How prepaid power works

Does anybody know how prepaid electricity by Kenya Power works? I envision they send the data via the same cable that caries power which in this case, its a big LAN. can someone enlighten me please -- -erastus Nairobi Kenya

Not sure how the KPLC implementation works but all the details of the standard used in South Africa is available online: http://www.nrs.eskom.co.za/nrs/specifications/nrs%20009-6-7%20%282.2%29.pdf The system uses cryptography to make it difficult to create fake vouchers. They also use a timestamp in the recharge code and the meter keeps track of the last timestamps used so that you can't use the same code twice. In South Africa at least, you can all the info you need to reverse engineer the firmware online but you would still need the encryption keys. If you could get your hands on the encryption key you probably would already have someone on the inside who could just send you codes or get you the code generating software. Besides, you would imagine that KPLC could monitor the power actually used and cross check that against codes purchased for your meter to detect fraud. Although it is probably easier just to splice out the meter than it is to generate fraudulent recharge codes. Safaricom 3G Billing System ... gone bonkers

I unintentionally send "balance" to 450 from a certain data line I am using on 3G (prepaid) and got this: <Quote 0> Name: Number: Safaricom Content: Data Bundle Balance: 17 MB expires on 2012-05-21 10:33:41. Time: 23/04/2012 14:23:15 </Quote> This got me alarmed, because I just bought 1.5GiB on the said line on Saturday, and never quite used it to this extent. So I called Customer Care to find out and the lady told me she is not able to access the system to get the usage details, so I should head to selfcare.safaricom.co.ke and register, then find the data. Not sure that is possible, but I don't like the process. A few minutes later, I again sent "balance" to 450 and got the following: <Quote 1> Name: Number: Safaricom Content: Data Bundle Balance: 29 MB expires on 2012-05-21 10:33:41. Time: 23/04/2012 15:06:40 </Quote> Now, suddenly, there is 12MB more to my data bundle! Such a big discrepancy I must say. However, this still doesn't explain to me where my 1.4-something GiB has disappeared to... I am waiting till their system is up for an explanation.
