websites blockage

I was in Bamako, Mali this passed week and browsing internet was not business as usual. I found out that most sites which are not considered to be of "business related substance" are blocked using websense. This was confirmed when i asked around and guys there are really frustrated. Apparently theres a consortium between Mali, Uganda, Tanzania, India and Nigeria thats effecting the blockage. Anybody experienced this elsewhere? Njaci

Its too quiet at skunks today, Thought I would post this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdlEA3cjtRM You can buy an FM Transmitter which can charge your phone e.g iPhone as you play music - all you have to do is tune it to the specified FM bandwidth.. And the FM transmitter will charge your phone as you listen to your selected playlist from your phone hardisk/ iPod drive... The obvious advantage is that you dont have to burn *or* buy Mp3 CDs - but can carry your office music around with you... We also have blue-tooth pairing but the costs are higher. === Someone suggested that you can avoid all these costs with a back to back standard audio jackpin and all you have to do is connected one end to your phone and the other end to your car stereo or house radio - then using the 'Aux' function on the main radios, your ipod/iphone music will be amplified.. I am yet to test this as a truth - but his option will cost you no more than Ksh. 50 /- if you buy your jackpins at Luthuli. w/regards Stephen N.

Young job seekers have always faced this dilemma. In today's shrinking job market, people with years of experience also struggle with it. Whether they face the reality of a layoff, or merely the threat of one, many older workers are trying to reinvent themselves in order to become marketable in a changed economy. *Whether you're launching your career or trying to change its direction, you can get around this Catch-22 with some creativity and humility. * Here's how I did it: I was a clinical psychologist in a community mental health center. It was professionally satisfying and financially unrewarding. I decided it was time to make more money. I would become a business consultant. Imagine my surprise to learn that I could not find a single company eager to hire me. Apparently, they couldn't see that my ability to counsel sexual offenders was a transferable skill! I couldn't get business experience without getting hired. I couldn't get hired without business experience. What to do? What Am I missing - Telkom ADSL?

A friend of mine is connected to the Internet (yes!) via Telkom ADSL (32/128kbps), but sending out an e-mail is a nightmare! I have tested using Outlook Express/MS Outlook on XP SP3. Machine is clean -- kabisa! No worms. I believe smtp.jambo.co.ke is the preferred SMTP server, and the closest. Skunks i have a tarred directory in a linux server which is like 300gb and i need to untar a specific sub directory (i can untar the whole dir but i simply dont have the space) in that tar directory..... can any skunkhead out there think of a command that can put me out of my predicament...google has failed me so far and the clock is ticking

Tangaza is an audio based social networking project of the Nokia Research Center currently in its beta phase. With Tangaza you can create networks/channels/groups such as friends, family or workmates. You can then announce to your friends, family or workmates what you have been up to this week, the pub you may be visiting this weekend or what time a conference presentation will begin. The system allows you to setup up to 9 different groups that you can tangaza to. Once a tangaza is sent out to a group, notification is sent to the members of the group via flashing. You can then flash back the system and it will call you. Simply follow the instructions after that... We would appreciate it if you could try out the service and tell us what you think, especially about its usefulness... and/or usability. Zain Kenya introducing two data packages

In a statement on Monday, managing director Rene Meza said the arrival of the fibre optic cable in Kenya has elicited sharp increase in awareness of data opportunities. “Zain Kenya has recognised this demand and is offering Kenyans a wide variety of flexible mobile data products to choose from” he said. In the package, subscribers can download up to 500MB for Sh1,250 and Sh1,750 for a one GB download ( BD )

Hi all I just saw a tweet from whiteafrican ( whom I presume is on this forum) who has just confirmed via personal test that Paypal is now supporting ALL Visa Electron Debit cards issued in Kenya. Is that the case. I want to run some tests with my DTB card to buy a digital download and see if it works. Kevin

