I know my subject line sounds like agreeing to Disagree but my problem is ... I cant access www.martin.com while logged on to the domain martin.com in a windows network, On other networks where the domain server is not present the site works perfectly. Tracer results end after one hop... resolving to the domain server. I have tried redirecting to martin.com on the IIS server hosted the domain server... which worked for a few hours ... but since then i have been getting connection timed out. Safaricom bundle disappearing

I seem to have a problem with Safaricom mobile broadband. By the time I was buying a 300 mb bundle yesterday, I was doubting that the one I had last had been used up, yet I could not connect. Now after just one day, my 300 mb bundle has gone. Yet i have not done anything out of the ordinary. This used to last me about 2 weeks, at times 3. There is no way for me to check my usage where I use it (Fedora 11). Is this really normal or is it just me? Alex at this point I want to join your Association... Evans

The answer to the first question may be a reluctant yes, but the answer to the second question is a resounding and definitive *no*. I was struck by this beautifully written piece<http://eddiesguy.blogspot.com/2007/06/creating-my-own-personal-hell.html>which explains *the dangers of programming alone*: Some folks have claimed that [working alone] presents a great opportunity to establish your own process. In my experience, *there is no process in a team of one*. There's nothing in place to hold off the torrents of work that come your way. There's no one to correct you when the urge to gold-plate the code comes along. There's no one to review your code. There's no one to ensure that your code is checked in on time, labeled properly, unit tested regularly. There's no one to ensure that you're following a coding standard. There's no one to monitor your timeliness on defect correction. There's no one to verify that you're not just marking defects as "not reproducible" when, in fact, they are. There's no one to double-check your estimates, and call you on it when you're just yanking something out of your ass. There's no one to pick up the slack when you're sick, or away on a business trip. There's no one to help out when you're overworked, sidetracked with phone calls, pointless meetings, and menial tasks that someone springs on you at the last minute and absolutely must be done right now. There's no one to bounce ideas off of, no one to help you figure your way out of a bind, no one to collaborate with on designs, architectures or technologies. You're working in a vacuum. And in a vacuum, no one can hear you scream. If anyone's reading this, let this be a lesson to you. Think hard before you accept a job as the sole developer at a company. It's a whole new kind of hell. If given the chance, take the job working with other developers, where you can at least work with others who can mentor you and help you develop your skill set, and keep you abreast of current technology. Working alone is a temptation for many desperate software developers who feel trapped, surrounded by incompetence and mismanagement in the desert of the real. Working alone means complete control over a software project, wielding ultimate power over every decision. But working on a software project all by yourself, instead of being empowering, is paradoxically * debilitating*. It's a shifting mirage that offers the tantalizing promise of relief, while somehow leaving you thirstier and weaker than you started. Like many programmers, I was drawn to computers as a child because I was an introvert. The world of computers-- that calm, rational oasis of ones and zeros-- seemed so much more inviting than the irrational, unexplainable world of people and social interactions with no clear right and wrong. Computers weren't *better* than people, exactly, but they were sure one heck of a lot easier to understand. Computing in the early, pre-internet era was the very definition of a solitary activity. Dani Berry, the author of M.U.L.E., sums up with this famous quote: <http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000306.html> *"No one ever said on their deathbed, 'Gee, I wish I had spent more time alone with my computer.'"* But we've long since left the days of solitary 8-bit programming behind. What good are nifty coding tricks if you can't show them off to anyone? How can you possibly learn the craft without being exposed to other programmers with different ideas, different approaches, and different skillsets? Who will review your code and tell you when there's an easier approach you didn't see? *If you're serious about programming, you should demand to work with your peers*. There's only so far you can go in this field by yourself. Seek out other smart programmers. Work with them. Good evening Skunks, A relative recently travelled to Bangkok and bought 2 copies of Windows 7 Professional to upgrade their systems. Handing over the packages to me handle the upgrade I notice a BIG RED warning on the cover “Activation Restrictions. Distribution and required activation must occur n Southeast Asia.” Now there was a time when Ngumo was called Mogadishu (before eclyee stole the name) but I have never heard to it referred too as SE Asia so clearly we are in a fix! Anyone with any experience when trying to activate these Geo Restricted Windows products? Since Africa is lower in the MS food chain that SE Asia it would make sense for activation from Africa to be recognised ama? Has anyone tried installing one of thwse Geo restricted products before?Is there any point opening and using these installation disks? (We will leave the discussion on madness of Geo restricting software activation for another day!) The flare-ups doing rounds about OTs and adverts got me thinking. Instead of the shoutings among skunks, I would love to be given a chance to put some restrictions, code-wise. That would ensure no more OTs and the subsequent shouting march. I believe there is an extensive use of Python??!!?? That will come in handy for me as I'm taking great leaps to mastering Python. Whats with safaricom? They tell me i do not have sufficient funds. I load Ksh 250, then they tell me in the sms ,You have Ksh 268 balance (as in they were hiding the 18 bob????) Now they tell me i dont have insufficient fund so i should okoa jahazi, I try to and they tell me I dont qualify ( because my account is not at 0) But when I try send an sms or call they say its empty.... DTB shortage or not, it is an eventuality that supplies will fill the shops so its a question of when not if etc. And the shortage or lack of has its advantages, gives time to developers to match delivery times. 