Running a technology based business in Africa can be a tough call, as technology changes so rapidly that it could render your innovation or service redundant in a flash. There is the proverbial build, buy, integrate or adapt conundrum. Business models for technology companies, more so those offering services are not as straight forward as one would think. There are numerous permutations to think of as consumers are a tough lot to please or convert. The debate for free, paid or freemium shall not be concluded soon, in as much as there are stellar examples of each out there. While the above issues are pertinent to developing robust technology based businesses, I think the reason for not seeing big "indigenous tech based service " companies in Africa, is that we are yet to nail the philosophy and ethos of our businesses. What do our technology services companies exist to do? Google for example seeks to organize the world's information, Facebook seeks to connect the world and local poster child Ushahidi seeks to map out crisis information to aid in decision making. - http://bit.ly/gx0OC4

Database design question

Can someone one please poke holes in my theory below? *The Theory:* Suppose you want to create the database structure of, hmmm, lets say a new CMS, instead of creating the database structure in the normal way i.e. content, users, categories etc, you do it in a totally different way, like below: Table* Objects:* Columns: objID | name | (other house keeping columns here e.g. date created, created by etc) Table *ObjectPropertyTypes:* optID | propertyTypeName Table* ObjectProperties:* opID | objID | optID | propertyName Table *ObjectsData:* odID | objID | opID | value Therefore, suppose you wanted to store articles with the columns (articleId, title, description, date added, published) and containing the data (1, "Welcome to Skunkworks", "Entire body of article will come here", "2011-02-23 18:50", 1), the resulting database structure would be: Table *Objects:* objID | name 1 | "articles" Table *ObjectPropertyTypes:* optID | propertyTypeName 100 | "Number" 101 | "Text" 102 | "Date" Table *ObjectProperties:* opID | objID | optID | propertyName 200 | 1 | 100 | "articleId" 201 | 1 | 101 | "title" 202 | 1 | 101 | "description" 203 | 1 | 102 | "dateAdded" 204 | 1 | 101 | "published" Table *ObjectsData:* odID | objID | opID | value 301 | 1 | 200 | 1 302 | 1 | 201 | "Welcome to Skunkworks" 303 | 1 | 202 | "Entire body of article will come here" 304 | 1 | 203 | "2011-02-23 18:50" 305 | 1 | 204 | 1 So, what am I missing?

Hello. I need a simple barcode reader preferably one that can also do data matrix (2d codes) No fancy bells and whistles, just plain reader the data from which I can read via putty into a text file. Any pointers please?