I Suggest to follow the harmonized draft suggestions Why dont we democratically decide what is OT and what is nOT? I find myself going through the following 1. Desire to post on skunkworks 2. Writes email 3. Considers if email is offtopic or offensive 4. Re reads email 5. Decides its not worth it 6. Deletes email and moves 7. Rants and Raves at reguation on other forums or facebook :-) Why dont we democratically self regulate? Im a techie but working in a totally unrelated field. I feel targetted yet ive been an ardent participant on skunkworks.....I particularly enjoy some off topic posts , I detest political posts or religious ones.....cant we just agree? It may be Wifi / Wimax, it may even be erratic at times. But when its there, its better than a LAN of yesteryears. The offer has been divided into six global geographical zones with each zone having different call rate charges. In the new tariff structure, subscribers calling to the USA, UK (Fixed), India and China which is in zone one will make their calls at Sh10 representing a more than 70 discount. Callers to zone 2 covering Australia, Uganda and Tanzania will enjoy their calls at Sh15 while those in zone 3 covering Europe, UK mobile, Middle East, Rest of Africa and Asia will be charged at a rate of Sh20. Zones 4-6 also offer very competitive discounts on these destinations. “Due to popular demand and requests for this kind of tariff this festive season, we are happy to heed our subscribers’ calls and rollout a discounted international rate…to keep in touch with family and friends in US, UK, India, China and Australia amongst other destinations,” said the firms chief executive Mickael Ghossein. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Why are Telcos doing this? They are all using Voip gateways and still making more than a 1000% per cent profit on each international route. Cost for a premium voip call to UK, USA landline is around 2 Kshs, so why still charge Ksh 20/- for the same service? In fact Safcom is quite "guilty" of using voip for a long time while labelling its services as something else. Its use of voip was so evident in int'l callers Ids and also the sat delays. Since Safcom and the others have ideas on " one stop " services and want to conatin the ICT market, think it is time that skunks operated their own commercial voip gateway and made international services cheaper to kenyans. Its too easy....... Anyone? :-)

To the Windows and Mac world, the end of Larrabee may not matter. They have plenty of advanced graphics options. That's not true for Linux users, who rely upon Intel's integrated graphics for the vast majority of their needs. Larrabee, which was Intel's program to compete with standalone graphics processor unit (GPU) chips from Nvidia and AMD, was expected to include Intel's usual support for open source operating systems. That would have made Larrabee the choice for desktop Linux users, especially those working against virtualized servers. Alas, it was not meant to be. Yesterday, Intel said the project was being discontinued, having earlier indicated that Larrabee was behind schedule. MIT wins Pentagon prize in social networking contest

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) has won a 40,000-dollar prize for using social networking tools to identify the locations of 10 large weather balloons in a contest sponsored by the Pentagon's research agency. The MIT Red Balloon Challenge Team needed fewer than nine hours to identify where the eight-foot (2.43-meter) red balloons were tethered across the United States. The "Network Challenge" contest was sponsored by the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to mark the 40th anniversary of ARPANet, the pre-cursor to what today is known as the Internet. ARPANet took its name from the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), which was established in 1958 following the launch a year earlier of Sputnik by what was then the Soviet Union. ARPA was the original name of DARPA, the Pentagon's central research and development organization. "DARPA salutes the MIT team for successfully completing this complex task less than nine hours after balloon launch," DARPA director Regina Dugan said in a statement after the Boston-based university won Saturday's contest. DARPA did not say how the MIT won the competition. According to The Washington Post, the MIT team allotted 4,000 dollars to each balloon. The first person to spot a balloon would be awarded 2,000 dollars, the Post said, with smaller amounts going to other informants. According to DARPA, the goal of the Network Challenge was to explore how "broad-scope problems can be tackled using social networking tools." It said it aimed to look at such issues as mobilization, collaboration, and trust in diverse social networking constructs.