3 serious things that I see long term, I share : - EPG ( the biggest development project ever ). There is an chance for developers to work with agencies and others to standardize on the EPG format. If developers and the project get this right, there can be a mutual agreement on a single EPG channel carrying data, a cost saving system for TV channels. That;s where a marketter comes in. Are the stations interested or will they buy from vendors out there? - A dedicated shopping channel ( An inter-active TV channel that will allow people to shop via TV. ) - A dedicated Entertainment channel ( That content will need menu driven functions, reply via sms etc ) I'm not sure whether to focus on 2010 Developer year or start work on this DTV project with others. Gentlemen, Ladies : We are now a point where we should be looking ahead ( most new year resolutions don't make it, the subject line one should not be one of them ) to what we plan for next year. As is so evident from the server contributions thread that a common cause and unity can overcome many things. Moving on, 2 very important events for the calendar next year : BarCamp & DevCon. I've already set aside a personal contribution of Kshs 10,000/- for BarCamp and this amount will be available as soon as BarCamp organizers are good to go. However the above events are not even close enough to what we should be achieving and we are cheating ourselves if we think so. I suggest we also do these : a) Creation of Development community mailing list on new skunks server b) Create budgets ( idea contributed by Murigi ) to allow the events to happen. c) Creation of a prize for Top Developer of the Year ( financial prize of say eg Ksh 100,000 . We will have to find a way for this ) d) Liase more with KICTB or any other agencies who are willing and share the same targets. e) Work done by Strathmore should also be added to the Devs list above I'm going to ensure that the Dev Community idea takes off or if there is one already, will try my level best to support it. ( I've already shelved 3 projects that were due, they can wait. The bigger picture is much worse... ) I've been very critical of local Devs and this was to ascertain where we are at and what happened with the Nokia results hardened my resolve. So don't take it personally, without criticism we think we are perfect? Well SA kicked our a..ses outright on things that would have been done quite easily here. This is unacceptable and a lame excuse for not doing enough. Support each project and please add your thots, way forward, ideas. This is old news (the VIA OpenBook @ http://www.viaopenbook.com/) but it triggered some "new" questions in mind: - how feasible is it for a public-private-partnership (PPP) to setup a fabrication/assembly plant using the reference designs? - would the (eventual) cost be lower than off-the-shelf netbooks? - is the boost to the local knowledge economy worth the risks involved? - would anyone buy the units? Or are Kenyans too beholden to brand names (HP, Toshiba etc)? - is this a camouflaged reinvention of the wheel? - are there times when other factors justify reinventing portions of a wheel? What factors might those be? Weapons, mainly a high density laser able to cut through metal, or sharp tentacles to cut through human tissue 5. Self termination, able to use its energy to power another machine and in the process "kill" itself 6. Able to become part of a swarm and thus act as a member of a group 7. Susceptible to EMP 8. Able to have a primary objective; search and destroy or just explode, but which can change at any time on instructions from main control 9. Able to come up with a strategy based on real life scenario, e.g. best method of attack 10. Easy to mass produce So, what technology is missing to build one? 1. I recently heard about the demise of Adam magazine and another tourism on- can't remember the name. No doubt these mags had gathered a number of fans and its sad to see them go. So I was thinking how about having them online instead of print? I gave this suggestion to some pals and one of them said "Adam is a magazine I flip through on a nice Sunday afternoon at home at a leisurely pace, doubt I'll take the time to read it on line." SO my question is- Is online a viable option especially in Kenya and are there any success stories or otherwise? isn't this a good local content project? "External Regulations" is simply USA regulations. Moneybookers is British and they dont have the ridiculous regulations the US have. Do you know USA is trying to go for people with Swiss Bank accounts? Did you know Sun/Java has started a model like the Apple or Ovi stores and they call it the Java Store. It is only open to USA developers to sell their Apps. Developers from a few other countries are allowed to use the store but can't sell Apps to USA customers but can only give free Apps for download. I think Intel's dominance is troubled because of 3 companies: AMD, Nvidia and ARM. The first 3 market segments can work well with a Pentium 4, let's even make it Dual Core processors (Not even Quad Cores). The Home computer segments doesn't seem to be growing and might not significatly grow in the future because Hand Held/Mobile devices are becoming more powerful and Home entertainment systems are becoming more of computers than their traditional role. Mobile devices and Home entertainment systems are normally refered to as embedded systems. ARM processors dominate these systems. Large scale servers vary. Picking from one of the example uses mentioned in the article, rendering is mentioned as one of the optimized applications. AMD was probably smart to acquire ATI because rendering nowdays is an issue of GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) which is dominated by Nvidia and ATI. Therefore when it comes to graphics applications, CPUs are definately not as significant as GPUs. Nvidia has even gone ahead to have PPUs (Physics Processing Units). This further reduces the significance of CPUs. Let see how "greedy" we can be. Based on that let us see what capacity we really need and actually need. one thing is however clear to me, that there is demand! Online magazines can work ... but there a several challenges they have to overcome... firstly what a magazine does online has to be true to its offline brand . Many brands lose their character online as they are not always able to translate their values and offering on the web. consumers also engage very differently with magazines , a magazine is a special relationship that is very one on one , many consumers cannot wait for print dates for their fav mags and this is often missed online by creating more regular interaction and thus changing the brand role in the consumers life ... It is even more beneficial when such a developer comes together to share this idea with other like minded developers and they give themselves an impossible task and try to get a solution for it. That's how new ideas and products come up. That's the part a developer community would play as far as turning a Novice IT worker into a proficient developer. Getting a developer community involved in a common goal/solution/software etc (it doesnt need to be 100 people or so but just a couple of people) this would be instrumental as far as skill building is concerned. I have this site am running on Mambo. It's running the most current version. At some point it just happened that I cant edit content, just like that. It opens but can't edit. Could this be a bug with the WYSWIG editor? Anyone with an idea? Evans

I don't know about Paypal and Kenyan Bank accounts coz I talked to some officials a couple of weeks ago specifically on this issue and they said nothing has changed as of now. The problems they have with kenyan Banks are because they have to follow "external regulations" that prevent them from sending money to Kenya. So it's Paypal that is deliberately doing it.
