in my network configured in my L3 switch 4500. currently all VLANs can ping and reach each others, means 192.168.3.100 host in my vlan2 can reach 192.168.1.100 which is vlan3. I want to create an ACL in my L3 switch to deny the Vlans to access or ping each other, I just want them to access my servers 172.16.1.10 - 172.16.1.30 which are in the default Vlan1. can someone advise me which the commands and where to apply them in the L3 switch. I have just confirmed from the Zain Customer Service desk that indeed their data service has been down since 10:45 can you imagine? I saw the E icon disappear from my fone and I have not been able to access any site or services. What's even more surprising is the fact that there's no one on skunks who's raised the red flag on this. Why the double standard, we are keen to jump on Safcom for the shortest downtime and let Zain get away with this? It is apparent that we seriously need another mobile data service. Hello Skunks, I have a situation where there are two office locations connected to each other using point-to-point link via a local provider. The point to point link capacity is 1Mbps. What is going on at Zuku?

Does anybody have any information they can share on what is going on at Zuku? For the whole of Monday and Tuesday (today) the speeds have been terrible. It looks like at some point their phone lines were also affected as yesterday afternoon their customer service phone lines were unreachable. Every time I call I get a different response from the customer service team. The first time I called they said it was problem with the base station, then router integration, now they say that everything should be work as normal but it is clear that sometime is still wrong. Thanks y'all With this new info, I'm more enlightened and ready for round 2. I will contact the ISPs, tell them I need to link to KIXP as I would like traffic limited to the local "Internet", tell them I want XXX dedicated and reliable bandwidth and ask for a quote (with no freakin hidden stuff!). They always piss me off when they don't include taxes, kwani they plan to pay it on my behalf! I was at AK some days back and the lady dealing with this told me that a local loop doesnt really mean internet that's restricted to Kenya, but a connection between e.g. branches of a company/organization. Therefore if I wanted to buy bandwidth to host local content, which would be restricted to Kenyan traffic, then I would buy at the same rate as international bandwidth. If that's the case then I think this hurts the budding local content industry. So the point: Define local loop? o_O?

I don't think that it's a case of double standards for the simple reason that one would complain on the outage of a service that they used. I cried foul on saf jana coz I use it, just as u did Zain coz you use it. Am sure you wouldn't know if AK had issues if ur not on it.

Hello skunk(s)ettes. Im sure every right thinking skunker has something planned for "this big technology" and grand ideas of how they are going to break the barriers by some innovation of sorts. I have been considering setting up an ad server service and would like to know if anyone here has done anything like this. The concept looks easy from my perspective. --> Almost everyone i know has a website they are hoping to monetize someday, catering to some unique market segment. Some big, some small. --> This service collects (pools) these websites, arranged according to the categories. Each webmasters selects a zone where served ads will appear. --> The service approaches advertisers to advertise on a broad spectrum of zones. and pay according to agreed terms. --> the service then pays the webmasters using some mobile money transfer of sorts, from as low as Ksh 100. Guys, I'm looking to the official Samsung Official Distributors in Kenya and googling does not help at all. There was a company by the name Perragon (or something like that) which marketed Samsung products in Kenya. This company was based @ Capital Centre and at Upper Hill (can't remember the exact place). ASP and hosting in kenya

Some background : After almost a 5 year break, I can see many things have advanced in the asp world. Some of the successful projects that I created on asp : - Organization Contacts Database. Front end html including low traffic overhead over slow WAN links. Html database provided add, edit and full search by name, country, city etc. Despite access's 2GB limit, over 7000 contacts were stored into Db. I'm told sharepoint made the DB obsolete 2 year ago but is missed... - Freelancers expenses and budget reporting system. Front end html used to collect form data from various departments that deal with freelancers. Backend Ms Access which I setup with queries to prompt for freelancer name and month, provided detailed cost analysis of payments due and a gross summary of total budgets spent monthly/annual on such. Am told after 3 years of use, a complete HRM system replaced it... - Photo archive system. Full searchable, same concept front html with resize thumbnails and fields. Diffcult system as I still needed to master the thumbnails generator as DB size grew over the 2GB limit very quickly. Okay, moving on : For my future web/data projects, is SilverLight and asp.net the best to go forward with or is Ajax because so much has changed. Things like CSS are now there. And is any kenyan hosting provider able to do asp hosting or should I just use one of the many companies who do it on the net? I'd hate to have to start from scratch on php and mysql, just because of lamps ease. Adv is welcome. :-) Rgds.

Live box and coverage and boosting signals

Question: My neighbor just got the Live box on 512. Livebox itself is wifi enabled but I living on the next block of apartments 50m aerial distance cant see the signal unless I go out on my balcony and even then it is a poor signal. There is line of sight btw his house and mine. Will plug in a Linksys router to the livebox and placing it on his balcony do any better? Or is there an easy way to boost the signal?

Kenya Population = 40M. Do we have any major PHP, Java, .Net or Electronics Conferences to speak of? Has poor turn out discouraged organizers and investors? If some in the US have brought their developer conference prices to USD 99.00 per head per day (http://stackoverflow.carsonified.com/ and http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2009/05/12.html) am sure we Kenyans can pull off good quality tech conferences for about 3-4K per head per day. Lower bandwidth costs will help more of us connect online but we need more. Considering traditional media is so expensive to advertise in we need like 100 web sites we can advertise on - barter trade on.