After all of the trouble the personal computer industry has had with Microsoft's original Windows NetBIOS ports 137 through 139, it is difficult to imagine or believe that Microsoft could have actually made things significantly worse with their replacement port 445 . . . but they did. Sharing me thots. - Building owners cannot stop tenants from aquiring internet access or other services that they cannot provide in the first place. - Some building owners are providing free internet access. Without a valid license from CCK, they cannot provide any telco services even if they are free. The freeness is covered under value added services that the building owners are commercially using to enhance services to its tenants. Thus, are the services managed ? Secondly, the issue of using an ISP to distribute services into buildings can lead to exclusivity problems. Does it mean that an ISP can lock out a competitor in the said presmises? - CCK need do a survey of all the connected buildings. This affair is not a commercial issue. The telecom bad business practises by building owners will lead to a severe lack of investments into infrastructure. If a building if found to be delivering internet services ( unless through ISP, and also the ISP cannot have an exclusive deal with building owners ), they are in breach of internet service provisions. Study: MySQL Use to Drop Under Oracle Ownership

Chris Kanaracus, IDG News Service Chris Kanaracus, Idg News Service – Fri Dec 4, 12:50 pm ET Usage of the open-source MySQL database is set to decline if Oracle succeeds in buying the software's owner, Sun Microsystems, according to new data released by analyst firm The 451 Group on Friday. The firm polled 347 open-source software users. While 82.1 percent of respondents use MySQL today, that figure will drop to 72.3 percent by 2014, the study found. Fifteen percent said that if Oracle buys Sun, they would be less inclined to use MySQL. Only 6.3 percent indicated they would be more likely to use the database under Oracle's stewardship. Oracle announced plans to buy Sun in April, but the deal has been held up while European authorities conduct an antitrust review. Officials there have expressed particular concern over the fate of MySQL under Oracle's ownership. But some observers have argued that MySQL and Oracle's own database aren't direct competitors, meaning Oraclewould have little reason to stifle it. In addition, MySQL's code base would live on through offshoot projects like MariaDB. According to the 451 Group study, MariaDB usage is expected to rise from zero today to 3.7 percent of all users by 2014, according to the study. PostgreSQL usage will get a bump as well, growing from 27.1 percent of all users to 30.5 percent by 2014. As for MySQL, some respondents want it to be maintained outside of Oracle. 32.6 percent called for it to be given to an independent organization that would further its development. Still, only 4.3 percent said Oracle should be made to sell the database off to another software company. "We do not believe that Oracle would see any of the alternatives to divesting MySQL as any less of a last resort and we do not expect Oracle to offer any concessions," 451 Group analyst Matthew Aslett said in a statement. "However, we believe that Oracle might be more inclined to open up the development of the MySQL database under its own terms in order to encourage more widespread adoption." Meanwhile, Oracle's bid to buy Sun recently received a potential boost from prominent open-source legal expert Eben Moglen, founder and executive director of the Software Freedom Law Center. Moglen sent a letter to the European Union on Nov. 19, telling regulators the open-source license used by MySQL, General Public License Version 2, provides adequate protection for parties outside Oracle to develop and redistribute MySQL. "Without expressing any opinion on any other aspect of the Commission's ongoing merger investigation, I believe that the issues raised concerning the GPLv2 status of the MySQL codebase do not warrant a conclusion that this transaction threatens significant anti-competitive consequences," he wrote in part. Moglen issued the opinion after a request from Oracle's legal team, according to a statement.

