[On Behalf of Connie J Kendig, ISOC] Dear Colleagues, The Internet Society has announced that it is seeking applications for the next round of the ISOC Fellowship to the IETF program, part of its Next Generation Leaders (NGL) programme (www.isoc.org/leaders) The Fellowship program offers engineers from developing countries fellowships that fund the cost of attending an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) meeting. As you know, the IETF is the Internet's premier standards-making body, responsible for the development of protocols used in IP-based networks. IETF participants represent an international community of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers involved in the technical operation of the Internet and the continuing evolution of Internet architecture. Fellowships will be awarded through a competitive application process. The Internet Society is currently accepting fellowship applications for the next two IETF meetings: * IETF 78, 25-30 July, Maastricht, Netherlands * IETF 79, 7-12 November, Beijing, China http://www.isoc.org/educpillar/fellowship/index.php Fellowship applications for both IETF meetings are due by 16 April 2010. If Wimax messed you up on 3.5Ghz, there is a simple solution. A feedhorn filter from any company that operates between 3.7-4.2Ghz and say goodbye to the maneno from the increased TX levels from many wimax sites. Consider a Norsat one. Rgds.

Anyone buying old laptops?

Hi, A friend of mine has some old PII Dell latitude laptops that she wants to sell. The guys who buy used/old/damaged laptops say that they are only taking PIII and above... Does anyone know anyone who can buy old PII laptops. Surely, there must be something that can be salvaged from a PII laptop. Claire.

I'm just taking a poke at this, pls go ahaed and shred as necessary. :-). When compared to cloud computing, don't you think that the toilet/garbage bins follow the same system? Once you finish your thing in the loos etc, the flush is a keyboard while the water is the processor. Flushed away, it is not longer you issue to know where the sewage goes, how it is treated and what facilities contain the treatment plant. Similarly, why is e-waste such a big issue and why is it your problem? Apply the cloud and see that the cloud : Does it exist?.... Am I close to a ban on this list? :-)

We are not talking of collectors items. Due to depreciation, cars lose value. Even insurers will not cover such cars and charge seperately. In KENYA = Ksh 150,000/- or more! Junk has some value. In UK = Please take it away from me! It will cost me more to dispose of it In Japan = Scrap. No one wants its In some parts of Europe = Please take it away from me! It will cost me more to dispose of it If you have travelled and seen such, pls add your thots. :-) Rgds.

Used computers.....

There is an on-going discussion on the kictanet list about proposals to completely ban used computers. IMHO, I'm against the ban and the excuses about e-waste or otherwise do not justify a complete ban on used computers. The used computer market has to supplement the new machines market. As an example, about 3 years ago , I wanted a server to do some test deployment before going on a new system. I bought an old compaq server from Evans company, though have never met him. The compaq server helped me quite alot and ran well for about 2 years before it outlived its function so I gave it to a friend who used it to do his test deployment. All I'm saying, without the option to buy a cheaper server, my test project would not have seen any attempt as getting a new one was not a priority. In a lot of ways, the used computer market has helped many kenyans get IT skills, and there was a time when clones used to dominate the end user market as larger names were only interested in corporate markets. I personally feel that we should not forget the used computer market, how it has helped and made it possible for many. I'm sure it has helped plenty on this list too. I think we need to show some support to the used computer market by echoing our concerns about such a ban. I hope Evans can make a very strong case against the proposed ban. Is there anyone on this list who has benefited from used computers, share you thoughts. ( BTW, I'm not an importer of such equipment etc. Am just sharing my views on this list ). Me thots. Rgds.