Why Open Source Phones Still Fail

It's a great niche gadget. But the idea that free, open-source solutions will sweep the mobile world is just as doomed in the U.S. as the idea of popular, open-source desktop PCs—in this case, because mobile networks don't welcome the unexpected, and they don't welcome geeks. The joy of the open-source world is the joy of the unexpected. Nothing really goes according to plan, because there isn't one plan; there are a lot of plans. Creativity bubbles up from the grass roots. Many projects fail, but some become very disruptive. Wireless network planners hate the unexpected. They hate disruptive. They didn't expect how much iPhone users would surf the Web, and look where that's gotten them. Phone manufacturers have been toying with Linux for years, for reasons that have nothing to do with open-source philosophy or communities. Non-smartphones typically use simple operating systems, which either aren't capable of running modern applications or don't have large developer communities. For years, the use of Linux was viewed as a way to leverage a large developer base and a modern kernel for midrange phones. Most of those attempts failed. Motorola tried to replace its ancient, proprietary P2K platform with Linux, but ended up casting it off and returning to P2K. The LiMo Foundation tried to create a common Linux platform for midrange phones for a while, but none of its devices has broken through in the U.S. It seems that U.S. manufacturers and carriers just don't see enough advantage in Linux to bother putting a new system through the painful approval process here. With one exception, of course: Android. Android is a Linux-based OS, although it doesn't sign on to that namby-pamby free, open-source philosophy. Third-party apps on Android (unless you kick the phone into developer mode) are sandboxed into a little Java virtual machine and locked into a single internal memory partition. That's because while Linux the OS—the kernel, the memory manager—is attractive to phone manufacturers, Linux the philosophy—users banding together ad hoc to create new things—is anathema to wireless carriers. *Living in Fear* You can hate the wireless carriers all you want. Thing is, they're genuinely scared. They seem to consider their networks to be fragile, gossamer things, able to collapse in a strong breeze (or under the weight of a bunch of iPhone users.) I've become convinced that they don't cap your Internet connection at 5 GB out of greed. They cap it because if too many people use too much data—poof, it all goes down. This has made carriers panicky about any uses they haven't pre-approved. Thus, we have the rather restricted nature of the iPhone App Store and the Android and BlackBerry platforms. You just aren't going to get U.S. carriers signing on to the philosophical parts of the Linux platform—experimentation, collaboration, and the unexpected. Network planners wake up in cold sweats in the middle of the night when faced with "the unexpected." No carrier wants geeks. Geeks use up a lot of network resources, try to find ways around rules, and create problems for tech support. Every time a carrier has flirted with geeks, it has backed away. Helio was originally conceived as a "power user's carrier," but it did an unexplained about-face and decided to go for the social-networking youth when it launched. T-Mobile did a similar thing a few years ago, changing its theme from "get more" to "stick together." And Sprint sent out messages attracting geeks from time to time, but in recent years, it has backed away too, doing things like preventing tethering on handsets. "But what about the Nokia N900?" you ask. "And for that matter, what about iPhone jailbreakers and the people who put Android phones into developer mode?" It's always been possible to fly under the radar; there are a few dozen OpenMoko<http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/zd/tc_zd/storytext/246552/34307354/SIG=12s…>owners out there who can vouch for it. The networks can take a few mavericks that are willing to pay high prices, seek out obscure sales channels, or risk turning their phones into doorstops through jailbreaking. But the carriers know that as long as they subsidize phones, they'll control the phones are sold en masse. And those aren't going to be open devices. So geek phones will never be mainstream, but a fortunate confluence of events might get the N900 into more people's hands soon. Regular readers of my columns know that right now, I'm celebrating T-Mobile for offering no-contract plans that don't bake in a device subsidy. T-Mobile is also building a lot of new network capacity right now, and it doesn't seem to be as laden with heavy data users as AT&T or Verizon. It's no coincidence that the N900 comes with T-Mobile's 3G bands rather than AT&T's. T-Mobile could start stocking unsubsidized N900s to show a different way of thinking from the other major carriers. The carrier could flirt with the geeks to boost its profile, attracting developers and creative types. Maybe this would give the number four carrier a leg up. Geeks may finally find their wireless carrier after all

Sometimes back someone in this forum shared a link to bdafrica.com about plans by the government to introduce ethanol as a mandatory blend to petrol. and allusion was made that this is going to make it cheaper. Ive been racking my brain trying to decide if this was a superb idea or just something they copy pasted with little regard to facts on the ground. FACT 1: current production of ethanol is exhaustively sold to other markets. (industrial spirit, beverage spirits both locally and regionally). Demand at the moment is higher than supply. FACT 2 Ethanol as currently sold costs about 60 Ksh before tax. (last time i asked a barrel was coming to about 55). To blend ethanol with gasoline, it needs to be 99 percent pure. The ethanol sold is 94.6, it needs to go through molecular sieves to remove the water that remains cause it cant be removed by simple distillation. Now add the following to the cost: transport, shipping & handling, TAXES, the volume decrease in removing the 4 percent water and processing costs. FACT 3: Ethanol has a higher octane , (burns slower) and thus will decrease overall kick of the E15 resultant fuel. which means youll need more by up to a factor of 5 percent. FACT 4: Mumias, by far the largest sugar factory is planning to put a 25 million liter plant, we need 250 million to enforce an E5 (5 percent ethanol). Assuming its even profitable, what happens to mumias' other core business. LAST BUT NOT LEAST. As long as there is a price difference in ethanol blended fuel and ordinary fuel, and as long as both exist in kenya side by side. it will be a matter of time before it dies a natural death. (its like the whole project for subsidized maize flour they tried in slum areas of nairobi). A Skunk's Recommendation: 1: City council to ban any petrol vehicles in CBD, just cap it and say only public transportation vehicles allowed in the city are those that run on ethanol. 2: Whole of government to run on ethanol. (then they can even retain their +1800cc guzzlers. 3: any other skunk suggestion... -- Someone in Kenya cares about the environent. http://www.cra-africa.info

@Murigi, for some people like me who are studying C #.net and probably a hobbyist for another 2-4 years, can you please clarify why should one focus more on asp.net ( web applications ) rather than windows forms applications. I personally see the web as something that is harmful to programming as it is very limiting but I may be mistaken. Is the web going to merge with desktop anytime soon? I saved quite an amount with Old Mutual and later realized that something is wrong. I saved for like two years and everytime I called - they said that you keep saving and fruits will be seen after 5 or more years. A lawyer looked at the policy document and decided that it was absolutely wak ! There were no promises to uphold the contract, terminate or protect your investment, as promised by word of mouth. I tried to quit - then they would tell you one thing by mouth as how to "gracefully" exit - in terms you find acceptable by mouth - but when it came to paper work, they did calculations that lost me over 50% of my savings. If you know anyone in these "investments schemes" or you are in one yourself with Old mutual, be ware. An official iPhone store on Taobao.com<http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/pcworld/tc_pcworld/storytext/twoweeks5ipho…>, the biggest Chinese e-commerce Web site similar to eBay, has sold just two 8GB iPhones and three 16GB iPhones, according to figures on the site. China Unicom is also selling iPhones through its own Web site, which does not list sale figures. But Taobao is China's top online retail site and many users turn to it to buy items like mobile phones and laptops. The China Unicom iPhones have to compete with iPhones brought into the country from abroad, which users have bought since long before the official handset arrived. iPhones bought outside China have Wi-Fi, which was removed from the China Unicom iPhones to comply with local regulations. The official handset is also more expensive than iPhones bought elsewhere. To load them as a modem automatically, install the package usb-modeswitch. For fedora, yum install usb-modeswitch. It switches the modems from cdrom to usb mode. You also need to disable the SIM pin too, I think. Memory and Firefox Problems

I know someone having serious memory issues. The memory completely filled up and can see what is using it. Firefox refuses to show images, (and Tab Close buttons) then keeps flashing 'low memory' message. I don't quite know if it's a worm or some kind of memory leak. Now that Zain are back in business with a newer sexier modem and new bundles, for those trying to set them up on Linux, you see them as a Cdrom. To load them as a modem automatically, install the package usb-modeswitch. For fedora, yum install usb-modeswitch. It switches the modems from cdrom to usb mode. You also need to disable the SIM pin too, I think. DHL have introduced a concept called the Easy Shop designed at clients who'd like to do online purchase. It works as like this: - 1) Go to any DHL Service Center and register (in person). You'll be required to pay up Ksh. 2320 2) You'll get an account number and a US Address which you will use as the shipping address whenever you make online purchases. 3) Your merchandise will be sent to this address and you will be notified upon arrival and dispatch from the US. 4) The tariff charged is a minimum of Ksh 4118 +VAT for 1.5 KG and below. Thereafter you'll be charged Ksh. 500 for every half KG +VAT of course have to add the respective KRA Duties and Levies. 5) The items will then be cleared from customs according to procedure and delivered to the service center.
